Called To Be A Stone
08/19/2016

Daily Devotions: by Christina Farris

1 Peter 2:1-10 KJV
(1) Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings,
(2) As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:
(3) If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
(4) To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious,
(5) Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.
(6) Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.
(7) Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,
(8) And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.
(9) But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:
(10) Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.

God calls us to be a stone in His temple. One of many blocks it takes to build a temple. Though there only be one chief cornerstone, there is also many blocks that lay upon the Chief Cornerstone. A cornerstone is the beginning block of any building made of concrete and mortar. It is the block that is the beginning that will not change its position. Without the block nothing is solid that is built. God‘s building does not decay. The walls of Jericho might of fallen but even the cornerstone remained for archaeologist to find. .Yet the walls are not solid. It walls are of concrete and mortar are things that will pass away. Yet those that believed and escaped the fall of Jericho did not stand on foundation of Jericho, but on the foundation of God and His Word. When the temple veil was ripped God went to live among the hearts of the people on the day of Pentecost. The Holy Spirit coming to dwell in the lives of his people. We are like apartment or house for God for those that believe. He comes in and dines with us if we invite Him into our lives. There is times that it seems the believer puts God in the closet of their heart, or in the basement/attic. He still there but our Spirit refuses to hear God’s word. God’s word can be a stumbling stone to the believer and is definitely a stumbling stone for the none believer until he receives Jesus Christ as Lord.

As believers we have a need to desire the word of God, and to love the word of God. Sometimes our desire is not to hear God’s word. To build on the foundation of faith through Christ Jesus we must be willing to believe and obey the word of God. To believe Christ came, died for us, and believe Jesus arose again the third day, forgiving us of all sins to each generation that would receive Him. God takes each person that believes and repents and begins to fashion them into a lively stone. A stone not dead but alive in Christ. Alive according to the word of God. The church God is building does not die. It goes to be with God in heaven upon their death unless Christ returns and they join Him in the New Jerusalem. Either our hope is assured. We are not dead we alive in Christ, learning to walk in the ways of the milk of the word of God daily. Building on the foundation of Christ and what He taught us.

God has called us to be a holy priesthood. A priesthood built on the word. Word being faith In Christ Jesus. Rehab believed the men of Jericho and tied a cord to the door to protect all within the chambers of her apartment. As the walls fell the spies found the room with the red cord and no harm came to Rehab and her people. She believed the stories that were coming into her village about the God of Israel. Do we believe the stories of Jesus coming into our hearts and minds. Safety can only come with belief, but our actions prove that we are God’s child. Yet there are times in our life where we might rebel for time against God like Jonah, David, Jacob and so forth. All the men and women of faith who yield to God knew the hope through believing God, and yet they were human living imperfect lives at times. No one worthy to receive forgiveness but the truth it is God’s mercy and grace when we receive Christ that allows us to have a lawyer when we fail to believe. Sometimes we have to trip and fall and learn life lessons that hard way, but the simple truth is the big step of not believing in Jesus will cost you eternity.

Dear Heavenly Father as you mold each believer into the stones you need for your temple, may you find people desiring he milk of the word and falling into submission to you will. In Jesus precious name, Amen.
