The Toils And Faith

Daily Devotions:
by Christina Farris

Genesis 5:28-32 KJV
28 And Lamech lived an hundred eighty and two years, and begat a son:
29 And he called his name Noah, saying, This same shall comfort us concerning our work and toil of our hands, because of the ground which the LORD hath cursed.
30 And Lamech lived after he begat Noah five hundred ninety and five years, and begat sons and daughters:
31 And all the days of Lamech were seven hundred seventy and seven years: and he died.
32 And Noah was five hundred years old: and Noah begat Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

Noah came from the line of Seth. There are two Lamech in scripture in Genesis, knowledge of this is important because Lamech in Genesis four was cursed because he killed a man. Lamech from the line of Seth said "the ground which Lord has cursed", concering the work and toil of his hands. His sin from begining of his ancestry from the time period of Adam and Eve who were parents of Seth, the family line he came from. He recognizing the original curse of man, but also recognized the blessing of God of having a son. A farmer by trade apparently or a garden at the minimum for livilihood. Whether he did other things before Noah began to build the ark is unclear. However He was almost six hundred years old when he had Noah and he live to be seven hundred and seventy seven years old. Noah was 600 years old when he went into the ark. Over three hundred thirty years before the flood he died. Never seeing his grandchildren. For Noah had his children after five hundred years of age, The flood came at age six hundred. Orignal sin seen and understood by Lamech. The blessing from God of an offspring to help in the toil and labor of his hands. Lamech at five hundred had someone to help him in his labor.

Now you and I know the ages seem impossible, some believe it to be a time frame of family and change in leadership of family, however Bible is clear on the generations being offspring of each man here. Was age calculated the same way it is today, probably not, but even so the stars and moon would of told time frame along with seasons of growing. Most of us can calculate time frame in our life by different events that happened. Markers in memory so to speak. The flood maybe the biggest marker for Noah, next to the birth of his children. For Lamech, when God chose to bless him was his marker of his eldest son, and the children that came after, to aid in his labor.

We all have to work in life. Some as care givers, some working out in the world like little busy ants all going in different directions to business and different occupations. Ants only having one occupation hunting and gathering of food(taking food back to the nest). People they go to work, bring back hopefully honest day wage. Job in scripture even felt cursed by God because the fruit of his hands was taken, the labor of his love gone and the life he once had disappeared with destruction. Yet Job would be blessed once more.

No one can keep a hard worker down. I will say it depends on health, but then also say God restores that. Job did have boils on his feet, during his time of trial. Lamech felt his trial had to do with the curse of the ground. His child bearing years maybe even gone in his thinking, and God blessed him and his wife, his orignal wife or a second wife we do not know. We can assume not emaculent conception, or a conception like his future granddaugther Sarah and grandson Abraham.

Man's orignal sin gave future generations trial of faith and the blessings of God. With God's curse of the earth, came blessings of fruit with hard work. The need to turn the soil or plow/till the soil to plant the seeds. To cultivate in order to produce abundance of crops. God uses worms to turn the soil along with other critters in his planting. But man had to do his own work in the process for it to be fruitful. Why, perhaps giving man the realization of all of God's provision in life early on in history. The production of the fruit from trees already planted and growing, along with herbs patches in woody areas, as well as open fields. Perhaps to teach man the process incase of areas where worms are not in abundance to help in aiding the process. Theory? Not really, for worms were not only turning the soil, but it helps in fertilization process as well as irrigation of the soil. Though plants can grow without earthworms, it just means healthier soil for plants to grow. I often felt that my own land had not a lot of earthworms and may be cause by poor gardening. Whether that is the cause I have no definite clue. I am not a farmer by trade that is for sure, but I have grown fruits and vegetables.

However I do know it takes a lot for a seed to actually begin to grow once planted. For not all seeds mature. Take and cultivate seeds inside the house and have a pretty good production of seeds. Yet not all plants will make it once transplanted outside. If they do make it, the elements from air, to soil to the right amount of rain produced good plants, along with the soil it rested in.

Labor of Lamech, had reach a point he needed God's blessing perhaps. Truth much we will never know of this time period, but we can only imagine what it meant to have a son, who could aid him in his work. In the toil and labor of his hands. It was a true blessing. When God blesses you with help remember it is a blessing from God. A sign of righteousness through faith, recognizing God's blessings.

Daniel a righteous man by faith could not save anyone but himself by his faith. His faith was a testimony to unbelievers, especially the king Nebuchanezzar. Daniel in his diversity used his faith to testify what God required of him as a believer, thus he got food that was right for him and not the meat of the king. He also almost lost his life because he was tossed to lions, but God's angels shut the mouths of the lions.

Lamech, Noah, Job and Daniel all had faith in common. Yet their struggle different from each other. Lamech came from orignal sin, Noah storm came from the current state of man's relationship to God, and Daniel struggle though came from the sins of Israel orignally, it did not change his status of faith, or the fact that those around him sought to destroy him becaue of his faith. The guilt of man causing them to torment those of faith. Not knowing the promise is for them if they just turn to God and repent of sin, believing in Christ, first form of Christ being the word, and Christ coming in the flesh for us to see and believe in the physical hope of salvation from God.

In order to get to the gospel message today, one has to recognize the word in person throught he word of God, not yet in the flesh. Yet the saving grace of his word was spoken to Noah who obeyed, to Job who repented and Daniel who was lifted out of the den of lions, because of his faithfulness to God despite what man would do to him. He stood his ground, despite what was coming for doing so. His storm, maybe the moment he was dropped in the pit, and relief when he seen the angels had shut their mouths. I would like to think Daniel felt no fear that the Holy Spirit was thick around him as he was toss in the pit below him, but scripture does not speak whether there was any physical fear in Daniel trial. Noah story tells no words if he was even a bit fearful as the rain continue pouring down and he was safe inside the ark and heard the screams of the people. Job, we hear all his argument with God only for Job to come to realize why should he not expect hardship, he truly was not God and God's power to vast even for his complete knowledge.

If God is going to allow a believer hardship he going to give him a way of escape, either out of this earth, or while on the earth. We just must keep focus on God during the storm and trial of our faith. God is the God of all comfort, but he puts us through trials to enable to help others that are going through similiar things that do not even know him. If what you feel your going through, look at it as a learning curve as well a testimony of faith is going to follow. Are you standing in faith in Christ today, or just hoping for relief? Think on it.

Dear Heavenly Father, help us in our faith to understand we are worthy of hardship, but also your blessings. That are hardship is to educate us, and to enable us to help someone else through hard times that need you. Help us to be a testimony of your love and to be blessing in someone else trial of faith. In Jesus precious name, Amen.

Continual Scripture Study: Ezekiel 14:20 KJV
20 Though Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it, as I live, saith the Lord GOD, they shall deliver neither son nor daughter; they shall but deliver their own souls by their righteousness.

2 Corinthians 1:3-6 KJV
3 Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort;
4 Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.
5 For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ.
6 And whether we be afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effectual in the enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer: or whether we be comforted, it is for your consolation and salvation.
