Edification By The Spirit 08/18/2021
Daily Devotions: by Christina Farris1 Corinthians 14:1-40 KJV
1 Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.
2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.
3 But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.
4 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.
5 I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.
6 Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?
7 And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped?
8 For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?
9 So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air.
10 There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification.
11 Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be unto him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh shall be a barbarian unto me.
12 Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church.
13 Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret.
14 For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.
15 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.
16 Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest?
17 For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified.
18 I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all:
19 Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.
20 Brethren, be not children in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men.
21 In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord.
22 Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.
23 If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?
24 But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believeth not, or one unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all:
25 And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth.
26 How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.
27 If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret.
28 But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.
29 Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge.
30 If any thing be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace.
31 For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted.
32 And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.
33 For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.
34 Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law.
35 And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.
36 What? came the word of God out from you? or came it unto you only?
37 If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord.
38 But if any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant.
39 Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.
40 Let all things be done decently and in order.
The other day I was mad about something, can't remember what but I was mumbling, and my husband who usually can not hear me asked me, "what did you say and was that to me"? Oh the err, of the mumbles in life. I heard my husband do it too. Speaking to oneself is suppose to be a sign of being a bit crazy and I guess maybe I am, but how many would admit from time to time they mumble something to themselves not for the ears of others in the room. Can you make a fast recovery of the words that fell out, perhaps or did you hurt someone's feelings. This is life, the mouth not bridle or controlled. Yet it is a communication lapse that affects many of us. Speaking in tongues is not speaking in mumbles to oneself, but speaking a language known only to God spoken by the Spirit and language spoken by men to communicate the wonderful works of God or the foretelling of God's word in the church by aid of a foreign language known to someone else in the church that speaks the interpretation, there is no point in speaking so no one understands, unless interpretator is present to communicate what is said. There are people that speak in tongues in private prayer language and is interpreted by God's Spirit to God and the person speaking. Yet this language is not meant for church, for God's understands that deep prayer language of the human heart, when one is unable to communicate in words in their mind or verbally about their heart. If it is a private prayer it is a mumble to another perhaps, or something beautiful or enlightening if understood when interpretation is known.
The edification or building up of the church must take place in a language all understand or can understand so they can learn about God and Christ Jesus. I can tell you how to make spaghetti because I make homemade spaghetti. I can tell you so you understand the basic of how to make spaghetti even if you know not how to make spaghetti but know what it is. I can teach you nothing if you have no clue what a frying pan is to fry ground beef in or even ground sausage. Sausage only use in Lasagna with ground beef, giving it a slightly Italian taste in my opinion. However I might have authenic Italian Spaghetti or Lasagna all wrong in making meat sauce. Americans do add their own flair to ancient recipe and Italian tasting recipes. What is my point? I can tell you about God and about Jesus, but unless I speak your language will you understand it. I can talk tv and radio and you might understand it. I can speak in the language of majority of Americans that speak english and you should understand some or most of it as far as a story about God, Jesus or the Holy Spirit. Yet if I speak metaphorically it might go over someone head. Why because they still learning how to read? No how to listen and interpretate scripture or the meaning of metaphoric.
If I speak in a language that makes a whimsical story about a fox or old crow you might say I speaking about Aesop fables. If I tell a parable of Jesus you might understand the basics of love, but there maybe a deeper meaning to the story because of social customs or the language I speak about concerning our world today and God working and moving in world today.
Paul spoke to the Corinthians church about edifying the church in tongues and interpretation. However he also spoke how the confusion can come into the church if one speaks like a Barbarian. A few weeks ago a church had a really nice sermon, but a women made comment about the minister that a stranger would not of understood. Everyone else would of understood it that attended the church. So I butted in and helped a friends out on the subject and made the lady mad with a comment of what going on at the church, I do not know your pastor but he sound right on topic for today's message.
