Paul, Fathering Timothy
08/24/2021

Daily Devotions:
by Christina Farris

1 Timothy 5:1-25 KJV
1 Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father; and the younger men as brethren;
2 The elder women as mothers; the younger as sisters, with all purity.
3 Honour widows that are widows indeed.
4 But if any widow have children or nephews, let them learn first to shew piety at home, and to requite their parents: for that is good and acceptable before God.
5 Now she that is a widow indeed, and desolate, trusteth in God, and continueth in supplications and prayers night and day.
6 But she that liveth in pleasure is dead while she liveth.
7 And these things give in charge, that they may be blameless.
8 But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.
9 Let not a widow be taken into the number under threescore years old, having been the wife of one man,
10 Well reported of for good works; if she have brought up children, if she have lodged strangers, if she have washed the saints' feet, if she have relieved the afflicted, if she have diligently followed every good work.
11 But the younger widows refuse: for when they have begun to wax wanton against Christ, they will marry;
12 Having damnation, because they have cast off their first faith.
13 And withal they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house; and not only idle, but tattlers also and busybodies, speaking things which they ought not.
14 I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully.
15 For some are already turned aside after Satan.
16 If any man or woman that believeth have widows, let them relieve them, and let not the church be charged; that it may relieve them that are widows indeed.
17 Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine.
18 For the scripture saith, Thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn. And, The labourer is worthy of his reward.
19 Against an elder receive not an accusation, but before two or three witnesses.
20 Them that sin rebuke before all, that others also may fear.
21 I charge thee before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, and the elect angels, that thou observe these things without preferring one before another, doing nothing by partiality.
22 Lay hands suddenly on no man, neither be partaker of other men's sins: keep thyself pure.
23 Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thine often infirmities.
24 Some men's sins are open beforehand, going before to judgment; and some men they follow after.
25 Likewise also the good works of some are manifest beforehand; and they that are otherwise cannot be hid.

Timothy was young, he was still learning about life and about people, we might want to consider these instruction to Timothy more of how to live in the world we are in as a teacher and communicator of the Gospel of Jesus Christ in promotion of morality, issues of common sin in the community and in the church world, as well how to directly teach against sin, instruct and encourage the church. Should woman remain silent in the church, perhaps for some that means that woman really have no say about what occuring in environment of the church. If that right is removed with the changing of times then you remove a precious right of sharing faith, and liberty in Christ. Paul encourage Timothy to encourage woman to marry when they young. Encourage even nephews to learn at home, including children of the aunt and even children in general to learn the ways of Christ within the home.

When scripture sounds like keep your woman barefooted and pregnant you have to look deeper at the culture of the area and what you might see is a very man's world and not a world where woman had a lot of say in culture. What you might see is the instruction to Timothy was also dealing with older religious world of Jews perhaps, which Paul would of come from, that did not favor outspokeness of women. Not saying it never happened but it not comfort zone of space and time. The point being the women were stirring up trouble in reality by visiting each other, gossiping about what was going on both in the pew as well as in the homes of one another. The gossip was causing division. Way to shut of gossip is not allow anyone to speak, to see where it coming from. The source of the problem. You can not solve a problem unless you can nip it in the bud.

Paul coming from a jewish background would of followed older traditions of conduct perhaps, but he had no problem with women in ministry, just gossipy women, men and children. Paul is telling Timothy how to handle some issues occuring. but social customs will effect some of these things he telling Timothy to a point. The business world today would just fire the person that was gossiping. They church would love and try and correct the sin. Business world might confront it or use it to their advantage too, but sooner or later that person is fired. In the church world they will correct the issue, shun you or even teach against it publicly as well as talking to in private. Yet what happens, is church world is often more tender on issues because they to have dealt with sin, and problems in their life and had to lay those burdens at the cross of Jesus.

When we examine our hearts are we causing trouble by our actions? Are we causing trouble by what we do. Are we causing problems because of our faith. Are we causing discord within the church and the church world? If you can not be part of the solution in a church you need not to be the problem. Remove yourself from the issue or help resolve issues. There is a difference in praying for people and being a gossiper. The best thing to do only give a name or condition of a person for healing. Bigger issues like looking for a home, or car can be said that simply with no other imput. If you know the person personally you might want more information but general public in the church needs no more then this. Though doesn't address this issue, I am because it allows for gossip. Gossip does not help those in need of prayer or those that might come as a visitor. People can take it wrong if outside the church world. Inside the church world understand it. Be careful how you share.

Everything inside the church needs to be handled with prayer, and dealing with it directly one on one and then in a group if it continues. People should not feeling like they are alone facing those in opposition. Show the same compassion that you want to be shown in these situations. Paul was talking because Timothy was still becoming that man God had called him to be and need knowledge he did not possess as a preacher and leader in his church. Elders and spiritual leaders often have good advice from experience and that what young people need to understand. Sometimes the wisdom of older ones can help the younger ones coming up in service to God by their experiences, and not just lording over them to do everything one way.

Dear Heavenly Father, the elders of faith can give godly wisdom that can enable younger to know how to minister in faith, in hope and charity. How to solve issue with the walls of the church and outside the church. Lord encourage your elders with knowledge to instruct your people to serve, to solve and to relate to those problems within the church. In Jesus precious name, Amen.

Continual Scripture Study: Galatians 6:1-6 KJV
1 Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.
2 Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.
3 For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself.
4 But let every man prove his own work, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another.
5 For every man shall bear his own burden.
6 Let him that is taught in the word communicate unto him that teacheth in all good things.
