Jesus Claim 08/14/2021
Daily Devotions: by Christina FarrisJohn 14:1-15 KJV
1 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.
2 In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.
4 And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.
5 Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way?
6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
7 If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.
8 Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us.
9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?
10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.
11 Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake.
12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.
13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
14 If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.
15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.
Inward being of man, our spirit is often the hardest thing to evaluate in scripture because of man's inequality with God, for Christ claims his equality with God before the cross. He says "believe in God and believe also in me". If we focus on Jesus title of lordship, and his claim also to be one with the Father and the Father, we have to ask, how can this be if he is man. Jesus name in Isaiah was Immanuel, as well as the name given to Joseph in Matthew 1:23 of the son Mary was carrying Emmanuel(meaning God with us). Different culture talk about God appearing in different forms. Jewish and Christian culture no exception, for God comes as his Son as a baby and grow into a man. Taking on the fleshly nature of man and even feeling the pain and so forth man feels.
In the Proverbs we read the man's spirit is a candle of the Lord. The true light, lighteth every man. And we know this because God breath life into the nostrils of Adam who became a living soul. We must be born again not by natural birth but by Spirit. God lights us to breath air, he also must light us to receive spiritual truth and birth.
What is the difference between Christ and man, he was already spiritual born before becoming a man. Thomas ask Jesus where he was going, because Jesus said to follow him. How can we follow said Thomas if we do not know the way. It is clear Thomas still has issues of who Jesus is fully. Yet Jesus instructs to follow. The disciples followed Jesus to his cross and seen Jesus hung on the cross, and knew his resurrection. That Jesus had the power to give eternal life to all that believed. Philip also asked Jesus to show him the Father, and Jesus claims he has seen him, that he was him. Two disciples with unbelief and yet Jesus still instructs that if you love him to keep his commandments.
Jesus is clear he goes to the Father, but he is the Father. What is this double talk about, he talking about his position on earth as Son, and not Father. Some might assume Jesus is talking as Father of his people and not being God, but Jesus is clear he is one with God. If this knowledge who do you say Jesus is and what does Jesus finally say to his disciples but to obey his commandments.
The reality at this point for the disciples was of unbelief perhaps, for others they understood he was Emmanuel, God with us. Others reading perhaps still searching that truth out for themselves. Yet the cross would settle who Jesus was as Son of God and equal to the Father through his resurection, declaring he was Lord of all.
Dear Heavenly Father as we standing in your presence of knowing your Son is Lord and Father to us, and not just to us but the entire world. That you do not change your love for mankind, demonstrating your love through your ability of who you are as the one that lights our life and gives us spiritual birth when we open our hearts to you. Help us by your Spirit to keep your commandments, In Jesus precious name, Amen.
