Daily Devotions:
by Christina Farris

Acts 8:9-25 KJV
9 But there was a certain man, called Simon, which beforetime in the same city used sorcery, and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one:
10 To whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, This man is the great power of God.
11 And to him they had regard, because that of long time he had bewitched them with sorceries.
12 But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.
13 Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done.
14 Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:
15 Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost:
16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)
17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.
18 And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money,
19 Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost.
20 But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money.
21 Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God.
22 Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee.
23 For I perceive that thou art in the gall of bitterness, and in the bond of iniquity.
24 Then answered Simon, and said, Pray ye to the Lord for me, that none of these things which ye have spoken come upon me.
25 And they, when they had testified and preached the word of the Lord, returned to Jerusalem, and preached the gospel in many villages of the Samaritans.

There is nothing we can not repent of but our need of correction may come from an elder. There are times when people in another religion or occult will get saved but they are carrying baggage in the form of temptation that does not belong. Simon was a man who got saved but thought he could buy the real healing power.

Philip had come preaching Christ and even Simon the sorcer believed. Peter and John heard about the revival in Samaria and came to bear witness. Seeing that they only received the message of Christ preached and laid hands on the converts to receive the Holy Spirit.

How many schools claim to prepare people to preach and teach the Gospel and others try to teach about the Holy Spirit baptism for money. Never thinking about whether they are trying to sell to those seeking money. If a person see a minister of two hundred in a middle class community making over $100,000, same person is going to say I can do that and know not Jesus, the Father or the Holy Spirit, I hope that same person sees the price of college and seminary training and says if God wants me in school he will pay for it. Walks away from the money seeking teachers. Do not get me wrong here Seminary and College providing religious course needs to be about the history and things you can not discover by just reading scripture. This courses often give ministers to pass to ministers, teachers and general public to bring light to the scriptures history being applied in our world today of love, hope and faith. Disciples did not have the historical scripture degree of Paul. However they had three years or more with Jesus to learn from him first hand. Many that read and study learn more about there personal faith when doing so and how to respond and trust Jesus. That my friend takes lifetime of trust in God, because we are ever revolving as human's with each storm and celebration in life.

Simeon was the seminary who thought he could buy the Holy Spirit and make a profit off of God caring nothing about training ministers from the word of God but only the emotionalism that comes from joy of healing and deliverance. Life is short. If you think you will get rich off of God by monetary gain very few ministers ever do. Yet do they have a story of God's provision, that they do. They know Paul own words said he knew what was to be abased and what was to be needless because of hard work given to him. He made tents for a living. When traveling in some areas it would not been necessarily a big market, while other places it was.

There is a point to my madness this morning Simon the sorcer was the man looking at the field of true gift and desiring it for his own financial and godlike power, not knowing God is not for sale. God is a person you can not enslave nor bribe for power or try to purchase his power. God uses his power through his people through prayer, laying on of hands, and prophesy. God uses his power in the world by no need of a mediator however he warns people for his glory amd honor. God's warnings of plagues and storms that he will not prevent and does not prevent, is to demonstrate wrath, judgment, and his authority given in the protection against plagues, and storms by His seal(Holy Spirit) on his people and when believers suffer, it for correction or for the benefit of those needing Jesus. Simons reason for trying to buy has nothing to with God's will in his life or those he served and lorded over.

God gave the word's spoken by Peter that told Simeon he could not buy the power of the Holy Spirit. Simeon had need of another to pray for his repentance and forgiveness. His own grief and shame greater then his own ability to pray. A deep mourning occured. Simeon need exfoliation of lack of understanding and greed.

Peter preach and taught about Christ and the Holy Spirit. We are to preach and share what we know and understand but not use God but allow him to use us.

Dear Heavenly Father we ask you to move in our hearts to full understanding of your power is for your glory and honor, and is not for sale but it is a gift you use in us for your glory. In Jesus precious name, Amen.
