Daily Devotions: by Christina Farris2 Samuel 9:1-13 KJV
1 And David said, Is there yet any that is left of the house of Saul, that I may shew him kindness for Jonathan's sake?
2 And there was of the house of Saul a servant whose name was Ziba. And when they had called him unto David, the king said unto him, Art thou Ziba? And he said, Thy servant is he.
3 And the king said, Is there not yet any of the house of Saul, that I may shew the kindness of God unto him? And Ziba said unto the king, Jonathan hath yet a son, which is lame on his feet.
4 And the king said unto him, Where is he? And Ziba said unto the king, Behold, he is in the house of Machir, the son of Ammiel, in Lodebar.
5 Then king David sent, and fetched him out of the house of Machir, the son of Ammiel, from Lodebar.
6 Now when Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, was come unto David, he fell on his face, and did reverence. And David said, Mephibosheth. And he answered, Behold thy servant!
7 And David said unto him, Fear not: for I will surely shew thee kindness for Jonathan thy father's sake, and will restore thee all the land of Saul thy father; and thou shalt eat bread at my table continually.
8 And he bowed himself, and said, What is thy servant, that thou shouldest look upon such a dead dog as I am?
9 Then the king called to Ziba, Saul's servant, and said unto him, I have given unto thy master's son all that pertained to Saul and to all his house.
10 Thou therefore, and thy sons, and thy servants, shall till the land for him, and thou shalt bring in the fruits, that thy master's son may have food to eat: but Mephibosheth thy master's son shall eat bread alway at my table. Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants.
11 Then said Ziba unto the king, According to all that my lord the king hath commanded his servant, so shall thy servant do. As for Mephibosheth, said the king, he shall eat at my table, as one of the king's sons.
12 And Mephibosheth had a young son, whose name was Micha. And all that dwelt in the house of Ziba were servants unto Mephibosheth.
13 So Mephibosheth dwelt in Jerusalem: for he did eat continually at the king's table; and was lame on both his feet.
Son of Jonathan the grandson of Saul was made lame by the nurse carrying him who fell fleeing during wartime. Saul and Jonathan were killed and David friend of Jonathan wanted to see if there was anyone of the household he could honor. One of Saul's servants Ziba said King Saul's Jonathan's son, Mephibosheth was crippled. When reading scripture people always hear about the healing but not the process to healing for the miracle trumps the journey. Yet he was man never healed until heaven. I am assume heaven is where he went. In John 9 the man born blind was fifty years old when he got healed. During the time he begged for money. Many cripples laid in Jerusalem and Israel street as beggars. Life as not changed there still cripples out there begging on the street with a land so wealthy as ours.
The worse thing I heard concerning cripples, or disabled is the abuse that comes by people who think their is no value of life in that living soul. I do believe there are cases were disabled people should be removed from life support because there bodies ability to heal is probably not possible, it going to be all downhill with few smiles in between, if at all in these cases. Sometimes people have to let go. Yet there cases where people fought for the individual and the individual life became more then expected, more then possible because God and love of a family that never gave up. Medical team was able to do more then thought possible as well. The minute you give up on someone that became disables or are disabled is the minute you no long have the mercy of God in your life because you did not see that God could do something even with the person that was disabled. I watched a film the other day, and I asked myself would I want to live that way and the answer was no to the type of injury it was. Yet what I seen was a person determined to live his life the best to his ability. There things we understand we do not ever want to be in that position, but we do not know if we might be one day and we see this person having quality of life still within his being. That is hope that worth fighting for.
I am going blind and I talk like this. There is a point. Who are any of us to say who has quality of life. Quality of life how is it determined. King David heard about the crippled son of Jonathan and brought him into the palace and he was cared for and ate at the king's table. Over centuries disabled people have been killed because they had not been seen as viable part of society. In some places it still happens because people see no value of their existence. God's people care about disabled if they truly love God. There is always those cases we ourselves might not be able handle. Whether in wheelchair, on a bed, on the street lame, not able to go, there purpose maybe for us to be that good samaritan in scripture to care for not just the wounded man but the person in need of compasion. To ignore the disabled as if they don't hear, or can't see your attitude, or hear your response to their situation is ludricous. They hear and they see the ignoramous that do not see them as being human. We all have limits that is for sure, but those with that special ability to care beyond the normal ability is love. When a wife or husband helps their disabled partner through rough difficult and degrading moments of life that is love. Love is not abusive and love is understanding, mercy and sometimes even longsuffering. Love also understands the human reaction at times.
Many disabled working and not working in americans are feed not from the kings table but the laws of protection of our land. Sometimes only given enough to survive and without the help of others that care they never would make it. Part of being disabled is to allow someone to help you when you need help not when you can do it. As long as you able to endure and to care for yourself how much assistance do you need. When you get to the place of needing help whether in old age, physical amputations that are beyond personal care ability. The physical limitation that says I need assistance to survive, then you allow that caregiver his reward of helping you, that is often a paying job. Be kind and curtesy and appreciative of that help if you can mental do so. Caregivers also know sometimes people are ready to throw in the towel so to speak but appreciate the help as well. Dont' think the caregiver does not have those days as well.
Disabled people are not all beggars, some are in our workforce every day the workplace is open and beyond. Some work in the medical field, some still climbs roofs, some are in government, some are in every workplace imaginable as long as they are able to remain physical safety. Some jobs are just plain to dangerous for disabled to do. However most disabled really don't want that job anyway, because the average person doesn't want it either. But those type of jobs have to be done by someone.
We all struggle at the grossness of some situations, and wonder, but then we not in that position. We often do not know if we will become disabled in a way that is not in our comfort zone. No one know what they can and able to endure. Reason why I say this have mercy, talk to the disabled, take time for the disabled, show them mercy and love not abuse. King David did not owe Jonathan the care for his son for life, but he did it. Of course there was money to care for his needs by his own family and own wealth. Keep helping people that are trying work to do their job, instead of knocking them out of their job by abuse. Abuse of disabled or elderly will not enable them to work harder or even better. Disabled must fight not only the world but himself to rise every morning to go about daily to strive in life. If they working in the workforce they fighting their own condition against the inability of every job they work. They not starving you. You are staving you because you have the ability to do more in some cases if you not disabled. Go beyond your duty and care for the disabled stop making them work beyond their physical, mental and emotional ability. Most people know how to push themselves.
Mephibosheth did work, he was heir of wealth. Not everyone is that blessed. This man is blessed, This man though crippled was blessed by the generousity of David kindness. Those begging in the street do you have money to give, why not help if they are in need. What is it that they really need. Why not ask if they will work if you have a job they might be able to do. Never know what their ability might be. It often finding those jobs that are difficult, but once given chance some will take it and run with it. Bless the disabled and the able, because you do not know what the road will be down the road for yourself. Do you to be treated as you treat people with disability. Disabled might be healed or given a cure to help and the able might be disabled in a way that beyond their comprehension or scope to handle it. No one knows what life on this earth will lead too. Give them a chance and love them as God loved all of us by sending his Son and giving us love and mercy with longsuffering with the knowledge of eternal hope to those that believe in his Son.
Dear Heavenly Father, help those with disability and ability to see each others worth in positive ways to appreciate the gift of we give each other. Help us to love as you loved us. In Jesus precious name, Amen.

4 And Jonathan, Saul's son, had a son that was lame of his feet. He was five years old when the tidings came of Saul and Jonathan out of Jezreel, and his nurse took him up, and fled: and it came to pass, as she made haste to flee, that he fell, and became lame. And his name was Mephibosheth.
