Daily Devotions:
by Christina Farris

Numbers 1:1-19 KJV
1 And the LORD spake unto Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tabernacle of the congregation, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they were come out of the land of Egypt, saying,
2 Take ye the sum of all the congregation of the children of Israel, after their families, by the house of their fathers, with the number of their names, every male by their polls;
3 From twenty years old and upward, all that are able to go forth to war in Israel: thou and Aaron shall number them by their armies.
4 And with you there shall be a man of every tribe; every one head of the house of his fathers.
5 And these are the names of the men that shall stand with you: of the tribe of Reuben; Elizur the son of Shedeur.
6 Of Simeon; Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai.
7 Of Judah; Nahshon the son of Amminadab.
8 Of Issachar; Nethaneel the son of Zuar.
9 Of Zebulun; Eliab the son of Helon.
10 Of the children of Joseph: of Ephraim; Elishama the son of Ammihud: of Manasseh; Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur.
11 Of Benjamin; Abidan the son of Gideoni.
12 Of Dan; Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai.
13 Of Asher; Pagiel the son of Ocran.
14 Of Gad; Eliasaph the son of Deuel.
15 Of Naphtali; Ahira the son of Enan.
16 These were the renowned of the congregation, princes of the tribes of their fathers, heads of thousands in Israel.
17 And Moses and Aaron took these men which are expressed by their names:
18 And they assembled all the congregation together on the first day of the second month, and they declared their pedigrees after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, by their polls.
19 As the LORD commanded Moses, so he numbered them in the wilderness of Sinai.

The people of God were to be Number and so the first censes was taken in scripture. How important is numbering the people. One day it was if King David woke up and said Joab is a devil that he have me count the people for they are the numberous as the stars in heaven. David's needing to know the number ended in first Chronicles 27. Why is genealogy important to silence the doubters. Maybe Joab needed a head count to satisfy a need for knowledge. Perhaps in Obedience to God since Numbers 1. The book of Numbers carries more then genealogy. Numbers carries information about the power of God and revival experience along Israel journey. Then the fall of faith with the abilty to go into the promise land is rerouted in fear of the tribe living there was greater then their fear of God. They knew of God's power, and not enough believers to enter into the land of promise. We also meet Baalam who Balak wanted him to curse Israel for him and could not. The book of Numbers also highlights some of the big events in the journey found in Exodus. The book of Numbers highlights parts of the Levitical laws and worship cermonies in the desert. Also speaks of traveling with the Tabernacle that was built and the importance of it and cermonies surrounding the Tabernacle of God.

The genealogy proves the family line of Christ going to the kingly tribe of Judea and the Levitival tribe. Important identify the Messiah. More then that it bears testimony to the word of God to every believers heart giving each and every believer both Jew and Gentile that God's is true. It is a good read and should be read, but it not this side of the cross that we live in. We live outside of legalism of worship for our hearts pray continually by the aid of the Holy Spirit as believers. The power of the Spirit comes on seventy elders in Numbers speaking of the power of the Holy Spirit to indwell more the one person. Important to the time of Christ when Jesus tells Peter the Holy Spirit must of told you who I am. Also important with the annoint or baptism on the Apostles and on others with the laying on of hands. As well as the ability if every disciple of Christ to ask God of the annointing of his Spirit from the New Testament on. That not onw believer is without God's Spirit who directs and comforts each of us.

When we get to a place in our own journey we trust God's word by his Spirit over man's word, we have come to that place of faith that there is no turning back.

Dear Heavenly Father remind us of the importance of genealogy but to rest in your first promise and not to dwell on what is visible by sight but by your word. In Jesus precious name, Amen.

Continual Scripture Study: 1 Chronicles 21:1-5 KJV
1 And Satan stood up against Israel, and provoked David to number Israel.
2 And David said to Joab and to the rulers of the people, Go, number Israel from Beersheba even to Dan; and bring the number of them to me, that I may know it.
3 And Joab answered, The LORD make his people an hundred times so many more as they be: but, my lord the king, are they not all my lord's servants? why then doth my lord require this thing? why will he be a cause of trespass to Israel?
4 Nevertheless the king's word prevailed against Joab. Wherefore Joab departed, and went throughout all Israel, and came to Jerusalem.
5 And Joab gave the sum of the number of the people unto David. And all they of Israel were a thousand thousand and an hundred thousand men that drew sword: and Judah was four hundred threescore and ten thousand men that drew sword.

2 Samuel 24:1-4 KJV
1 And again the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he moved David against them to say, Go, number Israel and Judah.
2 For the king said to Joab the captain of the host, which was with him, Go now through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan even to Beersheba, and number ye the people, that I may know the number of the people.
3 And Joab said unto the king, Now the LORD thy God add unto the people, how many soever they be, an hundredfold, and that the eyes of my lord the king may see it: but why doth my lord the king delight in this thing?
4 Notwithstanding the king's word prevailed against Joab, and against the captains of the host. And Joab and the captains of the host went out from the presence of the king, to number the people of Israel.

1 Chronicles 27:23-24 KJV
23 But David took not the number of them from twenty years old and under: because the LORD had said he would increase Israel like to the stars of the heavens.
24 Joab the son of Zeruiah began to number, but he finished not, because there fell wrath for it against Israel; neither was the number put in the account of the chronicles of king David.
