Who Is Your Neighbor 02/07/2024
Daily Devotions: by Christina FarrisLuke 10:25-37 KJV
25 And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?
26 He said unto him, What is written in the law? how readest thou?
27 And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.
28 And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live.
29 But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbour?
30 And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead.
31 And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.
32 And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side.
33 But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him,
34 And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him.
35 And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee.
36 Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves?
37 And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.
The world teaches self reliance and the church tells people to rely on the Lord and without compassion of others we never see God's grace abound. People who can help get tired of those that ask. People who love continue to give. Some give out of their love and not common sense. Some have it to give and love that type of work. Other give from the pockets of others. Never giving from there own means not understanding both are important.
The story today is the story of the good Samaritan. Lawyer asked Jesus how to have eternal life. Jesus wanted to know how he read and understood the law. He said to love the Lord and your neighbor has yourself. Then the lawyer asked,"Who is my neighbor?".
My neighbor is often the people I know with a need I can supply or they are able to supply back. Neighbors helping neighbors out of compassion. It like being stranded on the side of the road who do you call first; 1. Someone that can give you a ride. 2. a tow truck. 3 Your insurance and/4 God and not in that order. If you wait for someone to pass by and stop with compassion you could be waiting a long time unless God told you to wait. There are reasons to wait; 1 no cell phone tower or hedged in by a hill, 2. no one to call, 3 no money to tow it and 4. Your out in the middle of nowhere with no cell tower. I actually live in area cell service does not respond for several miles because the mountains interfer or no tower. Inside the town cell service is never real bad in general but it was not always that way. My first cell phone not enough signal strength at my house. Our neighbors habe change over the years. One of my neighbors said with his horn get out of the road with his horm as my husband and I pulled over because our vehicle broke down. Figured out the problem called my normal mechanic price just way to high and decide to haul it to the house. Called a neighbor who had a good tow truck driver. Then called the insurance people and not last because at this point I am praying that all be okay. Fortunately no one or vehicle was injured beyond standard repair work.
The person that came to check was coming that direction and told his boss he have a look at the problem. Then person three showed up gave my husband keys to her car. Needless to say a lot of neighbors drove by without even a wave. The one perspn nearby picking up garabage outside his house came to see if all was okay why we were on his lot.
There a point if someone been injured many people would of lended a hand or made a phone call. In this story Jesus tells the priest and levi did not even bother to go running down the road to get someone to help. It took a man with a donkey and his caring nature. He was considered outcast of societ because of him being from Samaria, yet he provide aid but ride to inn and paid for his medical care at the inn for a total stranger.
It the compassion of strangers that will make one wonder about the religious world. The story is about who was the man in need's neighbor. The one helping this man in his crisis. The one caring not about traditions to do so.
Dear Heavenly Father help us care about others needs and not be the person that passes by an opportunity to help even if only to be a runner for that help. In Jesus precious name, Amen.
Continual Scripture Study: 1 John 3:17-18 KJV 17 But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him? 18 My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth. http://www.turtle30cshell.com
