Today we are going to talk about extravagances. Even Jesus seen a time of when money is spent even when it would be more noted to give to the poor. There is nothing wrong with having money or wealth and to enjoy it, but there is time and place to enjoy and a time and a place to give. There is time and place to receive. Jesus not a man of wealth, but a teacher, a Savior, a healer, the only begotten Son of God and a living sacrifice for mankind. Christ came to Bethany to be with his friend, he had raised from the dead name Lazarus. Martha served the tables and Mary anointed the feet of Jesus. Judas Iscariot got angry because he felt the perfume could have been sold and the money given to the poor and Jesus rebuked him. Let us read today’s passage. John 12:1-11 KJV (1) Then Jesus six days before the passover came to Bethany, where Lazarus was which had been dead, whom he raised from the dead. (2) There they made him a supper; and Martha served: but Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him. (3) Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment. (4) Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, which should betray him, (5) Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor? (6) This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein. (7) Then said Jesus, Let her alone: against the day of my burying hath she kept this. (8) For the poor always ye have with you; but me ye have not always. (9) Much people of the Jews therefore knew that he was there: and they came not for Jesus' sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead. (10) But the chief priests consulted that they might put Lazarus also to death; (11) Because that by reason of him many of the Jews went away, and believed on Jesus. The act of Jesus feet being anointed was symbolic it was preparation of his body for burial. Yet Mary perhaps at this point understood it not. Yet with Jesus words she knew. She had wept tears that cover Jesus feet a form of mourning. After all in last weeks lesson we realize one man would die for the nation for the high Priest had spoken it. Jesus was consider there target. No doubt this was not a secret among the people. People were ready to rally around Jesus. Ready to storm Jerusalem and take the palace. Let us continue today’s passage. John 12:12-19 KJV (12) On the next day much people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, (13) Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord. (14) And Jesus, when he had found a young ass, sat thereon; as it is written, (15) Fear not, daughter of Sion: behold, thy King cometh, sitting on an ass's colt. (16) These things understood not his disciples at the first: but when Jesus was glorified, then remembered they that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things unto him. (17) The people therefore that was with him when he called Lazarus out of his grave, and raised him from the dead, bare record. (18) For this cause the people also met him, for that they heard that he had done this miracle. (19) The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing? behold, the world is gone after him. The palm branches a sign of the coronation and the cry that said Behold thy king cometh riding on an ass‘s colt. The coronation given by the people. This caused the Pharisees to be angry. Afraid that if word leaked out to the Romans that the people had elected Jesus as king it would cause the wrath of the government to come down on them. In their view people had gone mad after him for Lazarus was raised from the dead. A king that could heal, a king that could raise the dead, was what they wanted. Life everlasting. Yet they understood not that Christ would not be taking the throne. They understood not that Jesus would have to die. The feast would continue and many would want to meet Jesus because of the raising of Lazarus. Some Greeks were present and came to worship at the feast. John 12:20-33 KJV (20) And there were certain Greeks among them that came up to worship at the feast: (21) The same came therefore to Philip, which was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and desired him, saying, Sir, we would see Jesus. (22) Philip cometh and telleth Andrew: and again Andrew and Philip tell Jesus. (23) And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified. (24) Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit. (25) He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal. (26) If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour. (27) Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour. (28) Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again. (29) The people therefore, that stood by, and heard it, said that it thundered: others said, An angel spake to him. (30) Jesus answered and said, This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes. (31) Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out. (32) And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me. (33) This he said, signifying what death he should die. Jesus began to explain about sacrifice. How for the fact unless a corn of wheat dies, it can not bring forth much fruit. He was explaining his death would bring forth fruit. See when something is planted in the ground it springs up and grows. Christ resurrection would bring forth fruit in abundance. It would draw even more to Him, after all Lazarus had risen from the grave and many had sought him out. Those that watched Brave Heart the movie knows not until the heroine William Wallace wife died did he lead a the Scottish against England King Edward I. A revolt to unify the people. Another example is the way World War I started with the killing of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria. The icing on the cake so to speak. I think one of the chief concern with death of someone that sparks a war is that it is about vengeance and not necessarily the