Life needs no more confusion by someone else interpretation of events unless they shed light on facts. Facts are essential to understanding of God's word. Yet the church lady was speaking something I was not privilege too. Can you speak so all understand, if not hold your peace. If you can speak so all can understand, ask is it of God's Spirit and will for you to do so. Think again if you speak, are you speaking in love, hope and most all faith in obedience to God by His Spirit. Can you teach patience if you have no patience. Think for moment the last time you waiting in a checkout line and the person is slower then molasses in January. What molasses someone might say, but those that like Molasses syrup and raised in area that collects maple syrup from trees know exactly what that means. Otherwise you are just guessing that it takes a long time. Yet you still probably understood that. To teach patience one might use a phrase to express how waiting in line takes a fair amount of patience when in a hurry. Yet it is nice when Cashiers call another to open their register to take a few people because the person in line is slowing up checkout or there is to just to many people already in line.
The point being there are things understood without experience and there thing understood with experience. Speaking in tongues in a congregation should of more then one interpretator so there is no confusion of a known language. Two there needs to be only one interpretator for one praying to their Lord, if it not meant for anyone else to hear, but if your mumbling just like Hannah mumbled the minister or another person is going to want to know what all the fuse, tears or anger is about. Hannah, in I Samuel 1, got a lesson about pouring out her spirit and words to God, but at the same time God used the experince to speak to her through the Priest Eli, who told her to go home and God would grant her request. Priest Eli had thought she was drunk, but she was not. Once he discovered the true nature of her pouring out her grief to God he honor her with that blessing.
Where are you, are you listening to God, are you allowing him to give the interpretation to your heart in church. If you ever heard the Spirit speak, you probably also heard the interpretation if not did you ask for interpretation. Yes there are times God speaks to his people and his people understand but others do not. I have experience it only a few times in that way. Does it aid the believer, it is an encouragement and fire builder in a church to those that believe or have not understood about the Spirit speaking through someone in another language that needs interpretator to understand by all people not just the speaker.
I hope this little writing only help with any confusion about tongues one may have. What spoken should be understood and be able to apply to one's life. This is probably more education about the matter in laymen/simple terms.
Dear Heavenly Father help people to know that your reality is you hear the human heart in private that no words can necessarily describe and that you also speak through people in different languages with either interpretor being the Holy Spirit to the heart or a human interpretator who speak the interpretation either by the Holy Spirit or known language. In Jesus precious name, Amen.

26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
1 Samuel 1:1-18 KJV
1 Now there was a certain man of Ramathaimzophim, of mount Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephrathite:
2 And he had two wives; the name of the one was Hannah, and the name of the other Peninnah: and Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children.
3 And this man went up out of his city yearly to worship and to sacrifice unto the LORD of hosts in Shiloh. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, the priests of the LORD, were there.
4 And when the time was that Elkanah offered, he gave to Peninnah his wife, and to all her sons and her daughters, portions:
5 But unto Hannah he gave a worthy portion; for he loved Hannah: but the LORD had shut up her womb.
6 And her adversary also provoked her sore, for to make her fret, because the LORD had shut up her womb.
7 And as he did so year by year, when she went up to the house of the LORD, so she provoked her; therefore she wept, and did not eat.
8 Then said Elkanah her husband to her, Hannah, why weepest thou? and why eatest thou not? and why is thy heart grieved? am not I better to thee than ten sons?
9 So Hannah rose up after they had eaten in Shiloh, and after they had drunk. Now Eli the priest sat upon a seat by a post of the temple of the LORD.
10 And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed unto the LORD, and wept sore.
11 And she vowed a vow, and said, O LORD of hosts, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thine handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thine handmaid, but wilt give unto thine handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto the LORD all the days of his life, and there shall no razor come upon his head.
12 And it came to pass, as she continued praying before the LORD, that Eli marked her mouth.
13 Now Hannah, she spake in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard: therefore Eli thought she had been drunken.
14 And Eli said unto her, How long wilt thou be drunken? put away thy wine from thee.
15 And Hannah answered and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but have poured out my soul before the LORD.
16 Count not thine handmaid for a daughter of Belial: for out of the abundance of my complaint and grief have I spoken hitherto.
17 Then Eli answered and said, Go in peace: and the God of Israel grant thee thy petition that thou hast asked of him.
18 And she said, Let thine handmaid find grace in thy sight. So the woman went her way, and did eat, and her countenance was no more sad.
