Daily Devotions:
by Christina Farris

Luke 18:18-23 KJV
18 And a certain ruler asked him, saying, Good Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?
19 And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? none is good, save one, that is, God.
20 Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother.
21 And he said, All these have I kept from my youth up.
22 Now when Jesus heard these things, he said unto him, Yet lackest thou one thing: sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me.
23 And when he heard this, he was very sorrowful: for he was very rich.

Christ in his humanity revealing himself as will hiding his identity to those who understood not who He fully was. He asked the man why he called him good because none was good but God. The Ruler never answers this but he answers that he kept the commandments. Now a ruler implies someone with authority and it does not mean he was of Jewish faith. What it does mean he obeyed the law of faith God gave Moses, since his youth. He identified obedience to a code of conduct. He recognized Jesus had power or authority to tell him what he had to do to have eternal life. Often minister can tell you how to get saved through faith in Jesus. But the afraid to do something Jesus also tell those he healed and those he talk to and that was go and sin no more.

Jesus in this passage tells this man something else. He tells to sell all his worldly possession to the poor and follow him. His obedience to the law was not the problem. His obedienve to surrender all he had to follow Jesus. The ruler was a man of authority. Authority that can be in opposition to God's ways and reliance on wealth.

The man was sorrowful because he valued his possessions. What things, desires and more keeps you from following Jesus. It the things or desires, it the spiritual value we put on them instead of God. God never not told man not to store or save. Joseph interpretation of the Pharaoh saved him, because when famine came all of Egypt had provision including surrounding areas. Our trust on material things we can see is a reality. Jesus teaching may of sounded hard but he got to the root of the problem of the rich ruler. Our trust must be in God first, to follow Jesus. To God's salvation plan for man and believe in Jesus.

Dear Heavenly Father help us to trust in you. To follow in your pathway fully trsting in your power to provide, In Jesus precious name, Amen.

Continual Scripture Study: Luke 12:21-23 KJV
21 So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.
22 And he said unto his disciples, Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat; neither for the body, what ye shall put on.
23 The life is more than meat, and the body is more than raiment.
