Daily Devotions:
by Christina Farris

Luke 6:1-12 KJV
1 And it came to pass on the second sabbath after the first, that he went through the corn fields; and his disciples plucked the ears of corn, and did eat, rubbing them in their hands.
2 And certain of the Pharisees said unto them, Why do ye that which is not lawful to do on the sabbath days?
3 And Jesus answering them said, Have ye not read so much as this, what David did, when himself was an hungred, and they which were with him;
4 How he went into the house of God, and did take and eat the shewbread, and gave also to them that were with him; which it is not lawful to eat but for the priests alone?
5 And he said unto them, That the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.
6 And it came to pass also on another sabbath, that he entered into the synagogue and taught: and there was a man whose right hand was withered.
7 And the scribes and Pharisees watched him, whether he would heal on the sabbath day; that they might find an accusation against him.
8 But he knew their thoughts, and said to the man which had the withered hand, Rise up, and stand forth in the midst. And he arose and stood forth.
9 Then said Jesus unto them, I will ask you one thing; Is it lawful on the sabbath days to do good, or to do evil? to save life, or to destroy it?
10 And looking round about upon them all, he said unto the man, Stretch forth thy hand. And he did so: and his hand was restored whole as the other.
11 And they were filled with madness; and communed one with another what they might do to Jesus.
12 And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.

Day of rest for the Lord is much like someone stopping in the middle of a task to admire their creation or a job in progress. God created the world in six days, but his work was only beginning. He looked over the work of his hands and the very next day went about tending to his creation. If it Saturday don't fret if you in an accident or injured and think God is not going to rescue you because he on break, no even Jesus healed on the Sabbath.

Here is my point this morning is the Sabbath made for God or for man. Genesis and Exodus says Sabbath is made for God, and in John 6 it declares that man is Lord of the Sabbath. How do we define this, if God is resting from his work is man in charge of that day? Man has declare Sabbath day being a time to worship and praise God. Yet man is not a God to be Lord of any day. Yet he has instruction to take care and to watch over God's creation. Two are we God's creation are we God, ask my cat if he think he is boss, yet he knows that his order of a meal will not get it any quicker with his meows. The point being God gives man responsibility to over see his work while he rest. It is like a minister taking a nap on the Sabbath day after Sunday meal, his kids know not to wake him. Yet if they do they know the wrath of mom will be first and the wrath of dad will be next if kids do not mind mom. Kids have several hours in which to tear apart the house, read a book or go outside as long as they do not get into trouble. God in heaven is like our earth parents on the Sabbath, he still in control and he still around, but he taking that time off to examine his work and the progress of his work.

What does this have to do with our subject of being Lord of the Sabbath. It is giving man the idea he can run the earth without God, no. Prehaps it was the day after the Sabbath that God went to see Adam and Eve only to find they had broke his law of not eating from the tree of knowledge. Now God is showing man what happens when he leaves us to our own devices. Jesus disciples are eating corn on the Sabbath and the Priest begin to question this very action. Was not bread of manna gather for two days. However where did Manna come from but God. Where does our food come from the fields and if they do not continue growing then there be no food to eat, this type of food is provision of God even on the Sabbath. What makes corn growing different then Manna? God had to literally provide it from heaven, it did not come growing in a field. It came by his own hand. Shewbread was for the priest of God but was the bread the word of God that was suppose to feed the priest spiritually and not so much physically beyond ritualism. If ritualism is hindering spirituality it is an error, if tradition is starving one physically it become a task master and not a code of conduct to govern oneself.

God does not desire man to be at a place we ignore his laws, but he does not want us to disobey his commands when it comes to his provision of things like Manna. Corn though created by God was not Manna in regards to having to produce it for man's survival. God made a provision in which to gather extra amount of manna so he could keep his day of rest. Corn grew in the field and did not need attention by God for it to grow.

Corn is like a thistle to the Priest who had a diet of shewbread, perhaps even envious of the disciples eating corn. Yet why were the disciples not eating bread as priest of God did? It not that Jesus never provided bread or meat for the people, this was an available meal one shucking of the corn ear and then it can be consumed. Shew bread was a reminder to the Priest of the spiritual manna in which they were to feed the people. They to had to consume the bread to be able to feed God's people. The Priest got stuck in tradition and lost the spiritual application of the shew bread. Then Jesus went and healed a man with a whither hand, and he asked was it lawful to do good or to do evil on the Sabbath?

God does do benelovent work on the Sabbath, and he cares for his flock, but he figures he does not need to tells us every moment of our life what to do either. If we obey him we following in his ways. The children of the world that are in disobedience to the God they find themselves like Adam and Eve out and about ready to sin, because of Eve was willing to listen to the serpent and not God. How many fruit trees could Eve eat from yet she had to see one and lust after it. That my friends is the trouble God writes his laws for us to live by them, giving us a way out, but do we take it. Jesus was questioning why King David could eat the bread made for the Priest to eat, only to meet with more anger when he healed. What was the Priest intent to try and trap Jesus. The act of trapping not of God. Yet the Priest would continue to try and trap Jesus with his words and deeds. Then the money changers gave them opportunity because it effect legal law of causing riotest act.

A believer learns to build their actions based on the word of God and not their desires or wants. A believer obedience stops wrath of God coming because God's wrath is only meant for children of disobedience. When we stop there and think God is looking for men and women whether he speaking continually, he does not have to over shadow us all the time with his word. His word there for us to follow because we love him back.

When I think of rebellion of kids and young adults, if I could speak also from experience what if a minister had said are you about pleasing yourself, as a believer or pleasing God in obedience to him. What did you say many rebellious kids believe in God but the idea of pleasing God in our behavior has not reach their ears, meaning they hear but their desire for their ownself is outweighing what God desire for them is.

Worm were found in manna gather for more then one day during six days of the week but one. Are we obeying God until it comes to our desires. Are we building our life on sinful desires or wants and not what would Jesus do. Worms of disobedience will cause many things in life to not only stink but not be edible for others to consume. Ever discussed past sin with those who are still living in that sin. It like a roundtable of discussion of yep been there done that, but has no value to sharing Christ beyond relating that one has given that life style up and did so because of Jesus. That part of your life stinks because you wasted it thinking you could get ahead in life in someway or satisfy one's own need, but when we comply to God's way what happens, we find a better way of living and our desires of our heart truly granted.

Dear Heavenly Father, we allow you to rest on Sabbath, knowing you there for us, and knowing that you expect us to obey you even on your day of rest. Let us trust in you and be obedient to your word and not just on Sabbath day rest. In Jesus precious name, Amen.

Continual Scripture Study: Exodus 16:23-30 KJV
23 And he said unto them, This is that which the LORD hath said, To morrow is the rest of the holy sabbath unto the LORD: bake that which ye will bake to day, and seethe that ye will seethe; and that which remaineth over lay up for you to be kept until the morning.
24 And they laid it up till the morning, as Moses bade: and it did not stink, neither was there any worm therein.
25 And Moses said, Eat that to day; for to day is a sabbath unto the LORD: to day ye shall not find it in the field.
26 Six days ye shall gather it; but on the seventh day, which is the sabbath, in it there shall be none.
27 And it came to pass, that there went out some of the people on the seventh day for to gather, and they found none.
28 And the LORD said unto Moses, How long refuse ye to keep my commandments and my laws?
29 See, for that the LORD hath given you the sabbath, therefore he giveth you on the sixth day the bread of two days; abide ye every man in his place, let no man go out of his place on the seventh day.
30 So the people rested on the seventh day.

Genesis 2:1-3 KJV
1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.
2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.
3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.
