Daily Devotions:
by Christina Farris

Genesis 26:1-33 KJV
1 And there was a famine in the land, beside the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went unto Abimelech king of the Philistines unto Gerar.
2 And the LORD appeared unto him, and said, Go not down into Egypt; dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of:
3 Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father;
4 And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed;
5 Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.
6 And Isaac dwelt in Gerar:
7 And the men of the place asked him of his wife; and he said, She is my sister: for he feared to say, She is my wife; lest, said he, the men of the place should kill me for Rebekah; because she was fair to look upon.
8 And it came to pass, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out at a window, and saw, and, behold, Isaac was sporting with Rebekah his wife.
9 And Abimelech called Isaac, and said, Behold, of a surety she is thy wife: and how saidst thou, She is my sister? And Isaac said unto him, Because I said, Lest I die for her.
10 And Abimelech said, What is this thou hast done unto us? one of the people might lightly have lien with thy wife, and thou shouldest have brought guiltiness upon us.
11 And Abimelech charged all his people, saying, He that toucheth this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.
12 Then Isaac sowed in that land, and received in the same year an hundredfold: and the LORD blessed him.
13 And the man waxed great, and went forward, and grew until he became very great:
14 For he had possession of flocks, and possession of herds, and great store of servants: and the Philistines envied him.
15 For all the wells which his father's servants had digged in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines had stopped them, and filled them with earth.
16 And Abimelech said unto Isaac, Go from us; for thou art much mightier than we.
17 And Isaac departed thence, and pitched his tent in the valley of Gerar, and dwelt there.
18 And Isaac digged again the wells of water, which they had digged in the days of Abraham his father; for the Philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham: and he called their names after the names by which his father had called them.
19 And Isaac's servants digged in the valley, and found there a well of springing water.
20 And the herdmen of Gerar did strive with Isaac's herdmen, saying, The water is ours: and he called the name of the well Esek; because they strove with him.
21 And they digged another well, and strove for that also: and he called the name of it Sitnah.
22 And he removed from thence, and digged another well; and for that they strove not: and he called the name of it Rehoboth; and he said, For now the LORD hath made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.
23 And he went up from thence to Beersheba.
24 And the LORD appeared unto him the same night, and said, I am the God of Abraham thy father: fear not, for I am with thee, and will bless thee, and multiply thy seed for my servant Abraham's sake.
25 And he builded an altar there, and called upon the name of the LORD, and pitched his tent there: and there Isaac's servants digged a well.
26 Then Abimelech went to him from Gerar, and Ahuzzath one of his friends, and Phichol the chief captain of his army.
27 And Isaac said unto them, Wherefore come ye to me, seeing ye hate me, and have sent me away from you?
28 And they said, We saw certainly that the LORD was with thee: and we said, Let there be now an oath betwixt us, even betwixt us and thee, and let us make a covenant with thee;
29 That thou wilt do us no hurt, as we have not touched thee, and as we have done unto thee nothing but good, and have sent thee away in peace: thou art now the blessed of the LORD.
30 And he made them a feast, and they did eat and drink.
31 And they rose up betimes in the morning, and sware one to another: and Isaac sent them away, and they departed from him in peace.
32 And it came to pass the same day, that Isaac's servants came, and told him concerning the well which they had digged, and said unto him, We have found water.
33 And he called it Shebah: therefore the name of the city is Beersheba unto this day.

Isaac obeyed God and went to Gerar. This place was the land of the Philistines. God had told Isaac to go to this land instead of Egypt where Abraham had once gone during a famine in his day. One of the downfalls of the believers is the reaction to the world in which they live. Isaac like his father, had his wife lie for him. Yet Isaac lie, was truly a lie, and his father lie to Abimelech was actually truth. Two generation of dishonesty to a foreign king. Both Abraham and Isaac claimed their wife was their sister. It is true that his wife was kin to him outside of marriage, but she was his wife. I have to wonder how each of the women felt in the story and realize with Isaac response, his wife he was not willing to die for her, nor was he desiring to give her up. Yet he was only trying to protect both of them. Isaac's faith in God was not strong enough to believe God would protect them in the land God sent him too.

