The Metaphor Of Light

Daily Devotions:
by Christina Farris

Genesis 1:13-19 KJV
13 And the evening and the morning were the third day.
14 And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:
15 And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.
16 And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.
17 And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,
18 And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.
19 And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.

Second day God divided the fermanent from the the water. Third Day God made seeds to spring forth vegetation and fruit. Then posted we get to the fourth day and God made two lights to rule one in the night the other in the day. The lesser light was the one of the night and the one of the day was a greater lighter. Stars were to help the lesser light. Christ is the daystar, known as the Sun. The Moon being the Holy Spirit. Shining in the darkness of our heart, shining in the darkness of the night to enable one to believe in God the Father. The stars are the ministers of faith, with no power, beyond what God gives in the darkness of the world and reflects the light of God. Make sure you read all the continual scripture verses, or you going to get lost with this.

One can get lost very easy with metaphors in scripture. It easy to assume that a reference to God will continue in scripture but it does not always reflect this. The reference of Sun and Moon is described in a dream as powers over Joseph at the time of his life as he lived with his father and mother, and his brothers being the stars. His Father assume his light and his mother light being the Sun and Moon bowing. In reality it was the light of Egypt authority and his Father plus his siblings that would be bowing to Joseph. Yet there was one more Son born and his star was counted in the dream his name was Benjamin.

Why is any of this important you might ask? To know and examine scripture whether it truly about God and his power or about man. God's power created light in the darkness, but also created two lights one visible and other not so visible. Sun and Moon in Genesis creation story was a reference to the actual moon and stars in relationship to months, weeks, days and even years. What does this mean. It means God illustration of his handiwork maybe be being used in other books to describe something totally different then creation story. It is a metaphor to explain spirituality. Now with this in mind does Christ rule our hearts before salvation, and does the Holy Spirit rule our hearts before salvation. If the answer is no then who is ruling our hearts but the devil, self, or not determine yet in a child perhaps determined in adult by actions. one might call a evil child a real hellion, or a goody two shoes a real angel. Yet these two children exist whether by choice they obeying evil or light, some might ask do they understand it. At six/seven I understood my decision to follow Jesus had to do with good and to follow Satan was evil. Two forces sitting on my shoulder as Disney explains it maybe a little better in his cartoons, of devil and angel on the shoulder trying to get Goofy to either sin or be good. The metafore not lost to a child. The concept simple enough. Yet the consequences for our action would determine what path we chose.

Beware of how moon and stars, and day star is used in scripture. Jesus is called the daystar by Peter. I wonder when did man understand the Sun was a star, I am not sure. When I think of day star I think of the Sun/Son. Sun not literally being Christ, but a metaphor of his light and power. Moon referencing the Holy Spirit, because whether the Son/and God's word is shining, actions, attitudes are seen in the night to be either good or evil. Let take a bit further and say Cain heard the Holy Spirit warning him before he killed Abel. Holy Spirit is said to speak to man's heart. To warn, to prepare for salvation, and be the convictor of the human heart. Yet the Holy Spirit knowledge is not known to those in the dark, yet his light is seen clearly, though perhaps not so brillantly understood to a darken world. God is the one that will give the increase by his Spirit because it through the lights he gives to man that convicts the heart, either the word or spirit of God shines in the heart of man to receive the truth that once before was hidden to the individual.

We can understand God just a little, we can understand he did not leave even Adam and Eve in darkness of the earth, but shine in their hearts that even Eve praise the Lord for the birth of her first born. Knowledge something we understand as flipping through scripture lining it up with other knowledge to make one picture very clear God loved us and never tended to leave us in the dark. When we teach our children from the womb to adulthood the truth of God's word, there is a brilliant light of Christ to lead them right into faith, but it still their choice. Rebellion is part of teenage years, apart of even young adulthood. It a part of growing up and learning the difference of living right and living wrong. The difference of faith and not having faith. To believe and not to believe, the importance of faith in God(Father, Son and Holy Spirit). To believe just in the seeable work of God, not just the light hidden in the heart of soul of individual that changes that heart to being a minister/servant/royalty offspring of God.

When you see someone using metaphors ask how is it being used, how should it be applied in relationship to God's power and sovereignty. If it lines not up with scripture, then ask again am I missing a piece of the picture being described. God starts with a shell of person, outside the light and darkness of faith beckons, the inner man is struggling with the choice of free will. Very clear image that God beckoning is only part of the salvation experience through his Son. God wants to hand you Jesus, Want you to receive him as Lord. He allowing the choice despite his effort to convict, he leaves the choice to being yours. Only a few people were not given a choice, John Baptist being one who was filled with the Holy Spirit in his mother's womb and Christ being His Son. David anointed with the HOly Spirit, his choice was before his anointing. Saul chose made by his desire for power and control and not submission to God. God leaving Saul Soul because of his choice of power.

For those that wonder about yesterday lesson I hope this helps out a lot. Metaphor is used often even in scripture. Though the cross reference of scripture made aid in understanding you can lose by not evaluating it as such, meaning a metaphor.

Dear Heavenly Father, you give us two lights to see your light by, your Son and your Spirit. You give us knowledge of these two lights. and yet your light shines forth in day and the night through these two sources. Open our hearts to see your light, that draws us to you. In Jesus precious name, Amen.

Continual Scripture Study: 2 Corinthians 4:6 KJV
6 For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

Genesis 37:9-10 KJV
9 And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamed a dream more; and, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars made obeisance to me.
10 And he told it to his father, and to his brethren: and his father rebuked him, and said unto him, What is this dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth?

2 Peter 1:17-21 KJV
17 For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
18 And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount.
19 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:
20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.
21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

Revelation 1:16-20 KJV
16 And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword: and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength.
17 And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last:
18 I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.
19 Write the things which thou hast seen, and the things which are, and the things which shall be hereafter;
20 The mystery of the seven stars which thou sawest in my right hand, and the seven golden candlesticks. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches.

1 Corinthians 3:6-7 KJV
6 I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.
7 So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase.

John 12:30-32 KJV
30 Jesus answered and said, This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes.
31 Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.
32 And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.
