Opposition Continues 2/07/2023
Daily Devotions: by Christina FarrisJohn 7:1-25 KJV
1 After these things Jesus walked in Galilee: for he would not walk in Jewry, because the Jews sought to kill him.
2 Now the Jews' feast of tabernacles was at hand.
3 His brethren therefore said unto him, Depart hence, and go into Judaea, that thy disciples also may see the works that thou doest.
4 For there is no man that doeth any thing in secret, and he himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou do these things, shew thyself to the world.
5 For neither did his brethren believe in him.
6 Then Jesus said unto them, My time is not yet come: but your time is alway ready.
7 The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil.
8 Go ye up unto this feast: I go not up yet unto this feast; for my time is not yet full come.
9 When he had said these words unto them, he abode still in Galilee.
10 But when his brethren were gone up, then went he also up unto the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret.
11 Then the Jews sought him at the feast, and said, Where is he?
12 And there was much murmuring among the people concerning him: for some said, He is a good man: others said, Nay; but he deceiveth the people.
13 Howbeit no man spake openly of him for fear of the Jews.
14 Now about the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and taught.
15 And the Jews marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned?
16 Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.
17 If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.
18 He that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.
19 Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law? Why go ye about to kill me?
20 The people answered and said, Thou hast a devil: who goeth about to kill thee?
21 Jesus answered and said unto them, I have done one work, and ye all marvel.
22 Moses therefore gave unto you circumcision; (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers;) and ye on the sabbath day circumcise a man.
23 If a man on the sabbath day receive circumcision, that the law of Moses should not be broken; are ye angry at me, because I have made a man every whit whole on the sabbath day?
24 Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.
25 Then said some of them of Jerusalem, Is not this he, whom they seek to kill?
The term jewry is a translation word and not a different word for Judea. Translator used it instead of Judea. It it stuck even in King James Version of the Bible. There are several words that unless you look them up you never know the origin is just translation word and not necessarily a word that the Jews used differently. Three language of the orignal text of scripture is Hebrew, Greek and Aramic. When we understand that it then was translated into latin and other languages it makes it easy to understand how this occurs. Enough of the language lesson. There were people seeking to kill Jesus in Judea. Yet he will still is going to the feast. HIs brethren did not believe who Jesus was either. People of Nazareth, Galilee and so forth. Jesus was living in a time of danger and persecution. Jesus shows no fear but after the feast has started Jesus then goes to Jerusalem and teaches in the temple. He does so in secret but in reality how secret is Jesus really being if he is teaching in the temple. All would see him, despite he was staying away from those who wish to harm him. Yet when they are in the crowd the still coming with anger despite his ability to teach so eloquently to the people. How could he teach he was not educated man they wonder. Jesus explained it pretty much in language they understood he still declaring God has his Father, but let us not get ahead, for todays lesson deals with some of Jesus response to those who wanted to seek his life. He said did not Moses teach not to kill, but you seek to kill me? It is true and yet Moses taught circumcision in the temple to circumcise a man on the Sabbath. Circumcision of the heart not literal physical circumcision, but circumcision of the spiritual life and yet they did not rebuke the elders when they would teach scripture that would correct the heart.
Now who are the jews going to go with Jesus or their elders who desire to kill him. If a parent tells a child something about an issue who does the child believe whether it is a lie or not, government and schools will never convince a child differently. What is interesting schools have not changed in many ways and yet it is ever evolving to improve on their tactics with each generation of students to teach and to educate a person to think freely. Now even if a child has a best friend they might believe them but obey their parents. They may hear their friend but not necessarily know if what their friend says is true. Jews relied on their leaders to be truthful about the situation concerning Jesus. Many Jews would walk away from the obvious truth of who Jesus was and is. With this understanding we see Peter a Jew following Christ, and the other disciples. Conflict coming from the elders in the temple. Coming from the religious council as far has who Christ was. They would not declare him as the Messiah despite the virgin birth or the testimony of John the Baptist conception and birth. A constant struggle warring with the opposition to those who would listen. God was hardening the hearts because of change coming. Before the Ten Commandments the exile from Egypt occur and the wrath of God played out. In the New Testament the denial coming of from God's people but the punishment coming to his Son this time instead of the people at the present time. He would pay for their sin of unbelief. Many Jews would repent after the resurrection, but some would still doubt and study scriptures seeking truth. Israel was already in exile, their Pharaoh was Rome, but Rome was not evil to them in regards to allowing them their God and their Temple. God would reach Rome and the Roman leaders would become Christians. but it was the scattering of both Jews and Christians before God would reach Rome. Paul would take the Gospel to Rome first, but his king would not be the one to get saved. It would be another king.
God was laying his Son's life down for us to be saved. Yet he pick up his Son's life on the third day, proving his power to not only save, but his power that his word was not going away. When the Jews were seeking in their heart to kill Jesus they had to deal with the law Jesus spoke to them about, yet this would not turn their hearts away desiring for Jesus to be dead, despite his miracles and teachings.
Before any believers salvation there is a struggle in the heart about who Jesus is, whether he can save a person upon repentance and so forth. There is internal struggle that wrestles with the word of God. Yet when the truth is received it brings forth repentance unto salvation. These Jews could not receive for they received not Jesus' words as truth, despite the knowledge of the laws of Moses. A person can be that hard headed not to think for themselves or to think for themselves and decide to follow Jesus. Decide to believe and receive Jesus as Lord and Savior. Defining time being at the heart of the individual, the place God wants to circumcise your heart and welcome you as believer in him. He welcomes us into his family when we allow his Spirit into our hearts. When we open the door wide to his Son.
Dear Heavenly Father, help us to trust your word and yoru Son's word over all other words in our life. Help us to obey upon hearing your word despite man's unbelief or council. Lead us in the path by your word. In Jesus precious name, Amen. Continual Scripture Study: Ephesians 1:12-13 KJV
12 That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ.
13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,