fight of freedom. The fight of Freedom is something worth fighting for. It is like 911 causing Americans to take a stand and say no more enough is enough. There were many reason for the Gulf War just like the Civil War. It was not fought over just gas and fuel, but freedom of people. Civil War fuel by the death of John Brown an Abolitionist who died by hanging at Harper Ferry Virginia for freeing the slaves. What one must decide if battle is worth the lives of so many people. Jesus believed in his case it was but He would rise again. None of the other example I gave did they rise from the tomb in the physical sense. Making their death a massacre of innocent lives or victory to get rid of evil leaders. It makes no since to kill for whatever reason, yet despite all else it cause people to take a stand. Christ death and resurrection would cause a spiritual war that would lead to physical fight. A fight worthy to bring peace to all nations. A peace that would never end. Yet the thing that not realized by many not until Christ return’s will peace be realized. Until that time we can hope that our testimony of love without revenge, unless threaten will not be waged with violence. If attacked one has the right to fight back. Yet the disciples of Jesus began fighting with words and not swords. Paul being a living example of sacrifice of dealing with persecution, stoning, beatings, and imprisonment to spread the gospel of love. As Christians we still fight with love and not swords. Governmentally our nation fights with what ever tactic deems necessary to promote peace around the world. To promote freedom. Yet tru5h freedom only comes through Christ. Because Christ freedom comes through love. If you got someone shooting at you that not love. You got someone battering you that not love. Lightening occurred and God spoke and testified and said I will glorify and glorify it again this speaking of Jesus name. The Word of God would be glorified and would continue to be glorified. For Christ died for all mankind not just one person. He died for all mankind’s sin. One innocent blood shed for many. That He would lead all to Him. Son of man would have to be lifted up to draw thousand to Him. This plot by the Jews would work in God’s favor. For God was not going to allow the death of His Son to end there but continue with the resurrection so all people would know of His love for them. If Christ had remained in the grave, no one would be able to speak to God. God wrath and anger would of burnt upon us. Yet Christ on the cross said, “Father forgive them for they know not what they do.” the act of forgiveness a mighty love not by grace of human ability but by the grace of God’s ability through His Son. John 12:34-43 KJV (34) The people answered him, We have heard out of the law that Christ abideth for ever: and how sayest thou, The Son of man must be lifted up? who is this Son of man? (35) Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth. (36) While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. These things spake Jesus, and departed, and did hide himself from them. (37) But though he had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed not on him: (38) That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed? (39) Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again, (40) He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them. (41) These things said Esaias, when he saw his glory, and spake of him. (42) Nevertheless among the chief rulers also many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue: (43) For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God. Christ law abides forever that law is love. Jesus being the Word of God in the flesh, being born of a virgin was born in the flesh as a man, so He was both Son of Man and Son of God. Conceived by the Holy Spirit the word going forth as God had decreed on Mary that she would have a child. Yet there are those that believe not and only have the light while they can see but in the night the plot devilish plot to destroy the innocent. Though good things happen in the day and evil does come forth in the daytime as well as the night, goodness can only come with law of Christ which is love and forgiveness. However the Pharisees were so concern about their own hide that care little about Jesus so they plotted to kill him. Not realize the mercy of God was about to come because of their blindness because they could not see that Jesus was the Messiah. John 12:44-50 KJV (44) Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me. (45) And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me. (46) I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness. (47) And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world. (48) He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day. (49) For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak. (50) And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak. If you believe in Jesus you must believe in God the Father, why because God sent Jesus to save the world. He speaks what the Father tells him to speak. Most ministers do that, if they love God. They try to say what God speaks to them about, though sometimes humanity creeps in. Jesus though spoke exactly what God told Him to say. Did exactly what God said to do. For He was the Word of God in the flesh. He could do nothing more or less because of who He was and is. Who do you believe Jesus is? You decide the decision is yours. You might not have next week or tomorrow so decide today. However God mercy is great, so begin praying help my unbelief Lord for He will show you the way. Let us pray Dear Heavenly Father help those who need to make decisions of who Christ is. Let this be a time of saying yes Lord I believe Jesus died for my sins and rose again so I could have a new life. I receive you as Lord and Savior. In Jesus precious name, Amen.
