Daily Devotions:
by Christina Farris

Luke 22:39-46; 63-71 KJV
39 And he came out, and went, as he was wont, to the mount of Olives; and his disciples also followed him.
40 And when he was at the place, he said unto them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation.
41 And he was withdrawn from them about a stone's cast, and kneeled down, and prayed,
42 Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.
43 And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him.
44 And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.
45 And when he rose up from prayer, and was come to his disciples, he found them sleeping for sorrow,
46 And said unto them, Why sleep ye? rise and pray, lest ye enter into temptation.

63 And the men that held Jesus mocked him, and smote him.
64 And when they had blindfolded him, they struck him on the face, and asked him, saying, Prophesy, who is it that smote thee?
65 And many other things blasphemously spake they against him.
66 And as soon as it was day, the elders of the people and the chief priests and the scribes came together, and led him into their council, saying,
67 Art thou the Christ? tell us. And he said unto them, If I tell you, ye will not believe:
68 And if I also ask you, ye will not answer me, nor let me go.
69 Hereafter shall the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God.
70 Then said they all, Art thou then the Son of God? And he said unto them, Ye say that I am.
71 And they said, What need we any further witness? for we ourselves have heard of his own mouth.

Luke 23:1-24 KJV
1 And the whole multitude of them arose, and led him unto Pilate.
2 And they began to accuse him, saying, We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying that he himself is Christ a King.
3 And Pilate asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answered him and said, Thou sayest it.
4 Then said Pilate to the chief priests and to the people, I find no fault in this man.
5 And they were the more fierce, saying, He stirreth up the people, teaching throughout all Jewry, beginning from Galilee to this place.
6 When Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked whether the man were a Galilaean.
7 And as soon as he knew that he belonged unto Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who himself also was at Jerusalem at that time.
8 And when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceeding glad: for he was desirous to see him of a long season, because he had heard many things of him; and he hoped to have seen some miracle done by him.
9 Then he questioned with him in many words; but he answered him nothing.
10 And the chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused him.
11 And Herod with his men of war set him at nought, and mocked him, and arrayed him in a gorgeous robe, and sent him again to Pilate.
12 And the same day Pilate and Herod were made friends together: for before they were at enmity between themselves.
13 And Pilate, when he had called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people,
14 Said unto them, Ye have brought this man unto me, as one that perverteth the people: and, behold, I, having examined him before you, have found no fault in this man touching those things whereof ye accuse him:
15 No, nor yet Herod: for I sent you to him; and, lo, nothing worthy of death is done unto him.
16 I will therefore chastise him, and release him.
17 (For of necessity he must release one unto them at the feast.)
18 And they cried out all at once, saying, Away with this man, and release unto us Barabbas:
19 (Who for a certain sedition made in the city, and for murder, was cast into prison.)
20 Pilate therefore, willing to release Jesus, spake again to them.
21 But they cried, saying, Crucify him, crucify him.
22 And he said unto them the third time, Why, what evil hath he done? I have found no cause of death in him: I will therefore chastise him, and let him go.
23 And they were instant with loud voices, requiring that he might be crucified. And the voices of them and of the chief priests prevailed.
24 And Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they required.

If you knew you were about to be arrested, despite your calm, would you be able to remain calm. Watching the show cops and others like it, the ability to stay calm by newly arrested people are not always seen, nor are they always calm prior to an arrest. Not until they reach the jailhouse do they get their emotions under control, only a percent do. Yet for a cop it is routine. What is my point, but the anger of an innocent person arrest is justified, yes but it is still treated the same way. What is the point. Jesus was praying in the garden the night of his arrest, and despite all that was coming, he was strengthen by angel, pleading with his Father to remove the cup/journey from him that was coming in his human life. Yet this cup could not be removed with not fulfilling the Father's will. As Jesus prayed the preparation for what lied ahead was for not only our benefit but for Christ benefit. He would need the strength to endure in the flesh.

When I think of the worse pain I ever was fixing to face in my life, I can remember crying out to Jesus. Yet I still went through it. Everyone of us go through difficult times in our life, some of us go without pain that is imageable by a healthy person that never faced it. The pain for Christ was both emotional, and physical. Here Christ in the garden sweated drops of blood. Yet He still cried out "Father not your will but thine. As a child the crucifixition story held a fancination with the pain Christ endured. With my own pain I endured in my life time, I reflect much differently reading the story. I sure others that have beared extreme pain know that feeling as well. Yet Christ bore the weight of the world on his shoulders which is far greater then anything anyone on earth has had to endure in their life time. We may carry the cost of someone mistake on our shoulders for years but it never the weighs what Christ carried in regards to the errors of the world.

I want to take a look for a moment at the trial of Jesus. He is arrested, and goes willing to face his accusers. No I did not include the arrest, for one man lost his ear and within seconds of the incident his ear was healed by Jesus. Point being those around Jesus was ready to fight, they really needed to pray before the arrest, but instead they were on attack mode, not understanding the need for prayer. Jesus had prayed and that what I want to focus on the trials or period of interrogation. Jesus was calm through the entire process, showing no anger or rage outwardly. Was Jesus feeling the emotions of the horror around him, perhaps, but he acts not on any emotion besides sweating drop of blood in the garden.

