The Comfort Zone

Daily Devotions:
by Christina Farris

Matthew 4:18-25 KJV
18 And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.
19 And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.
20 And they straightway left their nets, and followed him.
21 And going on from thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them.
22 And they immediately left the ship and their father, and followed him.
23 And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.
24 And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatick, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them.
25 And there followed him great multitudes of people from Galilee, and from Decapolis, and from Jerusalem, and from Judaea, and from beyond Jordan.

Over the years I have learned there are many times when God calls one to serve even in times of complete obedience to him. There several different version of the call on Peter, Andrew, James and John through the Gospels. Yet something to note I do not think Peter and Andrew first contact was with them mending their nets. It was after the baptism in John. They first wanted to know where Jesus was staying. Jesus even had them take him out to sea a little ways from shore to teach, and then the call to follow came when they were working on their nets maybe a few days even later. Time frame is it different, the same story or over a period of time. We are first called to salvation. It maybe the call to hear the Gospel present, to hear the word of God, or the beginning point of hearing about Jesus. Our call to salvation maybe over time, or it might be immediately without even weighing the cost of salvation.

The disciple journey is over a period of time, how long it uncertain but Jesus beckon to them more then once, before saying come follow me. He let them follow, before he beckon them. They were on a search, and when called they came without question. When we receive Christ as Savior we are beckon by the Holy Spirit to repent. We understand that repentance and confession of faith is part of salvation. The part that Christ will give a person eternal life through faith in him. There are times we search for answers there times we just follow Jesus. In our searching we should be following Jesus, but we go looking elsewhere at times for results. We revert back to what we were doing instead of staying on track with Jesus. The disciples happy spot seem to be fishing, but it was also their chosen career. It was their comfort zone.

No clue how many days after the resurrection In John 21, we see Peter in a boat again in need of several boat loads of fish but no matter how many days, Jesus after the resurrection finds Peter out to sea fishing and with no luck of catching fish. Jesus calls to them, and Peter doesn't at first realize who it is but as the fish are being pulled up by their nets, he knew it was Jesus. He jumps off the boat and goes ashore and worships Jesus. Not his first appearance to the disciples but it is where Jesus gives his call to Peter to not only follow but to feed his sheep. The comfort zone of staying out of the ministry is simple enough, but if you called to witness to testify God going to call you even if you in your comfort zone, even in the middle of something you like doing.

Our comfort zone is often our family, friends, our work, or our play. It the place outside of what we are running from, or standing out of the way of for a time. However ministers also know in time that they land up going where they ought to go by God's Spirit even if not where they want to go to minister and to testify about Jesus. Peter was ready to preach, but he was waiting for what? I not sure but upon reaching shore he found a fire and fish cooking on the barbecue. Was It Peter's last fishing trip, I suspect not, but it was a place of removal from the current events, maybe where he could relax and mediation on things. Away from the public eye. Yet here comes Jesus and he beckons to him, it was the third time he seen Peter since the cross. Peter was in need of meat. The meat would be the call to feed the sheep. One has to read of John 21 to know this, I only included the fishing story in John 21. Open your Bible.

Do not be concerned when you convert backwards from all your excitement for a time, Sometimes you need to chill or go about daily activity to prepare mentally in the comfort for the next call from God. God is not wanting to take you from your work, your friends, and your family. He wants you to take the gospel where you are. Minister in areas you called to, and sometimes out of your comfort zone. I sure at the cross Peter was way out of his comfort zone, wonder if he was next. Seeing Jesus the days that followed in incorruptible flesh spurred on his call in his life no doubt. We do not hear of Peter fishing after the final call in John or the last chapter in Matthew sending them forth with the Great Commission of faith. It says to "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen".

God's call is not without knowing the cost of following, knowing what ministry is all about. Knowing what it be like to be in ministry. Have I minister outside my computer, I minister more then one place started teaching at 13 by my choice, no pressure from parents, if nothing maybe a little hestitant to let me teach. However God's call was when I was sixteen, and from the day of commitment in the fall of 86, my life turned upside down and inside out, and I had to learn to trust Jesus in ways I was not prepared for. There been times i convert to my comfort zone, however I began to minister online and my comfort zone is not my computer, far from me it is not, however computers intrigue me and God knows it. However my comfort zone, curling up on the couch with my husband near or beside me watching a movie, crocheting, cooking a meal, or some other mundane chore that must be done. There has been times i been called back to message board or something else. I have not message board in a long time other to reference my sight. Yet I still have those calls by God's Spirit to minister. And Cherish each moment I get to minister to others.

Dear Heavenly Father I thank you for my comfort zone, for that place that has little to do with ministry, but I thank you also for that call of ministry in my life. In Jesus precious name, Amen.

Continual Scripture Study: Matthew 28:19-20 KJV
19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

John 21:1-14 KJV
1 After these things Jesus shewed himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias; and on this wise shewed he himself.
2 There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two other of his disciples.
3 Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also go with thee. They went forth, and entered into a ship immediately; and that night they caught nothing.
4 But when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the shore: but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus.
5 Then Jesus saith unto them, Children, have ye any meat? They answered him, No.
6 And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find. They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes.
7 Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved saith unto Peter, It is the Lord. Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girt his fisher's coat unto him, (for he was naked,) and did cast himself into the sea.
8 And the other disciples came in a little ship; (for they were not far from land, but as it were two hundred cubits,) dragging the net with fishes.
9 As soon then as they were come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid thereon, and bread.
10 Jesus saith unto them, Bring of the fish which ye have now caught.
11 Simon Peter went up, and drew the net to land full of great fishes, an hundred and fifty and three: and for all there were so many, yet was not the net broken.
12 Jesus saith unto them, Come and dine. And none of the disciples durst ask him, Who art thou? knowing that it was the Lord.
13 Jesus then cometh, and taketh bread, and giveth them, and fish likewise.
14 This is now the third time that Jesus shewed himself to his disciples, after that he was risen from the dead.
