Daily Devotions:
by Christina Farris

Luke 5:1-11 KJV
1 And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret,
2 And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets.
3 And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon's, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship.
4 Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught.
5 And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net.
6 And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake.
7 And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink.
8 When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord.
9 For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken:
10 And so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men.
11 And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him.

How does Jesus begin to intercede for the disciples? He begins to be the intercessor when the needs of fish was supplied to the future disciples when their nets were found to be empty after all night of fishing. They had allowed him to sit in their boat not far from his home village in Capernaum. He set and taught the people who had followed him like fish to the water. He taught from the boat because of their were so many that just wanted to press in around him. He sat in the boat a little ways out to sea, but near enough to the shore the people could listen. When he was done, he told them to go a little further from shore and cast out their nets. The fishermen spoke about their night time fish expedition and said they had not caught a thing. He told them before he began and now after that they should push out a little further and cast out their nets. Only because Jesus said to, they went out a little further and caught a multitude of fish, so much fish their nets began to break. They told their fishing companions in another boat to come and help them. The fish in the nets filled both boats that they began to sink.

This miracle stir in Peter's heart so much he bowed to Jesus and said "I am a sinful man, depart from me". Jesus said fear not for you shalt catch men. And when they got their boat ashore they left them and followed Jesus. This is where Jesus calls his first disciples. Yet he intercedes in their need for fish. He intercedes with the fear in their heart of their unworthiness to be before him. In a modern world I can not imagine anyone bowing to Jesus this way, with all the doubt of humanity in our world we live in, I not sure if we bow over two boats of fish. Yet we might bow at his feet if our supply came in abundance in a way in which we could understand. The limitation of proficient fishermen knew their trade, knew how to look for signs of a school of fish, and yet they caught nothing all night. Not one fish and the supply of fish was meet in a way they understood, that their supply with Jesus was interceded for and they were paid for their use of their boat. Yet the supply overwhelmed Peter as he bowed before Jesus and asked him to depart because of his unworthiness to be in his presence. Jesus gave Peter a job to do, by catching men. Did Peter understand Jesus was calling him to be a minister, to go into the city, into the by ways and highways and usher the people to him. I sure their curiousity was at least peaked at his words to catch men. They followed him.

To know Jesus is going to inteceded in our well being, in our need of supply and when he does it, it will be done in a great abundance, that all we need to do is follow him. We do not know if those left behind that day could handle the load of fish, but I am sure none was wasted. For the crowd perhaps were still upon the shore in need of a meal. I don't know for certain what happen to the fish. Perhaps they all jump back into the water. However whatever happened, Peter and his men were shaken to the core of what they witness, and what they heard, that they followed Jesus.

Our need for intercessor in our life is great, our need for supply by his will is great. Is it easier to follow when the need is meet not when one is in the wilderness begging for bread. Sometimes they way God supplies does not make sense to anyone. Then the light comes on and we realize Jesus calling his disciples by the signs and wonders he is performing in their mist. To know this is time to heed to the call of faith. In the wilderness Israelites were hungry and tired from the journey and grumbled against Moses for bread, not God. Yet God demonstrated his power through Moses and manna came the next morning with rules to follow so it would be okay to eat. God was teaching them about obedience and about provision with obedience. Those that disobeyed found themselves without a meal and nasty mess to clean up. Hear Jesus only had to supply for the disciples to want to follow him. Some of us come by the law, some by miracles wonders, signs, and some with just a simple call to follow him. Children of Israel came with understanding of obedience to faith in God, Peter, John and James followed Jesus with signs that were supplied to them. They no longer question who he was. They knew he was holy and they were unworthy to be in his presence. The children of Israel did not see Moses call of holiness in his life until the glory of the Lord shone in his face and they asked him to wear a vail. Mose unequal to Jesus in his power to move the children Israel into submission to God despite the many miracles from his hand. It would take the obedience of the law, the understanding of faith and that they could seek God with the help of intercessor. We all come Christ when we understand that we break the word of God in disobedience to him. When we understand our sin is costing our relationship to God, that we unworthy to be in his presence or even his son's presence. In our unworthiness Jesus says come take up your cross and follow me.

Dear Heavenly Father as we submit to Christ to follow in his footsteps, to know you called us to be humble in your presence, and called to follow in your grace. In Jesus precious name, Amen.

Continual Scripture Study: Exodus 16:11-15 KJV
11 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
12 I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel: speak unto them, saying, At even ye shall eat flesh, and in the morning ye shall be filled with bread; and ye shall know that I am the LORD your God.
13 And it came to pass, that at even the quails came up, and covered the camp: and in the morning the dew lay round about the host.
14 And when the dew that lay was gone up, behold, upon the face of the wilderness there lay a small round thing, as small as the hoar frost on the ground.
15 And when the children of Israel saw it, they said one to another, It is manna: for they wist not what it was. And Moses said unto them, This is the bread which the LORD hath given you to eat.
