Desires Granted 08/31/2021
Daily Devotions: by Christina FarrisNumbers 11:1-35 KJV
1 And when the people complained, it displeased the LORD: and the LORD heard it; and his anger was kindled; and the fire of the LORD burnt among them, and consumed them that were in the uttermost parts of the camp.
2 And the people cried unto Moses; and when Moses prayed unto the LORD, the fire was quenched.
3 And he called the name of the place Taberah: because the fire of the LORD burnt among them.
4 And the mixt multitude that was among them fell a lusting: and the children of Israel also wept again, and said, Who shall give us flesh to eat?
5 We remember the fish, which we did eat in Egypt freely; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlick:
6 But now our soul is dried away: there is nothing at all, beside this manna, before our eyes.
7 And the manna was as coriander seed, and the colour thereof as the colour of bdellium.
8 And the people went about, and gathered it, and ground it in mills, or beat it in a mortar, and baked it in pans, and made cakes of it: and the taste of it was as the taste of fresh oil.
9 And when the dew fell upon the camp in the night, the manna fell upon it.
10 Then Moses heard the people weep throughout their families, every man in the door of his tent: and the anger of the LORD was kindled greatly; Moses also was displeased.
11 And Moses said unto the LORD, Wherefore hast thou afflicted thy servant? and wherefore have I not found favour in thy sight, that thou layest the burden of all this people upon me?
12 Have I conceived all this people? have I begotten them, that thou shouldest say unto me, Carry them in thy bosom, as a nursing father beareth the sucking child, unto the land which thou swarest unto their fathers?
13 Whence should I have flesh to give unto all this people? for they weep unto me, saying, Give us flesh, that we may eat.
14 I am not able to bear all this people alone, because it is too heavy for me.
15 And if thou deal thus with me, kill me, I pray thee, out of hand, if I have found favour in thy sight; and let me not see my wretchedness.
16 And the LORD said unto Moses, Gather unto me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom thou knowest to be the elders of the people, and officers over them; and bring them unto the tabernacle of the congregation, that they may stand there with thee.
17 And I will come down and talk with thee there: and I will take of the spirit which is upon thee, and will put it upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with thee, that thou bear it not thyself alone.
18 And say thou unto the people, Sanctify yourselves against to morrow, and ye shall eat flesh: for ye have wept in the ears of the LORD, saying, Who shall give us flesh to eat? for it was well with us in Egypt: therefore the LORD will give you flesh, and ye shall eat.
19 Ye shall not eat one day, nor two days, nor five days, neither ten days, nor twenty days;
20 But even a whole month, until it come out at your nostrils, and it be loathsome unto you: because that ye have despised the LORD which is among you, and have wept before him, saying, Why came we forth out of Egypt?
21 And Moses said, The people, among whom I am, are six hundred thousand footmen; and thou hast said, I will give them flesh, that they may eat a whole month.
22 Shall the flocks and the herds be slain for them, to suffice them? or shall all the fish of the sea be gathered together for them, to suffice them?
23 And the LORD said unto Moses, Is the LORD'S hand waxed short? thou shalt see now whether my word shall come to pass unto thee or not.
24 And Moses went out, and told the people the words of the LORD, and gathered the seventy men of the elders of the people, and set them round about the tabernacle.
25 And the LORD came down in a cloud, and spake unto him, and took of the spirit that was upon him, and gave it unto the seventy elders: and it came to pass, that, when the spirit rested upon them, they prophesied, and did not cease.
26 But there remained two of the men in the camp, the name of the one was Eldad, and the name of the other Medad: and the spirit rested upon them; and they were of them that were written, but went not out unto the tabernacle: and they prophesied in the camp.
27 And there ran a young man, and told Moses, and said, Eldad and Medad do prophesy in the camp.
28 And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of Moses, one of his young men, answered and said, My lord Moses, forbid them.
29 And Moses said unto him, Enviest thou for my sake? would God that all the LORD'S people were prophets, and that the LORD would put his spirit upon them!
30 And Moses gat him into the camp, he and the elders of Israel.
31 And there went forth a wind from the LORD, and brought quails from the sea, and let them fall by the camp, as it were a day's journey on this side, and as it were a day's journey on the other side, round about the camp, and as it were two cubits high upon the face of the earth.
32 And the people stood up all that day, and all that night, and all the next day, and they gathered the quails: he that gathered least gathered ten homers: and they spread them all abroad for themselves round about the camp.
33 And while the flesh was yet between their teeth, ere it was chewed, the wrath of the LORD was kindled against the people, and the LORD smote the people with a very great plague.
34 And he called the name of that place Kibrothhattaavah: because there they buried the people that lusted.
35 And the people journeyed from Kibrothhattaavah unto Hazeroth; and abode at Hazeroth.
How many of us look at the things of this world and say what have I been able to accomplish, gain and so forth. How many are thankful just plumbing, and basic necessities. Those on the street, thank God for answers of prayer in their own storms of life, when others have it in abundance. When I look at my Christian faith, and the heritage from which it sprung it not about a people but the faith in God and a lack there of, that is a reminder of how easy it is to not to trust God for just for daily for meat and bread. I make freezer meals in my Kitchen in bulk for two people and I plan for daily supply or portion of food. I think of how blessed I am in the ability to have it. Then I think of God's words to Israel about when they enter the promise land they are able to eat whatever they want.
