The Journey To The City Of David
12/08/2016

Daily Devotions: by Christina Farris

Luke 2:1-5 KJV
(1) And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed.
(2) (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)
(3) And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.
(4) And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)
(5) To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.

The journey to city of David the importance of it for Joseph, Mary and the world was more then just taxation but it was for the birth of his son. Had the scripture telling of where the child would be born even enter their mind before the decree of Caesar Augusta is unclear. Yet the everlasting ruler of Israel would come forth from Bethlehem and come from the tribe of David. The birth being more then ordinary birth but one of a virgin, espoused to a man.

The prophecy over the years seeming of can this be, to the reality of how God gets his king born there. This morning as I think on the Christmas message to come, I have felt much in the humbug spirit. It has no place in Christmas, except the remind us not to be a scrooge or a Grinch before the end of the story. God sends his child into a world of taxation and greed. Giving the most precious gift He could to mankind. A gift without thrills, but one that the world for centuries would worship and adore for decades to come.

God sent his Son into the world with a family to care for him, living in the land of Nazareth, but having to get to the City of David for delivery. A trip to the city not one made every year, but one made by godly design using the devil’s greed. If the devil had realized God’s plan he would of tried to have the baby born elsewhere. The timing of birth so perfectly design by God. No fully understanding the importance of that journey before the first Christmas morn. Yet the everlasting king must come from the tribe of Judah, from the city of David called Bethlehem.

If one can only realize how special the Savior Jesus birth was, we can then understand the preciousness of each baby born into this world. Yet his birth extra special as it was, would gain the attention of birth from God sending His angels forth to proclaim the birth, and sending nature of the twinkling star forth to announce it to the world. Do not proud parents send out birth announcement in some form or fashion. By the passing of cigars, or calling up friends and family. Why should God be any different in the announcing of His Son. Yet his announcement went first to his family and then to the strangers of the world. God desires us to keep on sharing the Gospel message of Jesus and his love. For He continues to share his love in the world. This would not be the only time God the Father would shout the news to the world, but he would proclaim who His Son was at His baptism, and at the cross.

Dear Heavenly Father help us this Christmas to let the light of Jesus shine in our hearts and around us, as we proclaim your Son’s birth to the world. In Jesus precious name, Amen.

Continual Scripture Study for Devotion:Micah 5:2 KJV
(2) But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.
