Carry A Sword

Daily Devotions:
by Christina Farris

Galatians 5:13-26 KJV
13 For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.
14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
15 But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another.
16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.
18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. 19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.
25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
26 Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.

What is liberty in faith. It is not power over anyone, but power over one's decisions to believe God knows best and your desire is to follow his pathway of peace. To follow in loving one another. Love is not violent, love is not hate. One can hate what a person does to them, and still demonstrate love to the person. There are plenty of people I hate their actions, but I will love them as brother or sister loves each other in the since of caring for their well being, unless they cause me harm to the point I have to retaliate. Is that Christian? Depends on where you live what country and state. What it means is you choose not to fight unless pressed to do so, because you are not a door mat. However you need to check and see if you are obedient to the countries constitution, laws and so forth. If that in check then you are in no violation, but someone may be violating your rights and you have a right to defend yourself with whatever means necessary, but never make the first hit, or shoot the first bullet unless they in your house. I do not believe you should be a wimp, if you have the means to fight. But do not fight to just to pick, bully or harm a person. I do not believe in eye for eye and tooth for a tooth. Pick your battles wisely. Do not fight if you know the person is mental, and only needs help and even correction. Do not fight if you know the person is reacting to a bad situation. Do not fight just to win, sometimes some battles are not even worth your time of day to straighten out the problem. Be responsible with your own actions. But don't let people abuse you, you are human and have rights too. Even Christ said to his disciples to carried a sword.

When do you fight when the first smack or the second smack. How many times to turn the other cheek. It depends on the situation. Sometimes taking a blow is better then retaliation. Sometimes being knock down is better then drawing a weapon of war. Sometimes allowing the person to know you not going to stoop to their level, is sometimes better then fighting. There time to take a beating and time to fight. There time to play dead and time to stand your ground until the enemy runs in the other direction. Cast the devil right out of the room. There are people you want to work with by human nature and their others you wonder how you get through the day staying in just one work zone. Yet you never cause harm. Why because to love is greater then violence, everytime. Communication is better then war. Working through differences and saying is this a place we can disagree and still work together. The problem being some want fighting and war only, and not peace.

When I begin to apply the fruits of the Spirit, I think of Jesus calling the Pharisees viper, telling the disciples to carry a sword, and then his compassion daily with those who crowded in around him, those that touch him without his consent, and those who cried out for him to touch them for healing. He went to his cross because of one act of cleansing the temple that caused a death, not by his hand but the hand Barabbas. How does one prove it, by looking up the name Barabbas for information about who he was in the Bible dictionaries downloaded.

The whole time Christ ministry Jesus was peaceful, except for turning over the money changers tables in the temple. This event happened twice. Early in ministry and then the week before his death. What we see is a Savior that obey God, taking on the burden of human law and the took on the battle of religious laws, and then died for both you and me. Saying Father forgive them they know not what they do. Conflict of faith and law is often a battle, but it became great because there were things done against God the Father. When you stand for faith you should be able to do it by the fruits of the Spirit. To love, to be longsuffering, gentleness, kindness, Meekness, temperance, against such things there is no law.

There is a law for all things concerning the flesh in these passages that involve criminal action, some things are not criminal by law in our world today, but is against one's family, spouse, or someone else's spouse or even future spouse. Sexual immortally is in vogue on the world today, but drunkness can cause a wreck, or harm in violence, along with wild partying. Many things going against even the world today. As a Christian we have a responsibility to keep ourselves out of trouble with all laws. We have a responsibility to not take the law into one's own hands. We have a responsibility to observe legal laws and laws of faith.

When I saying defend yourself, your are probably in a situation you have no choice but to do so. Nothing wrong with learning skills to defend yourself, or even carrying legal weapons, but when you do, you take responsibility to any action in using your fist, a weapon, or anything else in defense. Do not pick a fight, do not start in thing that needs to be handled without love. Choose peace and not war. Remember Peter cut off the soldier's ear, but Jesus touch his ear and healed it. Not to smart of action on Peter's part, fortunately Peter did not land up in hand cuffs facing the court as well.

God's grace and man's defense. God's laws and Man's law. Israel lived by traditon of the their laws because they seen them as God's laws, not understanding the laws of faith was about belief, like at the time of Abraham. We live in a world not of God so the law of faith applied to belief and allowing God's Spirit to produce fruit of of the Spirit in our life. Not being called to violence, or criminal action. Not called to living a life style of disgrace in how we treat others, but to love one another in peace and tolerance.

Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for your Spirit of love and not violence and hate, There many things we do hate, we hate evil as you hate evil. Help us to love people as you love them as well. In Jesus precious name, Amen.

Matthew 26:51-52 KJV
51 And, behold, one of them which were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck a servant of the high priest's, and smote off his ear.
