Resurrection 3/22/2023
Daily Devotions: by Christina FarrisMatthew 22:23-33 KJV
23 The same day came to him the Sadducees, which say that there is no resurrection, and asked him,
24 Saying, Master, Moses said, If a man die, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.
25 Now there were with us seven brethren: and the first, when he had married a wife, deceased, and, having no issue, left his wife unto his brother:
26 Likewise the second also, and the third, unto the seventh.
27 And last of all the woman died also.
28 Therefore in the resurrection whose wife shall she be of the seven? for they all had her.
29 Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.
30 For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven.
31 But as touching the resurrection of the dead, have ye not read that which was spoken unto you by God, saying,
32 I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living. 33 And when the multitude heard this, they were astonished at his doctrine.
The resurrection, Jesus discourse with the Sadducees about the fact they do not believe in the resurrection. Yet they made a riddle concerning the resurrection of the law concerning the marrying of the one woman who lost all the brothers of one family with never baring children. In other words she married each brother and when the first brother died and then a second his obligation as a family member and religious law was to take her to be his wife. Each seven brothers likewise, until all died. The question because she had no children, whose wife would she be in the resurrection.
Do you err in knowledge of the power of God, pointing out they did not believe in the resurrection, but they believed that they were like the angels of heaven, neither married or given in marriage. Did not God say he was the God of Abraham, Isaac and the God of Jacob and I am not the God of the dead, but a God of the living. If you believe there is no resurrection but that your spirit pass on into eternity with God, then you need no resurrection. For the men and woman of faith are like the angels of heaven. What purpose is the resurrection if there be no need of resurrection. Jesus declares the resurrection is to come in more then one place, even Martha and Mary believed in the ability to see the dead brought back to life. And declared it before their brother Lazarus was brought back to life in John. Elijah also Old Testament brough a boy back to life.
What need is there of a resurrection. I do not think they denied the ability of God raising the dead, but for what purpose if they believed in eternal life was the resurrection necessary. One it be necessary to understand that God had power over the grave. That our eternity is not in the graveyard, but that our Spirit is going to eternal resting place either with God or in the fires of hell. Many of us will face death the punishment for sin, but our eternity is based on what exactly whether we have faith in Jesus. Abraham believed God and it was counted as righteousness. The wages of sin is death, the gift of God is eternity with him(Romans 6:23), but Jesus said God was and is the God of Abraham. We know Abraham was buried. That through faith we have eternal life, before the Messiah coming.
Why is important to believe. Why is faith essential to the resurrection, God is able to make our dead bones live but is it necessary. The resurrection demonstrates God's power to redeem us, it establishes the power to forgive us. It not just idle words of saying God forgives we know by the power of the resurrection, we know that the first resurrection and the second resurrection breaths eternal death. The first resurrection represents the going home to the New Jerusalem, the second resurrection represents death to all left behind. Those not risen to meet the Lord in the sky will know the power of God's redeem grace, and that their eternity is in the everlasting lake of fire, the place hell is thrown into with the devil and his angels.
The resurrection is for the benefite of the living that will face eternal death, they will know, and the dead already know they are doomed. Sounds insane if you think on it to long. To know you face death a second time is far greater to know death will now be final, final separation from God.
How many times do we have to come near death to understand this principal of our eternity. Sadducees need no resurrection because their eternity was seen going to heaven, yet that did not prevent resurrection or the need for resurrection. Resurrection to give hope to the world that God would not leave his people in the grave but they went beyond the blue horizon to their eternal resting place as a believer. It the physical reenactment of the spiritual life. Some declare the Sadducees in err of their faith, but they were correct in knowing with the knowledge of their eternal resting place. Why does God give us a physical understanding of our faith, it to bring us to a place of hope. If all we see is destruction, it preparing one to understand the need to rescue the perishing and fight the fires of hell and the grave. That one more will not face eternal torment. If one sees only happy pathway of faith, you see no need to rescue the perishing.
