Time Of Christ: The Stoning or Written Judgment

Daily Devotions: by Christina Farris

John 8:4-12 KJV
(4) They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act.
(5) Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou?
(6) This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not.
(7) So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.
(8) And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground.
(9) And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.
(10) When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee?
(11) She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.
(12) Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

One of the hardest things to grasp is the value of the law of Moses and yet it is solely the law of Moses on some issues correct or was it God’s law. The truth of the law of Moses, it defined what would be done to someone caught in the cat of adultery. The judgment of Moses was not always the judgment of God. Judgment call of society is different then the judgment of God. As President Obama released more criminals one has to wonder is this so smart an act. Does this cause more crime. He who is without sin cast the first stone. Yet our laws of our land is to protect family, and the community of those living within the borders of each community with laws. These laws governed the worship and the legal aspect of the laws Israel lived in. A God center society had become like a God in judgment with its own laws. Yet every society is like this to some degree. Worshipping God is individual choice but the ten commandments were given as a community law by God. It is the difference between worshipping who who one pleases in godless society and worshipping God in society. God giving a law to worship him, in a world that the devil is allowed to run across. In heaven the perfect society of worshipping God alone. Earth a society made up of people that worshipped God and other creatures and things. God establishing His law on earth, for man to one day abide by for eternity with Him in heaven. Training wheels in this world for the next world.

Our concept of how laws should be governed and punished is sometimes different then how God would handle it. That is why Jesus came. Our laws of judgment perhaps is harsher then it needs to be at times and not tough enough at other times. Judgment of adultery was capital crime according to the law of Moses. A crime against family and a neighbor. The woman be stoned to death for punishment because of her supposed seduction. Of course they had laws for rape and the woman could cry rape and not be stoned unless proven otherwise. The judgment by man’s hand came from man. The laws were good, but the judgment of man became evil. The breaking of some laws only hurt those involved and other’s went totally against God, yet man played God by stoning.

A lawless society is dangerous, but judgment of God came upon man with plagues and biting serpents that brought death. Man enacted his own judgment for each situation by casting the devils out of society with stoning. Yet most people are devils at sometime or another in life. No one is without sin. Jesus whole point is who was not worthy of stoning and the men walked off that wanted to kill the woman caught in adultery. No one knows what Jesus wrote on the ground but it must have been some type of judgment upon those who would stone the woman. After all the men turned when ask who was without sin cast the first stone and they began to leave. They all left by the time he finished writing on the ground. The woman stood before Jesus and He says he condemns her not. If God’s law condemned her, how can Jesus not condemn the woman. The judgment of God was eternal, the earth judgment of society broke one of the ten commandments itself do not kill. Stoning caused death and the woman would not face death by stoning for her crime. Roman law was different then Israel law. No longer under Israel law. Capital punishment was handled by Roman government. Jesus obeyed religious law when it came to spirituality and legal law by whose law he was under and He lived in. This demonstrated how we live by social laws and religious laws together and not opposing religious laws on non religious people as well.

Would Jesus kill the woman caught in adultery as being the Son of God and equal to the Father. Only if she continued in sin, for Jesus tells her I do not condemn you but go and sin no more. Condemnation would come to this woman eventually if she continue her course in life of adultery. Something to think about when you make a mistake, not to beat yourself up but just do not do it again once the mistake is known to you.

Dear Heavenly Father grant us the grace to forgive sin, but to live by the rules of society and hopefully change them for your glory and honor. In Jesus precious name, Amen.

Continual Scripture Study for Devotion:

Titus 3:1-7 KJV
(1) Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work,
(2) To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, shewing all meekness unto all men.
(3) For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another.
(4) But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared,
(5) Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
(6) Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;
(7) That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
