Daily Devotions: by Christina FarrisLuke 8:22-25 KJV
22 Now it came to pass on a certain day, that he went into a ship with his disciples: and he said unto them, Let us go over unto the other side of the lake. And they launched forth.
23 But as they sailed he fell asleep: and there came down a storm of wind on the lake; and they were filled with water, and were in jeopardy.
24 And they came to him, and awoke him, saying, Master, master, we perish. Then he arose, and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water: and they ceased, and there was a calm.
25 And he said unto them, Where is your faith? And they being afraid wondered, saying one to another, What manner of man is this! for he commandeth even the winds and water, and they obey him.<
Jesus was asleep aboard the ship when a storm came up. His disciples came and woke him afraid they were about to drown. Jesus rebuke the wind and the raging water. The wind and water ceased. Jesus said,"where is your faith"?
Where was the disciples' faith? It was in the knowledge of human mind of the waves are rough and wind is dangerous and there nothing one can do but account for who on board and pray that if they had to abandon ship they some how can make it ashore without drowning because the storm is fixing to rip the ship a part. Ever sat in a building on a fierce storm and heard the window shake and the wind whip whatever is outside perhaps flying with the wind whipping it down the street. Did you ever wonder if the structure would come apart you were sitting in? What about sitting through an earthquake? Did you pray? Did you ask Jesus to calm the storm? Or was your focus on the storm? Nothing wrong with being aware of what going on around you but did you seek Jesus in the storm? Our fear can over come us to the point one's preparation for what if or what may, that one is taken back by the what if nothing happens comes to pass first. Well something did happen when the disciples sought Jesus. There mental breakdown of preparation to abandon ship never happened. All that fear for what purpose.
Number one it is not the day for Jesus and his disciples to die. Number two, they finally awoke the right person without understanding he could do something about the storm. Three, there is no doubt they had let fear affect Jesus' nap by waking him. Four, Jesus was not concerned about the storm but the location of there faith? Five, though Jesus rebuke the storm a new fear affected the disciples became of the power Jesus had over the storm when the wind and water obeyed Jesus. The disciples faith once more transformed into fear.
Fear in reverence and awe is healthy fear in relationship to ones God, Lord and Savior. Fear of not being able to change a situation is not healthy. Fear with a healthy solution besides abandon ship is problem solving. One, if it not your day to die and your certain of it why fear when you are faced with abandoning the ship. Two why not wake Jesus(pray) if you know he has the power to handle the storm. Three are you going to pray without fully grasping his power or pray with faith that his power can calm the storm? What about if one has to abandon ship and survive the waves will you then be in awe of God's amazing grace or only left wondering why he save you? Are you in fear of his reality. Four, Jesus not concern about the storm he resting, so why are you? Our faith needs to be on Jesus. We rest better when our mind is not on what our eyes and mind preceive. Nothing wrong with a life jacket and knowing what you maybe using for a surf board. Five let your fear rest on your Creator and Savior. Keep your faith on the one that can calm the storm, prevent the storm and can take you through the storm. What is your storm and where is your faith today? Hopefully your resting on God's greatest blessing Jesus and his word.
Dear Heavenly Father you through Christ Jesus can calm the storms in our life or take us through for a greater purpose, In Jesus precious name, Amen. Continual Scripture Study: Micah 7:7 KJV
