Daily Devotions:
by Christina Farris

Acts 1:1-15 KJV
1 The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach,
2 Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen:
3 To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God:
4 And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.
5 For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.
6 When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?
7 And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.
8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
9 And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.
10 And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel;
11 Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.
12 Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is from Jerusalem a sabbath day's journey.
13 And when they were come in, they went up into an upper room, where abode both Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James.
14 These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.
15 And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, and said, (the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty,)

Ever thought for a moment of the fact there were only 120 that were in the upper room after the events of Christ resurrection, and his final ascension into heaven where we told he will one day return in like manner in a cloud. That time would not be known to anyone but the Father. The 120 were not necessarily a witness to the ascension. Only a small group of people were gathering before the coming of the Holy Spirit, which will be Sunday's message. Perhaps the fact there were only few tells us that the crowd in Jerusalem were people only there for the celebration of the Passover feast. People came from all over to only depart once more. Had these events shakened them of seeing a resurrection, earthquake and dead rise from the grave. I suspect many may not of understood that those that march into Jerusalem were dead that were brought back to life. I suspect that only those in Jerusalem understood what just occurred. Just because the veil was ripped and tombs doors were split, was cause and effect of earthquake, nothing new. The magnitude of the event seems like it would of rattled more people, but it had not. Jesus was with them forty days teaching and preaching until the day he was taken up. The elapse of time is what changed the entire event of being a magnitude of followers, to only a few followers.

If you breakdown Corona virus, as being a cold, flu and pink eye that developed into a severe infection causing a prolong hospital stay with ventalator it does not sound so evil, but a normal event this time of year for many elderly, sick, and disabled, who may or may not survive. The numbers really not that strange for this time of year, besides the fact it was happening quickly and speedily compared to normal route of similiar flue/cold like symptoms. In a few months only memory will be 2020 started out way different then other years gone before it, almost like talking about the worse blizzard, rainy season or drought, for others they will be still mourning love ones that they could not sit by their side during those final moments because of the serious of the situation.

Did the events during passover shake the people, no doubt but to those not knowing or understanding how special these events were, it was just another criminal being crucified, another man dying and another man being laid in an empty tomb and the soldiers were paid to say his body was just stolen. The best kept secret that their Savior Jesus had arose and no longer in the grave. People walked away to wait for another year when they walk to Jerusalem enjoy the Passover and return home. Yet a wild fire was fixing to spread concerning this Jesus, his cross and his resurrection that would shake and vibrate the world for decades. It is better then the shot heard run the world that lit a fire against Hilter and his armies. This is a fire that fights the evil of darkness, fights the dangerous of the anti christ, and battles the demons of Satan himself. This is a fire that heals the sick and lame. It is a fire that still opens the eyes of the blind and opens deaf ears. It is a fire that still prophecizes. It is the fire of the Holy Spirit sent from God to the disciples to enable them to do the work of Christ on earth, to teach, and preach about a man name Jesus who is not only Son of God but is God to deliver man from sin and the evils of this world, as well has how to live. Teach people the importance of godly love, hope, forgiveness, patience, meekness, gentleness, longsuffering and so forth.

What is taught first about Jesus perhaps who he is that he came to set us free from our sins, and then his story how he came as a man to save a sinner such as all of us. How we are saved through belief in Him. How through his death and resurrection our sins are buried and how through his resurrection we are raised up into new life with Christ, because of faith and the fact his word is still true and not dead for Christ is both flesh and word. Both coming so we could see the reality of our faith.

The dead taken before they were missed, and who would worry about a bunch of empty tombs. Egyptians built pyramids and they did not seem to cause a stir until discovered. The number 120 are those that understood what had happened and knew that the event coming was to empower them to share the Gospel. What was stopping the group of believers, not a thing. The power from God would enable those in attendance to not only preach but to baptize not just with water as John did but the power of the Holy Spirit. That same power that caused men to design and build the temple, lead Moses through the wilderness, that allowed David to kill Goliathe and fight even bigger battles to vicotry, enabled the prophets of old to prophesy of Christ coming, death and resurrection. 70 elders at the time of Moses were given the power to prophesy and to help Moses in his duty as judges and teachers of the people. God was enabling the disciples not only to preach, teach, prophecy and heal, but also teach how God must ordain or empower not man to do the work of ministry. Disciple could still tell the story of Jesus but the empowerment had to come from God to enable man to baptize by power of God. To enable others to see God's power through healing, prophecy, preaching and so forth. What group would believe in Jesus without miracles, without the work of Christ being present in lives of both believers and non beleivers.

If you are a believer today, believing but not receiving of the knowledge of God's power in your life, ask yourself why? Even the devil believes and trembles, but lives in disobedience, knowing God's wrath is coming on his life and never desiring change. What then can we say when we desire change by Conviction of God's word, but that it is the power of God prompting our hearts to repentance and to turn from evil, to obey him, by his power. Ever heard a sermon that convicted the heart of man including your own, then you know God has visited you. It not a sermon that is done by magician act trying to make a person repent, but the word of God coming forth to convict the heart of man.

Dear Heavenly Father, there may of been few that believe what they witnessed, but you took those few and spreaded your Gospel by the power of the Holy Spirit upon your people, enable the few so the whole world can believe even in these darkened days. In Jesus precious name, Amen.
