Daily Devotions: by Christina Farris

Matthew 1:19-25 KJV
(19) Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily.
(20) But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.
(21) And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.
(22) Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying,
(23) Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.
(24) Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife:
(25) And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.

Joseph thought on how to put his fiancée Mary away. He had a choice to make her a public example or to put her to death quietly. Judgment of what he should do pending in his heart and mind. Mary no doubt had little fear for this was a child of the Holy Ghost. I personally have to wonder what was going through Mary’s heart and mind as she waited on Joseph. She had the knowledge that this child was meant to be born. Was she walking in a daze of what was happening to her? These questions are not answerable. This part of Mary’s and Joseph story is not spoken of, but it nice to think of the situation based on Jewish laws. If we think of own plight in life based on Jewish customs and laws would we still be living today? I probably would not be. Then I think again of God’s preserving and one never knows what God will allow in his timetable frame of culture laws.

Joseph had a dream and an angel of the Lord spoke to him. The angel told him to fear not because the child Mary was carrying was of the Holy Ghost. I can not help but think what Joseph must of thought to hear the news. He lived in culture where Romans believed their gods had sex with women. Now if it was not for the prophecy in Isaiah and through out scripture no one would believe in the conception by the Holy Ghost. God did not have sex with Mary. He spoke the word and Jesus became a baby in the womb of Mary. Joseph would not have sex with Mary until after Jesus was born. He would keep her pure until the birth of this babe. His name would be called Emmanuel meaning God with us and He would be called Jesus.

Salvation of Mary came when Joseph woke from his dream and believed the angel that spoke to him about His wife to be. He did not hesitate but took her into his home as his wife. The promise of hope fulfilled in Mary heart knowing God had spoken to her husband to be. It was becoming a reality, not just by the thoughts of one individual.

Dear Heavenly Father give us the hope of faith in your word by the confirmation through others that believe your word. In Jesus precious name, Amen.

Continual Scripture Study for Devotion:Acts 10:19-20 KJV
(19) While Peter thought on the vision, the Spirit said unto him, Behold, three men seek thee.
(20) Arise therefore, and get thee down, and go with them, doubting nothing: for I have sent them.
