God Or Mammon 08/06/2022
Daily Devotions: by Christina FarrisNumbers 22:1-20 KJV
1 And the children of Israel set forward, and pitched in the plains of Moab on this side Jordan by Jericho.
2 And Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites.
3 And Moab was sore afraid of the people, because they were many: and Moab was distressed because of the children of Israel.
4 And Moab said unto the elders of Midian, Now shall this company lick up all that are round about us, as the ox licketh up the grass of the field. And Balak the son of Zippor was king of the Moabites at that time.
5 He sent messengers therefore unto Balaam the son of Beor to Pethor, which is by the river of the land of the children of his people, to call him, saying, Behold, there is a people come out from Egypt: behold, they cover the face of the earth, and they abide over against me:
6 Come now therefore, I pray thee, curse me this people; for they are too mighty for me: peradventure I shall prevail, that we may smite them, and that I may drive them out of the land: for I wot that he whom thou blessest is blessed, and he whom thou cursest is cursed.
7 And the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed with the rewards of divination in their hand; and they came unto Balaam, and spake unto him the words of Balak.
8 And he said unto them, Lodge here this night, and I will bring you word again, as the LORD shall speak unto me: and the princes of Moab abode with Balaam.
9 And God came unto Balaam, and said, What men are these with thee? 10 And Balaam said unto God, Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, hath sent unto me, saying,
11 Behold, there is a people come out of Egypt, which covereth the face of the earth: come now, curse me them; peradventure I shall be able to overcome them, and drive them out.
12 And God said unto Balaam, Thou shalt not go with them; thou shalt not curse the people: for they are blessed.
13 And Balaam rose up in the morning, and said unto the princes of Balak, Get you into your land: for the LORD refuseth to give me leave to go with you.
14 And the princes of Moab rose up, and they went unto Balak, and said, Balaam refuseth to come with us.
15 And Balak sent yet again princes, more, and more honourable than they.
16 And they came to Balaam, and said to him, Thus saith Balak the son of Zippor, Let nothing, I pray thee, hinder thee from coming unto me:
17 For I will promote thee unto very great honour, and I will do whatsoever thou sayest unto me: come therefore, I pray thee, curse me this people.
18 And Balaam answered and said unto the servants of Balak, If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the word of the LORD my God, to do less or more.
19 Now therefore, I pray you, tarry ye also here this night, that I may know what the LORD will say unto me more.
20 And God came unto Balaam at night, and said unto him, If the men come to call thee, rise up, and go with them; but yet the word which I shall say unto thee, that shalt thou do.
The hinderence of God in the lives of prophets. A prophet might serve a fearful leader, but he can not stop God from hindering his ability to perform anything against his people that a evil king has asked him to do. God has declare his protection from such attempts on his people. Does that mean there times God does not stop evil from occuring the answer is yes. Evil acts of persecution of the christians, and Jews have happened for centuries. Yet this is one story evil act was not going to happen to the Hebrew/Israelite/Jews people. Balak had sent filthy lucred/money for divination to Balaam to curse Israel.
Let's ask why are God's people not going to be cursed. One they are going to the promise land. God ordination of Israel/Hebrew/Jews return to the promise land. If you are in the will of God no curse is going to disable you from doing the will of God. However it maybe God's will for christian to be crucified and if that the case God going to show his power before the crucifixion happens. Meaning God's allowance of evil upon his people. That can be in God's will too. Does it sound confusing, not really, when you understand his people will one day rise again. Christ arose on the third day after death by the hands of man, but God allowed it. God demonstrats to his enemy his power to stop, and prevent by his power and authority. Now this whole chapter must be presented to prove this analogy. Yet in these short devotion.
Balaam the prophet of God send word to King Balak he can not curse these people. Balak was in fear of Israel because of their number and size of their people and they were travel right near King Balak territory. Balak request Baalam come curse Israel, but God intervenes by speaking to Balaam. First time he was told not to go, so he tells the king he can not come because he can not curse the Israelites. Balaam was probably from the tribe of Edom, who would of been an ancestor of Esau, Jacob's brother. The interaction between tribes may or may not be important depending who you ask, but I am including it for information why the King Balak asked a God fearing prophet to curse Israel. Esau sold his birthright to Jacob for a bowl of soup and his name became Edom because of it. Reflecting he had a curse life by his rejection of his birthright, though he tried to get it back once the realization of what he lost. Though Esau was prosperous because of his labor, this small friction could effect brothers, though it never seem to until this time in history. King Balak sent for Balaam again. God told Balaam to go with the men but not to curse Israel to only say what he speaks to him.
Two days ago I made an error on August Fourth and said Cain followed in the ways of Balaam. Is it easy to get Bible mixed up. I probably have on one occasion made mistakes on this story concerning Balaam, and perhaps the reason why his God demonstrating his authority to his prophet. Why is it necessary for God to show his people his authority to stop, control and even stop them from taking filthy money or money from divination/sorcery. I tell you why, if you ever run into the devil and his people you can not take from them to do anything against God and his people. God is going to prevent you to escape their evil. God does not want anyone to tangle with the enemy for reward.
If God's people or his people give you money to bless to honor his people, then it of God. For the enemy to ask you to curse means he trying to control God's prophet. Trying to change God's word into a lie of his people being a bless people. There are people that would do anything for a dollar and especially ten dollars and more, but God able to prevent someone from sinning against his people.
We all sin and fall short of the glory of God, yet why is it important in this story and not necessarily elsewhere. It was a testimony for King Balak, whose people these Israelites were and not to cause them harm or prevent them from their travel to the promise land.
Are we standing in the way of God in our actions? Is our actions of God or the devil. We all get mad and say things we might not even mean, but they loose like a canon ball. The Prophet called by God called to go into enemy territory. God will show Balaam in scripture if you continue reading his power to prevent his feet from falling and to testify about God before King Balak.
God's authority to give job to his people for a testimony to the heathens of our world. Be a light not the devil. We all are devilish at times in our life, because of our humanity, but choose today, who you rather serve, rather see changes God can do in your life. Put away your cursing, put away your sin, and let your light shine for Jesus and him alone. You can not serve God and mammon/money.
Dear Heavenly Father help us to receive your reward for our faith first in you and let our obedience be not to gain reward of the devil. in Jesus precious name, Amen.

24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
