Daily Devotions: by Christina Farris

Psalms 114:1-8 KJV
(1) When Israel went out of Egypt, the house of Jacob from a people of strange language;
(2) Judah was his sanctuary, and Israel his dominion.
(3) The sea saw it, and fled: Jordan was driven back.
(4) The mountains skipped like rams, and the little hills like lambs.
(5) What ailed thee, O thou sea, that thou fleddest? thou Jordan, that thou wast driven back?
(6) Ye mountains, that ye skipped like rams; and ye little hills, like lambs?
(7) Tremble, thou earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob;
(8) Which turned the rock into a standing water, the flint into a fountain of waters.

As I began to study this Psalms this morning several things came to mind. How important tribe position was to Israel even after 400 years of exile in Egypt. Judah was still a ruling force as far as a tribe went to Israel even in the wilderness. Yet what was the history of the person name Judah that was the father of the tribe of Israel. Judah sold his brother Joseph into slavery instead of allowing him to be killed. His plan of rescue meant reward and Reuben who idea was to come back and free his brother never could occur. Joseph other brothers had thrown him into a pit because of jealousy, for Joseph was favored by their father. Now with this said, would Judah as lawgiver was a preserver of life. Israel would be a leader in the idea of freedom and life but the worship of one God. The idea of bad things happening to you had to do with sin and disobedience to God vs. doing the will of God through obedience and living godly causing blessings to flow. Faith would part of obedience.

The trip from Egypt to the Promise Land would be act of obedience to God, but the foundation of Israel law coming both from Judah and also the Levitical tribe. Now the ancestor of the Levitical tribe was Levi, he was a man that Jacob his father said was instrument of cruelty. Levitical tribe in the wilderness had no trouble killing those with the sword that did not worship God. When Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the laws written down from God he saw people worshipping Baal. Aaron his brother had even made a calf. Yet Aaron would be saved because of his allegiants to God. He was a priest who obeyed the people until Moses came down from the mountain with the law. The enforcement of worshipping God came. Sounds cruel if looking from the world, but looking from a believers heart, it was God who had wanted to destroy and Moses begged God not to only to find out why God wanted too and so he then inflicted judgment of God on the worshippers of Baal. The choice was given to worship God or die by the sword. Islam extremist in some parts of the world force this type of belief system on people. Very ancient culture way of handling people’s thinking and controlling them.

Freedom begins to form when we see the water poured out of a rock that should make a spark. Flint is a hard stone that makes fire, but water poured from it. Water that flowed would form a pool and fountain of water in which to drink from. There is a point when we see a God loving providing water out of impossible source, we see a God that loving. When we see a God saying follow me or else face the consequences, one can see a God of control and power. Men try to have this form of power. Kingdoms of power have risen up only to fall because the people did not like the control freak in charge.

God is using Moses to pour out both water/love on a people. Judah the lawgiver will be established through the judges. The Levitical tribe becoming greater the Judah, in the sense of God be in control verses the judge of man the tribe of Judah. Two powers rising up. Jacob had wrestle with God and God proved his authority over Jacob with a dislocated hip.

God can give either cool drink or the wrath of God displayed to his people. God towering over the flock of Israel. The strength of God demonstrated through a quaking mountain. Yet it more then this without the water flowing only judgment seen from God, but the miracle of water was a gift from God that could not be denied. Elements of the desert causing thirst, a natural effect, but water in a dry place with a rock of flint causing water to be, proved the love of God and the power of God.

One must think if God able to bring both judgment and compassion to his people, who authority would you rather have. A God of compassion or a chance man might make good judgment. Moses execute wrath, Moses himself could not make water without God. Judges ruled over Israel as a power not of religious rule necessarily. Yet both man laws were not always God’s judgment or love. Yet God allowed these two powers to exist.

Who is this God that one day will rule over his people only. A God that kicked and Adam and Eve from the garden. A God that leads his people by still water and allows his people to walk through the enemies camp defeating them. God moved in Apostle Paul life and it lead him straight to testify to Roman government. A government a that persecuted Christians, and also did nothing to stop the crucifixion of our Lord. Yet in time Rome would change and one leader would accept Christ that would change a course of history.

Man sometimes acts on the will of God in judgment, but always when man acts on compassion it is the love of God coming through. The origin of the tribes ancestors only speak how God has changed them to serve Him though they not always in obedience to His will.

If we walk by the Spirit we have nothing fear of man, though it can lead to human death. It will not lead to eternal death. God place powers in place to rule and govern over us. Our church leaders to teach and preach God’s word and ways. To know the difference from humanity and spirituality. There is a lot more I could or would say, but it time to close and to say God grace in sufficient if we follow Him.

Dear Heavenly Father may your spirit flow in the life of the believer as we wait on the day you rule and not man. In Jesus precious name, Amen.

Continual Scripture Study for Devotion:Romans 12:2-3 KJV
(2) And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
(3) For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.
