Daily Devotions: by Christina FarrisMatthew 5:1-17 KJV
(1) And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him:
(2) And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,
(3) Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
(4) Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
(5) Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
(6) Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
(7) Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
(8) Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
(9) Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
(10) Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
(11) Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.
(12) Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.
(13) Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.
(14) Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
(15) Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
(16) Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
(17) Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
The word Beatitude is actually a Latin word and used in the Latin Vulgate (Jerome’s Latin Bible 309-405 AD version) and is derived from the word beatitudo and denotes blessedness and also declaration of being blessed. (source of information of International Standard Encyclopedia). I do other sources but usually it only to recheck information I already know or perceive or have not heard taught that way but by the Holy Spirit. I use other sources for checking out my thought patterns on any given morning. Yet it only might be glance if time does not allow deeper research. The point is God blesses with tools of confirmation. Jesus confirms much of what is said in both in New Testament beyond the Gospels and before. Many things Christ declares is not a new teaching but a confirmation and resounding sound of yes God declared it once before through man and He will again. In Psalms it declares that there is sin God forgives and hold not against a man. The fact that sin can be forgiven is clear throughout scripture, but the fact sin is also punishable even after the original punishment of death that began with Adam and Eve fall. Cain found himself cast out of God’s sight and sins never forgiven. Then you find Noah a man imperfect by his need to be drunk, but forgiven many and justified by God’s grace. Then there Abraham through faith receives forgiveness and a promise of this world to have children as numerous as the stars in the sky. Yet every believer from early years had sin in their life or sin they eventually got rid of. The blessings of being forgiven to know that your name is written in the book of life that you will live forever with God.
The greatest blessing God has bestow on the believe is the knowledge of forgiveness. Yet Christ still had to suffer and die for sin. He had be sacrifice for our sin because of Adam first sin. The man that caused sin to enter the world through disobedience and so Christ had to take sin away through death by burying it with Him. And rising again to bring life through His Word. The old sin gone upon belief and the new sin continually forgiven, but never a license to sin and that is why God still punishes the believer through correction. Yet the blessing is that God is merciful, that God is gracious and God shows to each believer the blessedness of his grace. The beatitudes are the blessings, yet it is more then that. It is about the wisdom of God to allow the believer to know that he is blessed, if he is poor in spirit, if he mourns if he is meek, if he is hungry and thirsty for righteousness, if he is merciful, pure in heart, and revile and persecuted you for righteousness,. Lot of reason to be blessed by God but the reward of that blessings has to do with salvation and eternal life. Receiving spiritual strength in when weak, comfort when mourning, faith when poor in spirit there is the kingdom of heaven and so forth and so on.
Why is all this wisdom, the same reason it is wise not to hide the light of Christ under a bush but let it shine forth. Let God’s word shine forth, so men will praise God. After all those that are blessed by God are the salt of the world and without the salt the world is destroyed by those that think their own power is good enough to control the world. On can not ignore God. One can not ignore the fact if you take God out of school by removing Christian children you are loosing the light within the school house. You are causing a society to be raised without God within the public system. There things taught in the world that not taught by Christians as being okay. That okay. It okay to be different as long as one obeys the same rules in public life. The world needs to understand the blessings of God’s people, but they can not if we are not a light in the world of darkness. Truth is the world does not want us there, but we exist. In truth if they believe in their own liberty of freedom, they to need to respect those different from them as well, instead of shoving us out they need to say come on and join us and show us the difference by allowing us to see you living for God in this world.
Dear Heavenly Father the wisdom of your blessings to reminds of you love, to reminds us we can not hide from the world your blessings, they need to see your word active in our lfie. In Jesus precious name, Amen.