Online if you look you will see some of the biggest events of faith and evanglism sometimes even through music taking place, but the gospel message is being share far and wide. it bigger then any of former President Trump rallies or any politician for that matter. yet what do we see coming out of these revival experience but hopefully love and peace into the world as each born again believer is resurrected by faith into the hope of eternity to live the pathway of Christ to our Heavenly Father. There is joy and peace that should be going forth from these events. Peace of faith and hope in Christ. If it only anger and control you need to ask did you walk into freedom or are you entangled by the yoke of the laws.
If you accept Christ you are coming from death to your sin to life of hope and faith. You going forth with the message of hope. Sadducees understood the principals of eternity, but did not believe in the power of God to raise the dead, or that it was necessary. There eternity resting that they were God's chosen people, that they already had the promise of hope, that faith alone they no longer face the grave after death. Yet they still lacked in faith, because they did not believe that Christ was their Messiah. They did not accept him as their Messiah, because they had the eternal hope they believed.
Why is this important, is Jesus different from the Jewish faith? There is division here or a uniting of two groups of people? Without the resurrection faith in the Messiah would be dead, and all would turn to the Jewish faith and not move forward with Jesus. The principals of the Jewish faith still rested in Christian faith as we know it today. Yet it seems Jesus is dividing and yet he is not the divider. This teaching is hard one, to not believe in the hope of the Messiah and his coming you miss the boat. You miss the ark of safety. It a denial of the promise and hope Christ brought to man. Sadducees lack what in their faith, the knowledge of who Jesus was and is. A denial that did not believe in the power of God to perform what he said he would do right before their very eyes. A denial in God's authority, the Messiah authority and Holy Spirit authority.
When we pray do we pray with the conviction of faith and knowledge of faith knowing God's authority and power can change the life of all those around us. Prayer begins simple as child having his first prayer answered. The second prayer of faith that really moves a person is when the impossible truly occurs and it known to the individual that it took the power of God himself to move the mountain. The shakening of a mountain that never shook. The shakening of a world that forgotten the power of prayer. Revival comes whent he power of God is manifested for all to see and believe.
How many times did Moses hit the rock, twice, and it was sin, but God perform the miracle because it was only known to Moses. The crowd went wild when the water poured from the rock, when quail fell from the sky along with their manna. There hope of God not of just a God of wrath against Egypt but they seen his mercy in his provision to his people. Each generation needs their experience of God grace and power. Not just a running dialog of knowledge of God's power. If he a God of the living and Abraham is consider alive, then the power God is seen in the Messiah coming, with the healings, the calming of the storm, and even the resurrection of the dead to all. Some would still not believe. The power move of God came with the resurrection. It what would spur the disciples on in faith. It what would keep them moving forward. No they need the infilling of the Holy Spirit to keep them moving forward in faith. There are times we need to be refilled by God's Spirit, though the cup is ever flowing. It because of own feeling of unworthiness in the storm, a situation that arises, or just sin that occurs that cause us unworthy to have God flowing from our mouth or hope of faith going forth to the world. Peter had to be coached to stand up and be filled by the Spirit after his denial of Jesus. Jesus had to comfort and love on Peter for his to understand that the message had to continue to go forth across the land.
Sadducees could not see the power of God doing impossible things and yet no doubt miracles had been before them as signs and wonders. They could not believe in the impossibilites that God can perform even through his Son Jesus. Yet they believe in eternity with God. We all like Sadducees of scripture ever having faith but not in the things we understand not that he has the power over to control, to change to come forth with the impossibility. Quail and manna has never seem inviting to me, but when you hungry the menu not as important as something to eat. That the power we can understand.
Dear Heavenly Father, help us to know in our hearts the power of not only resurrection but the impossibility we understand not. Lord just give us faith we need to believe all things are possible. In Jesus precious name, Amen.
