Daily Devotions:
by Christina Farris

Luke 22:39-54 KJV
39 And he came out, and went, as he was wont, to the mount of Olives; and his disciples also followed him.
40 And when he was at the place, he said unto them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation.
41 And he was withdrawn from them about a stone's cast, and kneeled down, and prayed,
42 Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.
43 And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him.
44 And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.
45 And when he rose up from prayer, and was come to his disciples, he found them sleeping for sorrow,
46 And said unto them, Why sleep ye? rise and pray, lest ye enter into temptation.
47 And while he yet spake, behold a multitude, and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them, and drew near unto Jesus to kiss him.
48 But Jesus said unto him, Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss?
49 When they which were about him saw what would follow, they said unto him, Lord, shall we smite with the sword?
50 And one of them smote the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear.
51 And Jesus answered and said, Suffer ye thus far. And he touched his ear, and healed him.
52 Then Jesus said unto the chief priests, and captains of the temple, and the elders, which were come to him, Be ye come out, as against a thief, with swords and staves?
53 When I was daily with you in the temple, ye stretched forth no hands against me: but this is your hour, and the power of darkness.
54 Then took they him, and led him, and brought him into the high priest's house. And Peter followed afar off.

The garden scene is the scene John covers only with Christ prayer. Other Gospels speak more deeply of Christ's sweating drops of blood and him crying not my will but yours be done. In Christ's humanity he is experiencing every feeling a man might before his trial and impending death. He would would be experiencing pain. Think about the hour before any major surgery you know despite medication will feel some pain and perhaps pain like you never experience. However most doctors will not tell you about discomfort but will treat it afterwards. Reality comes when you discover despite the fact you can move you are better off not.

There is point I dont think Christ was afraid of what was to come or the cross. Those tears and sweat like blood was shed for his disciples he spoke to God about because it would be a gruesome act of hate upon him that was to come. It it would be witness to those who followed him. Remember Jesus saying he was praying for Peter, why, because Peter had not the strength to stand up to those around that he was a follower of Jesus. Lets get back to the garden as Jesus prayed an angel came to strengthen him. This is not recorded in other Gospels. Yet Luke record's at the time of Christ coming, God using angels to announced Christ coming. Angel came to give Christ strength. I think of love message from God saying see you soon. Father's will being more then the cross but to return him home. To bring him back to him alive and transformed into the heavenly being he already was in reality. To take the protector cloak of flesh off and return with the cloak of eternal life. No one knows what the angel spoke but his Spirit being same as the Father needed no more communication, but his Son in the disguise of man needed a touch from above. Christ is heartbroken/ agony over his disciples.

He rose from prayer and woke his disciples and told them not to enter in to temptation. And Soldiers of the Sanhendrin(Jewish Court) approached with Judas, Judas betrays Jesus with a kiss. The one kiss that truly noted in scripture. No other kiss had the power to betray Jesus. Disciples asked Jesus not positive what to do says do we fight now. Before Jesus could speak, Peter cut his cousin Malchus ear off who was a High Priest servant. His cousin would speak to Peter at the firelight outside the trial and Peter denies knowing Jesus. How if scripture does not say who Malchus is besides servant of High Priest. The answer is found by scholars that have done intensive reseach into the history that is recorded. Look through different Bible dictionaries and Commentaries to find certain Bible facts not in scripture. This speaks of where and why Peter's denial took place. Think on it this man lost his ear by Peter and yet no retailation on his cousin because Jesus healed his ear.

Now Christ ask the soldiers "you come with knives, and swords as if I was a thief". He could of taken him in broad daylight but they chose the power of darkness. The soldiers arrested him and lead him away with Peter following some distance behind.

What can we learn the enemy likes the hours of night to hide their evil acts. Yet devil cares little the hour now. They do things with their enemy watching. What we can also l learn is that Jesus will intercede for his people in their hour of protection in their hour of need. That God(the Father, Son and Holy Spirit) cares for us that follow him.

Dear Heavenly Father, That for carong about the needs of Your people in their future hour of need. Give your people strength. In Jesus precious name, Amen.

Continual Scripture Study: John 18:10 KJV
10 Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.
