The Empty Tomb 3/31/2024
Daily Devotions: by Christina FarrisLuke 24:1-44 KJV
Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them.
And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre.
And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus.
And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments:
And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead?
He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee,
Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.
And they remembered his words,
And returned from the sepulchre, and told all these things unto the eleven, and to all the rest.
It was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and other women that were with them, which told these things unto the apostles.
And their words seemed to them as idle tales, and they believed them not.
Then arose Peter, and ran unto the sepulchre; and stooping down, he beheld the linen clothes laid by themselves, and departed, wondering in himself at that which was come to pass.
And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs.
And they talked together of all these things which had happened.
And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them.
But their eyes were holden that they should not know him.
And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad?
And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days?
And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people:
And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him.
But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done.
Yea, and certain women also of our company made us astonished, which were early at the sepulchre;
And when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, which said that he was alive.
And certain of them which were with us went to the sepulchre, and found it even so as the women had said: but him they saw not.
Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken:
Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?
And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.
And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they went: and he made as though he would have gone further.
But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them.
And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them.
And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight.
And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?
And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them,
Saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon.
And they told what things were done in the way, and how he was known of them in breaking of bread.
And as they thus spake, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.
But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit.
And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts?
Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.
And when he had thus spoken, he shewed them his hands and his feet.
And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have ye here any meat?
And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, and of an honeycomb.
And he took it, and did eat before them.
And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.
Every Easter I like going to Matthew account because it is more vivid of what happened surround the resurrection, but this year we are in Luke and choosing to teach from Luke's point of view. The reality of the resurrection was not clear to the eleven remaining disciples for Judas is dead. Nor is the woman prepared to see an empty tomb.
The other night I dropped a light I keep near the bed that easily accessible in the night. It about 6 inches by 3 inches square. Why it not velcro to the wall I dont know. But it is handy to see by in the middle of the night. Well the cat knocked it in the floor at two in the morning. I turned the over head light on to find it because feeling around for it came to no avail. I looked under the bed, beside the bed and between the table and bed, and around some other objects. Even twisting and hanging my head over the bed with hands on floor looking in all direction for a light with batteries that were off. Now with demaculent degeneration it easy to miss things but it often not noticeable at the early stage until you go hunting for something. My husband goes gets my phone. I turn the flashlight on it. Best tool on the phone. I repeated my search. Now it been fifteen minutes the whole house is wide awake and the animals are trying to help too. About to give up, I handed the phone to my husband. And It is between the table and the bed and took him five seconds. Something wrong with the picture, then realize it my eyes again, not seeing clearly and was not seeing straight on. That part of the vision problem.
I will tell you there is a point to this. If we only read one Gospel a person will get a narrow view of God's word and not the wide view God wanted us to have by giving us four Gospels and a bunch of other books before and after to help lead and direct people who knows him not. Today we looking at a narrow view but the most important view that all four Gospels agree on. You can go to any Gospel and find it. They agree Christ arose. Now two gospel tells how Rome did not believe and that in Matthew and I think Mark. In Luke it speaks of unbelief turned to belief and amazement. The women were first to know of the empty tomb. Women were first to know of Christ coming in their present time, too. Women were at the cross and knew it was impossible for Jesus to be alive. Yet without seeing Jesus but two heavenly angels that told them he is not here but he has risen and to go and tell the disciples this. Well we know someone made it to the disciples believing and disciples ran to see the empty grave. Other accounts tell how Mary seen him alive first before going and tell the disciples.
The narrow view is only seeing empty tomb without hope. Peter and John walked a good journey to a neighboring town. On this journey they talked to a stranger about the events that had occured, only to realize they are talking to Jesus. Jesus leaves and the two disciples go running back to the upper room to talk and tell them they seen Jesus and he is alive.
The narrow view is how can this be. If we ever experience true prophesy or other events that are not normal they will help in unbelief but events in life fade in time. Recorded prophecy can be your best friend to see the possibility. The move of God is far reaching. The hand of God unchanging. People believe without hard evidence of an empty tomb or seeing Jesus, because of joy and peace others seem to have. The love of others being enough. These things are tangible and easily leave a person dying in bad soil because roots or foundation is not firmly planted. How do we grow without facts without experiences of faith. Faith is made stronger by prophesy in the word of God. There is over a thousand pages to read. When God's word speaks to your heart claim it and hold on to it. Take it as a fact what God can do and will do because Jesus is risen. Cant get to empty tomb then start small. "The Sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withered the grass and flower thereof falleth and grace of fashion of it perish: so shall the rich man fade away in his ways"(James 1:11). Corny verse to start with but we know when the sun rises thing die never to relive just like the ways of rich men. Why is this verse more believable then Jesus is risen, because it still witnessed in the world today and will be until the heaven and earth disappear. Yet science has only seen stars die not a whole planet. Nine planets visible with a telescope is still visible today. Why is this important. There things visible I say that can be still seen, no questions asked. God's word throughout has many things that can be believed.
Knowledge and faith that Jesus arose is what our very hope of eternal life is built on. Archaelogist want to disprove it. There are things understood by all of us in scripture but the resurrection takes faith on the redeemer Jesus who lives.
Peter did not experience an angel, he experience the empty tomb and then the appearance of Jesus cloaked and not recognized until he spoke words of prophesy. Prophesy given and reassurance there and he went to share with the disciples their experience with a stranger who disappeared. In that upper room all disciples seen him. Jesus tgen appeared to all the disciples and gave physical signs; first his scars and then he ate some food.
The narrow view of empty tomb is needed to know he lives. Empty is proof something happened but the reality came of what it meant not because of the woman's experience but there own personal experience with Christ. Until you receive truth of hope, your experience with Christ is that there was empty tomb. Receive Christ today as Lord and let your begin with Jesus is risen.
Dear Heavenly Father bring our hearts from the tomb is empty but to he has rise. In Jesus precious name, Amen.
