Daily Devotions: by Christina Farris

Genesis 29:1-12 KJV
(1) Then Jacob went on his journey, and came into the land of the people of the east.
(2) And he looked, and behold a well in the field, and, lo, there were three flocks of sheep lying by it; for out of that well they watered the flocks: and a great stone was upon the well's mouth.
(3) And thither were all the flocks gathered: and they rolled the stone from the well's mouth, and watered the sheep, and put the stone again upon the well's mouth in his place.
(4) And Jacob said unto them, My brethren, whence be ye? And they said, Of Haran are we.
(5) And he said unto them, Know ye Laban the son of Nahor? And they said, We know him.
(6) And he said unto them, Is he well? And they said, He is well: and, behold, Rachel his daughter cometh with the sheep.
(7) And he said, Lo, it is yet high day, neither is it time that the cattle should be gathered together: water ye the sheep, and go and feed them.
(8) And they said, We cannot, until all the flocks be gathered together, and till they roll the stone from the well's mouth; then we water the sheep.
(9) And while he yet spake with them, Rachel came with her father's sheep: for she kept them.
(10) And it came to pass, when Jacob saw Rachel the daughter of Laban his mother's brother, and the sheep of Laban his mother's brother, that Jacob went near, and rolled the stone from the well's mouth, and watered the flock of Laban his mother's brother.
(11) And Jacob kissed Rachel, and lifted up his voice, and wept.
(12) And Jacob told Rachel that he was her father's brother, and that he was Rebekah's son: and she ran and told her father.

Waiting for the last one to come to roll away the huge stone for the last flock to be watered. There are churches across America with more then one church service, some traditional and some more modern in style. Older generation liking their hymns and organ music, while the next generation enjoy more popular Christian contemporary music and worship style. Yet when the congregation is called to worship all is feed. No matter what the doors are open on Sunday until the last sheep leave the church.

Peter was told in John last chapter to feed the sheep. In this story of Jacob we see herds men waiting for the pretty young girl that watched her father’s sheep coming to get water. Others already gotten water but waiting for the last herd to arrive. God’s heritage is waiting for the last of God’s people to arrive, for the stone of time to be roll away and the appearance of the Savior in the sky. The tombs be open and dead all rise to the sound of the trumpet. All ready to meet Jesus in the air that are saved.

The water hole was a time of gathering and exchanging news of family and checking on one another. Rachel no doubt could of moved the stone. After all the shepherds job even entailed fighting bears and lions that tried to kill the sheep. It is only a reminder that this shepherdess was not weak, but probably a strong able woman. Yet even Jacob rolled the stone away from the well so her sheep could drink before telling her who he was. There was enough water for all but to protect the water the stone had to be rolled in place and removed for the sheep to have a drink. The stone would of keep other predators from making it there water hole. A place that would not be necessarily safe for the sheep to come drink , if these other animals were allowed in. The stone also kept out the sand the wind blew across the desert drying up a waterhole.

There is a time when stones must be rolled for fresh water and time when that stone must cover the hole to the water. There times when church doors need shutting and times when church doors need to swing wide open to water God’s people. The water is there for the taking, but there time outside the watering hole. If one had plenty of water one is ready to eat from the field, until the time of the next watering. As people go forth in their daily lives to come and go from the religious world to the world beyond the church doors, God continues to feed the flock by His Spirit. The reading of word is only a daily stopping point. God is able to speak to the human heart beyond the well of His word. Yet it is important that each person gets their water, before going out in the world, to feed on the food from the Spirit alone.

How important it is to feed the sheep. Not only sheep that are adults, but the lambs as well. Each minister duty is to know the scripture that when God’s Spirit calls one to teach or preach, the word flows forth. God’s people know His word unless they are still babies just learning the word, but they will know by the Spirit if something is not right. God’s watering hole is not the only place his sheep great refreshed. Yet the stone rolled away for every believer was enough with the appearance of Christ for the word of Christ resurrection to spread like wild fire. The believer needs the reminder of the cross and the tomb, a reminder of hope of eternal life through Christ Jesus. If you think about it, the woman going to the tomb of Christ could not move the stone, but God moved it for them with earthquake and angels descending from above. Watching images of the flooding of New Orleans and seeing caskets float down the flood water, only reminds me that when Jesus comes back the caskets with saved people in them will have no trouble rising from the grave. Keys will not be needed to unlock the caskets for they will be undone the same way our Lord’s grave door was locked. Don’t worry about getting out of the box, worry about whether you have receive Jesus Christ as Lord.

You need a daily watering hole of God’s word. That watering hole is scripture. It not necessarily my site, or many devotional sites online, or books that one can buy in a store. It God’s word what you need daily. It is the most precious watering hole we have as believers in Christ. It is the foundation of learning about our faith, but it is not the only book about God’s grace. Many people have told there story to share the work of God in their life. Yet we all need that one base that comes first through prayer and talking to God directly and then reading of His Holy Scripture.

Dear Heavenly Father water us with your word. In Jesus precious name, Amen.

Continual Scripture Study for Devotion:

John 4:10 KJV
(10) Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.