Isaac would live among the Philistines planting a huge crop that paid him back hundred fold. He was a successful herdsman and the Philistines were jealous, and even jealous of his beautiful wife. Philistines did have a fear of God, to the point the king told Isaac to leave and Isaac moved into the valley. A king is another career goaled in scripture. Isaac worked hard and had two types of work and servants to help him with that work. He was prosperous enough to have servants, or people to work for him. They tended the sheep and helped in the field. Isaac also dug three wells and each well was claimed by the Philistines but the last well was his. Isaac went to Beersheba built altar there and God reminded him of his promise and that he was to fear him rather then man.

Abimelech came along with one friend and the Chief Captain of his army to see Isaac. And Isaac wanted to know why he was there, only discover this king Abimelech wanted peace with him, because he knew the Lord was with him. What is our career choice, what is God's call on one's life. God's call is for us to be first believers and then obedient to him. When we take our faith and use it according to God's will, he blesses the individual labor in full view of others.

The hardest thing is to obey God, despite our own eye sight, because we see things with our eyes, and God sees the future. Our obedience is a plus in our faith. Our sin against the world is our downfall, to our witness to God when it something that God has already promised us. For Isaac knew his wife Rebecca was the mother of his children. Yet he fear man more then God to the point he lied to man to protect himself at the cost of maybe loosing his wife.

If God has promise you one thing and you fighting fear of your heart, you need to ask why? God is blessing your labor, your work of your hands, and your not trusting God, I would ask why can't you trust him to fulfill his will in your life? Isaac a man of God, but yet still a man only seeing with his own eyes possible consequences of having a beautiful wife. The word beautiful should be enough to know why Isaac feared for his life. Yet why did he not fear going to the land God sent him too? God promised him victory in that land. He got that victory when the King came to make peace with him. Yet the victory would of been his earlier perhaps if he had not feared the Philistines might want his wife.

Are we going to allow God to fight our battles for us? I have been watching the fruit of God's ministry in our world. And when those that trust in God the fruit of their labor comes to fruition, it becomes a blessing to all. Yet often the goal in life seems a long way off, yet with God all things are possible.

One of the long term goals for God's people is eternity, one of the short term goals of faith is first belief unto salvation, and doing the will of God in the present of their enemies that turn toward God. That is a work of fruition for eternal goal. Nothing we do will establish the long term goal that already promised, but it our progress to that goaled is a testimony of how we live our life in reliance to God that will change even our enemies.

God requires us to be brave, yet are we brave enough to be the soldier God has called us to be. Isaac in his early career was not there yet, but when he seen the fear of God in the king, he knew in his heart God had made the change in King Abimelech. Can we speak truth even when we fear man, and God both. Would it be much easier to hide under a rock at times, or in our shell so to speak. If we want to see God change lives we got to stand up. When the North and South fought, the south would of won, if they had not given a victory dance in Manassas at Bull Run, or that is what what history books claimed over 30 years ago. They only had to pursue the North, but instead shouted prematurally for victory. People we got to continue fight of prolife, though some of what I seen in the new agenda, seems solid for woman's rights issues, we can not allow abortion to be done by hidden agendas, not seen fully by the naked eye. Christian world needs to keep showing how human life begins at conception. Why fear what only God can change, but the battle to be won is in sight. Does it matter what party wins, no, it only if those who fight for life, acknowledge the life in the womb and not just woman's life. Save both not just one.

Isaac stance was he figure he would live even he called his wife his sister, but in reality, he could of lost both lives, because of fear. He only got outcasted, then reinstated because God was with him. Where is our battle the enemy within ourselves that fear man and God. Hopefully not in that order. God called us to a task, but it does not mean we do not labor in our work, or prosper by our labor. God bless those that work hard. Part of a good career choice, is using it to follow the will of God in one's life. Farming and sheep herding was still a major career choice at the time of Isaac. With livestock one could sell or traded and with crops you barter for other things. Those that use coins traded for coins.

What the point Isaac hope of family line of everlasting began with faith, and seeing the well spring up full of water, and not sewer, but faith that grew others into faith as well. Isaac had two twin boys, not a slew of children, one with faith and other still prosperous, whether with faith or not, needs close examination.

Was is prosperity, what we can see, or what our future holds in God's kingdom. Where does our prosperity live, in the world we in or the promise of our eternity, in the heavenly realm yet to come to us. Find your passion and seek the will of God in your life. Isaac obey God and was fruitful.

Dear Heavenly Father move the mountains of fear that hinders our witness of faith, so others can see your light. Help us to work in the career that is prosperous in your ways and for your will to be done in our life. in Jesus precious name, Amen.

8 For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.
