Because I Thought 04/29/2021
Daily Devotions: by Christina FarrisGenesis 20:1-18 KJV
1 And Abraham journeyed from thence toward the south country, and dwelled between Kadesh and Shur, and sojourned in Gerar.
2 And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, She is my sister: and Abimelech king of Gerar sent, and took Sarah.
3 But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him, Behold, thou art but a dead man, for the woman which thou hast taken; for she is a man's wife.
4 But Abimelech had not come near her: and he said, Lord, wilt thou slay also a righteous nation?
5 Said he not unto me, She is my sister? and she, even she herself said, He is my brother: in the integrity of my heart and innocency of my hands have I done this.
6 And God said unto him in a dream, Yea, I know that thou didst this in the integrity of thy heart; for I also withheld thee from sinning against me: therefore suffered I thee not to touch her.
7 Now therefore restore the man his wife; for he is a prophet, and he shall pray for thee, and thou shalt live: and if thou restore her not, know thou that thou shalt surely die, thou, and all that are thine.
8 Therefore Abimelech rose early in the morning, and called all his servants, and told all these things in their ears: and the men were sore afraid.
9 Then Abimelech called Abraham, and said unto him, What hast thou done unto us? and what have I offended thee, that thou hast brought on me and on my kingdom a great sin? thou hast done deeds unto me that ought not to be done.
10 And Abimelech said unto Abraham, What sawest thou, that thou hast done this thing?
11 And Abraham said, Because I thought, Surely the fear of God is not in this place; and they will slay me for my wife's sake.
12 And yet indeed she is my sister; she is the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife.
13 And it came to pass, when God caused me to wander from my father's house, that I said unto her, This is thy kindness which thou shalt shew unto me; at every place whither we shall come, say of me, He is my brother.
14 And Abimelech took sheep, and oxen, and menservants, and womenservants, and gave them unto Abraham, and restored him Sarah his wife.
15 And Abimelech said, Behold, my land is before thee: dwell where it pleaseth thee.
16 And unto Sarah he said, Behold, I have given thy brother a thousand pieces of silver: behold, he is to thee a covering of the eyes, unto all that are with thee, and with all other: thus she was reproved.
17 So Abraham prayed unto God: and God healed Abimelech, and his wife, and his maidservants; and they bare children.
18 For the LORD had fast closed up all the wombs of the house of Abimelech, because of Sarah Abraham's wife.
Starting of todays lesson on verse 11 where it says "Because I Thought". How many mistakes do we make because of our own thinking. First of all Abraham was going to a place God had prepared especially for his family. Two Abraham first wife would have his offspring that would inherit the Promise Land. Now remember our hindsight is fully 20/20 here, but if we think with our mind a minute, at what did Abraham believe, preceive and understand about this promise from God. Considering Abraham story starts in chapter 13 of the book of Genesis and this is chapter 20, I believe Abraham knew alot about God's plan for his family, yet his humanity only allowed him to look with his eyes at the idolatry nation and see a nation that might lust after his wife, who biological was also his half sister. Abraham said he had Sarah proclaim she was Abraham sister because he thought the fear of God was not in this place. Thought in retrospect it is not a lie but a half truth, it still was because Abraham thought.
Did it matter if this place feared God? Did it matter if King Abimelech feared God? Was Abraham half truth justifiable, not if we look at it from the perspective God is in control. Not if we look from the perspective nothing going to happen that is not going to be used for God's purpose. And so Abraham words "because I thought", would be use to increase his wealth, and give him land for his choosing of where he desired to live. The words "because I thought" you would not fear God was enough to help Abraham to understand his own folly in the situation that the king and his family to be curse from God. The punishment of unable to have children befell Abimelech and his family and it would be remove when Abraham prayed and offer sacrifices to God. Abimelech fear did not cause him to hurt Abraham and his wife Sarah, but to bless them.
The Philitines in the book of Judges found themselves in trouble with God not only fearing God but not willing to bow to a God they feared. However they understood the need to have a sacrifice be given to Israel God to have the curse off their life. The King Abilemech and his family feared the God of Abraham, and reverence him, though they worshipped idols. People either act in fear with violence or with reverence, and this case the king and his family revered God enough to allow Abraham to live among their people and in his region giving him land.
Where are we today, are we thinking with our brain or seeking God for direction, this may of worked out well for Abraham, but was there another avenue he could of taken. Could he not of defrauded the king and his people with his half truth to keep the king and people from sinning? Perhaps, but would Abraham had died because Sarah was a beautiful woman? We truly do know the answer, because God is in control and his promises are true. Is our thoughts getting us into trouble, someone else or blessing us? Consider one's own actions before getting someone in trouble with God. Rely on God's promises, that he instills in your heart.
Despite the fact Abilemech sinned against God, did he not have protection from God. Did not God stop him from taking Sarah to be his wife. Did not God stop him because he knew Abilemech heart. He corrected King Abilemech, because the king desires Sarah to be his wife, not knowing she was already married. God spoke to King Abilemech about his intentions. When the king found out he had sinned and that was why the womb of his family been dried up, he sought Abraham to make things right with both Abraham and Abraham's God. God is able to correct our thoughts. Able to help us understand our miss guided thoughts is because we did not trusting in God's promises and word.
Dear Heavenly Father help us to hold to your word and not to our own thoughts in our own situation. In Jesus precious name, Amen.