Jesus is before the Priest and the Priest ask Jesus are you the Christ? Jesus replied if I tell you I am, you will not believe me. Jesus said you will not let me go, but wanted to know will they see the son of man sitting at the right hand of God or not? The Priest then ask are you the son of God? Jewish people teach that the people are children/son and daughters of God. The question is not even worth dignifying with an answer, but Jesus replies, with you tell me that I am. Priest were satisfied and lead him to legal law because they consider themselves enough witnesses to the event.

Let me break it down for you a bit. If Jesus is the Christ the crucifixion is necessary. The Priest understood they need to betray Jesus unto death. What point does the Priest understand what they were fixin to do to Jesus. Let me ask did their own prophesy justify their actions. Something I learned about God is his will is important. The fact the Jewish heart would be harden during this time, as prophesied only make the situation even easier to understand, if one believes in prophesy. The will of God being performed by harden hearts. In control of God the Father, however we must understand that the priesthood had also received prophesy that one many must die for the nation it found in John 18:14. Yet we also know the priest had been plotting for sometime to arrest Jesus and could find no justification to do so but prophesy. For the priesthood was it like walking through a fog of events, or was it motivated only by their own greed and need of security. Meaning by keeping peace and not stirring up crowds of people they could control an uprising of the people which would protect the people from the Roman government from coming and investigate the situation and destroying the lives of the people. The control of groups like we see happening in church world today. People want to praise the Lord and get together to do so, and because it draws a crowds of people the governement investigates. The failure to investigate a people correctly causes anger. Yet Jesus would still die innocently on the cross of Calvary. Jews traveled in groups to Israel for Passover and other events. No one thought about the crowd. With Jesus, he drew a crowd daily and everyday that crowd around him grew. Government does not question a group conference only revival in the land that continues for a long time period.

The situation with Christ was much different then just sabbath day attendance. If every Christian recording artist and plus some decided to have sing a thon across our nation on social media for let's say 365 days non stop sing a thon, it would cause a stir. If ministers lined up by the masses and did the same, it would cause quiet a stir. I think most like the idea of being able to come by drop something new they been working on and leave it for someone to pick up, makes it even a bigger listening or reading in world of great and small performers and larger then 365 day tele-a-thon. The world is listening. With emphasis on spirituality and not government things will change in the human heart because man desires the things of God when they see the positive influence it has. The priesthood was threaten by Christ revival because it effect their pocketbook and security. All the issues surrounding his arrest prior and the accusation of Jesus being the Christ to take him to the government so they could see him slaughter is only part of the issue.

Jesus stays calm as he goes before Pilate, and Herod. Both Roman leaders Herod and Pilate were in Jerusalem because of the Passover festivities. How convienent for God to perform his will. Each would question Jesus and find no reason to crucify him. Herod decided to have Jesus flogged, finding no fault with him, but he hope it would quiet the Jews. In fact he decide to go with the crowd instead of doing as Pilate who tried hard to wash his hands of the whole mess. Yet the voice of the Priest and the crowd crying crucify only made it harder, so Herod and Pilate only wanted to have him flogged and released, but people wanted him dead.

I do not doubt Jesus heard the crowd and once forced into the street to be flogged and taken to his cross, I can not imagine, his pacifist attitude through the whole ordeal. Yet He was. The truth of the matter, God ordained Jesus for this call to carry his cross in a peaceful manner. He calls all of us to carry our cross in a peacful manner, but in truth we seldom do. In America we are taught to stand up for our rights, to fight for freedom of others and to stand our ground. Yet in truth sometimes that is being a pacifist, but not in the case of our Lord and Savior Jesus. I used Luke for the trial but look at any of the Gospels and take time to read on the record of the trial of Jesus. Some of the apostles following in Christ footsteps would go to trial, and be killed as well after Christ ascension.

Stirring up a crowd the crime against Christ, being the Christ, being a king and being the Son of God were all reason they crucified him. Some of these accusations Jesus admits too and other things he claims the crowd declare these things about him. Where is the line drawn when the crowd cried crucify. Yet Roman government could of prevented it. This is how God allowed his Son to be the propitiator or atonement for our sin. To pay the price of sin of the world of man rejecting God. Where are you this morning when it comes to faith in God and allowing God to be Lord of your life, because the fact is we can not destory God, God exist, and his plan and will carry on. To be for God the blessings of God and protection of God is there for each and everyone of us. To receive Christ as Lord, is the will of God the Father. See Jesus arose from the grave he did not stay buried, but arose and his body did not face decay. And his body did not finish going through the burial process of the people with spices and oils. The three day delay because of the Sabbath day of rest. God must of reflect on Christ death as He did after creating the world. God so loved us He sent his only Son that whoever might believe would have eternal life. Do you believe this?

Dear Heavenly Father thank you for Jesus being a pacifist and redeemer. Thank you for the hope Jesus brings to us of eternal life if we will believe and follow after him. In Jesus precious name, Amen.