The wilderness journey is about learn that reliance on the Lord before the Promise Land. Charlie from Charlie and Chocolate Factory, never had enough to eat, but when he gained a golden ticket, he see a world of plenty where everything was sweet and Chocolate. Yes ladies we need our chocolate but men like it just as much as we do. There is point this morning the lust of our eyes is often what we ask God for in faith, never understanding the need for faith for those things we can not see or even perceive.
Moses had been leading the people in the wilderness, as if tending for ewe lambs, feeding and nursing them at his breast so to speak. He was weary himself and not against taking the matter to God, for he was only one man leading thousands in the wilderness. He was tired and worn out from the daily listening the complaints of the people. Yet he finally could hold his peace when they came begging for meat to eat saying we remember having fish to eat in the land of Egypt. People angry because of what they had to leave behind and how they had to do without because of the journey was harsh, cruel and at times unrelenting. If we only look from God's side we see a grumbling people that don't ask God or Moses but instead complaining and grumble about the situation. We all have something in our life we long for, desire, want or even look forward too.
Now in the people defense it often takes a crowd of people with the same complaint for leaders and government official to hear about issue in order to make positive change. One thing Social media has allowed for many American voices to be heard not just one voice and not always American voice. Moses is dealing with a group of people that left luxury for proverty, the absents of daily provision obtained by one's own hand in the since of making money and buying of the rations that money will buy. It is like going camping and saying if you can pick or dig it, catch it, trap it, or shoot it for dinner then you will eat. Yet what is in the desert to eat for the number of people that were with Moses. Moses plight is I can not catch, dig, hunt, enough food for these people and then I have to hear them grumble. God says Moses call the seventy elders, call them to Tabernacle, I will provide the meat to last for the people who lust for the desire of meat. Where are you going to get that meat Lord I do not see all that meat running in the desert. Lord saying Moses just do as I say, you know my word is good.
Moses calls the elders and a few do not attend the meeting the reason unclear, but when God pours out his Spirit on the elders even the one's not in attendance at the Tabernacle began to prophesy too. The elders in taberenacle went out to see the elders outside Tabernacle. Now we talk about a meeting at church, and the Spirit coming upon our people, but I yet heard the story where the Spirit seem to fall on his people even on them that were outside the church building. I am not saying it hasn't happened, I just have never seen it. This promise of help to Moses was to the elders and not a pouring of God's Spirit on the whole camp. Today the whole church the Spirit of God still falls upon at the people at different times, yet what is more interesting then the Spirit is it remains on God's people outside the church to beckon the people in to the church and also into the family of God. The church of God has no walls. The Tabernacle had walls that could not stop the Spirit of God from anointing all the elders.
The meat comes in the form of Quail and some people died because of their lust/greed. Lust is used in to formats in his passage one of desire and one of greed. God punishes the greed and not the desire. Why because wanting something is not wrong, yet if we ask God for it and he says no, then there is no more sin concerning desire, but if he grants the desire and we abuse it, misuse it, are greedy, lustful, abusive in someway our desire then becomes not only sinful but is manifestation of our hearts, then God will in time either take it away or allow it to destroy us or take us out himself. Those that took only what they needed for daily food, had learn to trust, and obey God. Learn not to allow there desires and need to cause greed but thankfulness for the provision granted daily.
This is an Old Testament Story but teaches many principals Christ taught his people about trusting in Him. Jesus was born into a Jewish family and he went to their temples and was a offspring of King David the son of Jesse. What is taught is faith in God, Jesus even told us about His Heavenly Father and even claim to be Him. The law of faith still applied, it did not change. The need to ask God for anything needs to still be applied.
Are we grumbling to the government, to our families and to the world without ever seeking and asking God? The world is not your nurse maid and the world maybe your oyster but what it is not, able to provide your desire daily, but God can and will, but how when we are in the wilderness only God truly knows. If God can pour water from a rock, and pour out manna from heaven, and if God can rains down quail from heaven in the life of Israel, do you not think he can not do it for his people today. Well God can do more then we ask for, because he see the heart. The Holy Spirit today takes our needs to the Father for us, and when provision comes without us asking, it is because he knew our need. God knows his own sheep and tends to them daily, weekly, hourly and even when they are resting. Christ provides, but we have to learn to trust, ask, obey and hear his word. In Heaven we can celebrate but in the wilderness of life we are on the journey to the Promise land. Let us hold to the truth of the Gospel of Jesus.
Dear Heavenly Father, help us in our journey in the wilderness, knowing if we ask, you will provide, help us not to be greedy but to share your love with others and your hope. In Jesus precious name, Amen.
Continual Scripture Study: Romans 8:22-28 KJV
22 For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.
23 And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.
24 For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for?
25 But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it.
26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
