The Lord's Supper Part 2 3/27/2024
Daily Devotions: by Christina FarrisLuke 22:19-38 KJV
19 And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.
20 Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.
21 But, behold, the hand of him that betrayeth me is with me on the table. 22 And truly the Son of man goeth, as it was determined: but woe unto that man by whom he is betrayed!
23 And they began to enquire among themselves, which of them it was that should do this thing.
24 And there was also a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the greatest.
25 And he said unto them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors.
26 But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve.
27 For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that serveth.
28 Ye are they which have continued with me in my temptations.
29 And I appoint unto you a kingdom, as my Father hath appointed unto me;
30 That ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
31 And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat:
32 But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.
33 And he said unto him, Lord, I am ready to go with thee, both into prison, and to death.
34 And he said, I tell thee, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, before that thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me.
35 And he said unto them, When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye any thing? And they said, Nothing.
36 Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.
37 For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning me have an end.
38 And they said, Lord, behold, here are two swords. And he said unto them, It is enough. It hard not to write about the Lord's Supper in Luke without dividing it up. Luke never record who would betray Jesus at the table but declares his fate. I want to say how often children are warned of their fate at the supper table but the slight lecture never speaks to which child is guilty, yet they perhaps know which it was of their siblings. Disciples being a type of brotherhood know that when Jesus speaks of doom or woe to one sitting at the table, they go about asking who would betray Jesus. With this discussion who would be the greatest in the kingdom. Jesus explains the greatest is the one that does not exercise Lordship over each other as the gentiles do but instead is the one that serves. No one is to sit to be served should think himself higher up then the server.
God appointd Christ a kingdom as Jesus has appointed his disciples to rule over the Jews. Jesus is the word of God so he does rule over the Jews that follow the laws of God. New Covenant waa not issued in yet at this time. When the new kingdom or covenant comes it serves all people despite back ground, the law we carry in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who writes the laws there. First law is to love God(Father, Son, and Holy Spirit). Second law to love others as you would yourself.
Then the conversation changes to Peter being shifted as wheat by Satan and he says he tells Peter he praying for him. Jesus discourse/prayer with his Father by his Spirit the Holy Ghost. Satan wants to destroy him as he would Judas. Peter's hour of denial would come and the rooster would crow three times. His hour of remembering Jesus' words came with the rooster crow, yet with his sorrow he would find forgiveness.
There times we are tested or tempted by the enemy. We do the opposite by convictions. We have to allow ourselves time to know oue own humanity and reaction to what is coming. Peter was ready to go to war with Jesus or follow him to the end but he was not yet ready. Peter growing in his faith never imagined what Jesus was going to endure. The fact Jesus was between him and God during this time of his denial of knowing Jesus. Peter knew someone was waging war in his hour of need against the enemy.
We know in our own hour of need the Holy Spirit intercedes in our life. Jesus could not intercede for Judas because he was allowing Satan to rule him by giving him his desire of greed and yet he did this by the will of God, yet he still made the decision to betray not because of the will of God, though it be God's will for it to be carried out was happening. It was more of Judas' anger and resentment cause him to do the unthinkable called betrayal. He could of said God I want to obey with my heart. What would you have me do and instead It was more like Priest I hear you got a job and I can deliver for thirty pieces of silver. God was not in Judas' decision making.
Dear Heavenly Father teach us to serve, and to obey despite the hour of temptation and testing. Help to remember when we fail because of our humanity we have a forgiving Heavenly Father that loves us and stands with His Son against the enemy in our lives by His Spirit. In Jesus precious, Amen. 26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
1 Peter 5:7-11 KJV
7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.
8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
9 Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.
10 But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.
11 To him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
