What Would You Do If God Asked You? Lesson 4 8/04/2023
Daily Devotions: by Christina Farris
Matthew 14:22-33 KJV
22 And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.
23 And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone.
24 But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary.
25 And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea.
26 And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear.
27 But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.
28 And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.
29 And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.
30 But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.
31 And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?
32 And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased.
33 Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.
Jesus divinity often comes in question when you see the words Son of God in scripture. At this point they understand not who Christ is fully. At this point Jesus is Messiah to the disciples, but at this point his true full divinity is not seen or perhaps revealed. We see Christ only as Son, and Lord of all in scripture through out the Gospels. To understand Jesus is sent from God created by his word is enough to understand he is unique, not when we compare our ownselves as only being human and yet with a call of God on each of our lives. The separation of Man from being equal to Jesus must come with understand his position is far above ours in God's kingdom. Far above even the Priesthood of the Jewish Temple.
Jesus divinity is seen when the disciples see him walk on water, where the ship is being tossed because of the waves and the wind was contrary. Is it possible he walked on stones as some theorist want to believe, will we have to get to the picture to understand the boat was in the midst of the sea, not close to shore, so the water was to deep for there to be stones for man to walk on. They thought Jesus was a Spirit, until he spoke to them not to be afraid. Peter said bid me to come out to thee to Jesus. Jesus said come, and Peter came down out of the ship and walked on the water and then he became afraid and began to sink. Peter cried Jesus save me.
Now we never think about this story this way, but I imagine Peter climbing out onto the water with excitement only to grasp his reality, that he was really walking on water. Then the waves scared him. and he began to sink. Now as a child one of my favorite things was to play on the monkey bars. I was still little enough the drop down seem like a very big drop. One day I had by myself got myself stuck halfway the monkey bars and then looked down. No one was around. I began to scream, becasue I was afraid I would fall. However the monkey bars are meant for you to be able to drop down onto the ground. I was terrified to do so. The joy of getting half way across the monkey bars short lived, because the fear of falling was greater. If I fallen I would not have hurt myself. Yet my fear of the big obstacle of letting go was greater then my joy.
Peter in his joy lost his joy with the sight of the storm. Lost his exuberants of look I am walking on top of the water. Jesus lifted him up and said ye of little faith. Why did you doubt? The question is why would anyone start out trusting God and often fail to keep one's focus on the one that enabled them. It simple. We play follow the leader in life, and are taught many things, but if we do not catch the ball we sink, we fall, and we fail. If we catch the ball we are able to manage what people may toss our way and throw at us. We become the master of our own ability not inability. When we trust Jesus our focus must remain on Jesus. To not focus on him means we going to fail. When we run the race of faith we must keep focused on Jesus.
Our fears in life must come second to our focus. People that learn to walk a tightrope must learn to look ahead and not down less they fall because of fear. They learn to feel the rope with their feet not their eyes. One must stay focus straight ahead to learn to walk on a tightrope. I can remember trying to cross a huge log going across a creek. I can swim, but the fear of falling was greater then my need to cross the creek. As long as I had someone to hold my hand I could cross it. The log wide enough for both feet to be on it at the same time. Do not put me up in a skyscaper with only steel bars going across I would probably die. Seeing pictures of men eating lunch on these rails, I have to ask how do they do that so comfortably.
There many things many of us are scared to do, even trusting Jesus. Why is trusting Jesus scary? The reason one becomes scared is because what we are required by Jesus to do is going against the grain of our own comprehension. it not normal for man to walk on water. It is not normal to leave your possession behind and go into the world and be a witness for Jesus, and never have to worry about a place to sleep and a place to eat. Those things are not normal. Yet even unbelievers do it and they find food. To trust Jesus to provide to be ready to go into the wilderness of faith is not what most people trust in to survive in this world. Common sense seems to go out the door when trusting Jesus. One can not define trusting Jesus as always being a rational decision. After all Peter began to walk in water tell he look around and fear grabbed a hold of him. and he was a sailor and no doubt he would of known how to swim.
When the reality of the impossible meets you face to face, then the reality is a testimony of Jesus ability to perform to enable a believer to do the impossible by his command. Peter for one did not think it was possible for him to walk on water, but really wanted to try to walk on water, but not unless Jesus said it was okay, Peter's fear started with his faith. He believed it was possible but had not the faith to keep focus on Jesus because in the world he grew up in it was impossible to do what he was doing and that was walking on water.
When reality meets God we will fall on our knees and worship him. When we realize who Jesus is, we will worship him. When we receive the Holy Spirit and God's Spirit begins to teach and instruct you, the reality takes on a new meaning. it means what we thought impossible is now possible by the will of God not by our will mind you, but God's will. I can go to the creek and say Lord let me cross the river on foot, and expect my feet not to get wet or my head for that matter. Or can I? I most likely can not walk on water, but if God wanted to enable me, I think I be praising God before the second step was taken.
Are we thank God in the mist of his proving his power in our life, Are we thanking Jesus for enabling the impossible possible, when it happens. Why pray if you do not believe God can do it. Why pray if you are not willing to receive his answer. I asked God to move a mountain in my life and to show me where the mountain was. The next day there was an earthquake. I understood it not, but I knew not to go that direction. When God red flags you in one direction you better go the opposite way. Even if you do not understand it.
Recognize Christ ability to move mountains, to enable one to walk across the water, just remember where your focus needs to be. It not in our power that mountains are moved, it not in Peter's power to walk on water. It is in Jesus power. His power equal to our Heavenly Father(God). Why doubt what Jesus says you can do, why doubt what he instructs us to do. Why are we putting up barriers to block ourselves if we are able to do what God has call us to do. Peter barrier came with fear. Peter barrier came the minute he wonder if he could walk on water. Where is your faith?
Dear Heavenly Father, help us not to fear what you call us to do, nor be fearful of what we think we can do by your power and might and not our own. Give our faith strength, especially when barriers, waves and so forth become possible stumbling blocks in our faith. Help us to keep focus on Jesus. In Jesus precious name, Amen.
