The Prophet Amos 7/19/2023
Daily Devotions: by Christina FarrisAmos 1:1-2 KJV
1 The words of Amos, who was among the herdmen of Tekoa, which he saw concerning Israel in the days of Uzziah king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash king of Israel, two years before the earthquake.
2 And he said, The LORD will roar from Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the habitations of the shepherds shall mourn, and the top of Carmel shall wither.
Amos is a minor prophet, a herdmen of Tekoa, in the day of King Uzziah same king and time as the Prophet Isaiah. There would be a earthquake in two years from when Amos begins to prophesy. His whole prophesy is about destruction because of sin in different location around Israel. I can not imagine one neighbor liking this prophet. However I also got to say when he would not be the only prophet of his day to preach or prophesied similiar messages about lands surrounding Israel.
The prophetic call can take place in a career path other then preaching, but it not always the prophetic voice like Isaiah who seems to prophesy through out his main career as a prophet. When Joel speaks of men and women prophesying, the believers cry to the world of warning. Though they may ignore the evidence of events speak for themselves. Though word do travel quickly in large cities and no doubt shepherds did speak to each other and communicate in wide area, and it may not of been as heavy populated as the land Judah in Jerusalem. When God begins to warn his people he will send his own ministers and people to speak his word. It not a calling always of life time of prophetic words coming forth as Isaiah and Jeremiah would of been known to do, it would of been like people working in the local store, speaking God's word to those that would listen.
Before the pandemic, I heard more people speaking God's word then ever before, then it seems to be a hush in the world. Then I think maybe it the time of day I am out and about. I will never know if God was sending a warning, a testimony of light in region that still have idolatry within it. Yes the Bible belt has Idolatry in its area. It just as guilty as the next region and the next of not always being true to God. Judgments spoken in scripture applies to all regions of the world why, because all sin and fall short of the glory of God. However if God is going to move among his people they better be ready to obey the Spirit of God and speak whatever God ask them to speak. Not to try and interpret God, but to speak the words he tells them to say. It not always for our own understanding things we speak if we prophesy even a short phrase. It is the prophesy for the person that hears and knows it from God himself because the spirit is within him. If the prophesy is for a sinner God is still able to speak to the sinner heart to warn him to repent. God is a God to send his messengers forth no matter the location to warn of impeding danger, impeding warnings of the need of repentance. God is a merciful God to all that hear and repent.
Dear Heavenly Father, you speak to the heart of many, and yet your word is true to every generation. From the warning of destruction to the blessings of eternal hope. Help us to rest in your word and to trust you. In Jesus precious name, Amen.

7 Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.
8 The lion hath roared, who will not fear? the Lord GOD hath spoken, who can but prophesy?
Joel 2:11-14 KJV
11 And the LORD shall utter his voice before his army: for his camp is very great: for he is strong that executeth his word: for the day of the LORD is great and very terrible; and who can abide it?
12 Therefore also now, saith the LORD, turn ye even to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning:
13 And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the LORD your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil.
14 Who knoweth if he will return and repent, and leave a blessing behind him; even a meat offering and a drink offering unto the LORD your God?
