What Is Your History With God

Daily Devotions:
by Christina Farris

Joshua 24:1-28 KJV
1 And Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem, and called for the elders of Israel, and for their heads, and for their judges, and for their officers; and they presented themselves before God.
2 And Joshua said unto all the people, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Your fathers dwelt on the other side of the flood in old time, even Terah, the father of Abraham, and the father of Nachor: and they served other gods.
3 And I took your father Abraham from the other side of the flood, and led him throughout all the land of Canaan, and multiplied his seed, and gave him Isaac.
4 And I gave unto Isaac Jacob and Esau: and I gave unto Esau mount Seir, to possess it; but Jacob and his children went down into Egypt.
5 I sent Moses also and Aaron, and I plagued Egypt, according to that which I did among them: and afterward I brought you out.
6 And I brought your fathers out of Egypt: and ye came unto the sea; and the Egyptians pursued after your fathers with chariots and horsemen unto the Red sea.
7 And when they cried unto the LORD, he put darkness between you and the Egyptians, and brought the sea upon them, and covered them; and your eyes have seen what I have done in Egypt: and ye dwelt in the wilderness a long season.
8 And I brought you into the land of the Amorites, which dwelt on the other side Jordan; and they fought with you: and I gave them into your hand, that ye might possess their land; and I destroyed them from before you.
9 Then Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, arose and warred against Israel, and sent and called Balaam the son of Beor to curse you:
10 But I would not hearken unto Balaam; therefore he blessed you still: so I delivered you out of his hand.
11 And ye went over Jordan, and came unto Jericho: and the men of Jericho fought against you, the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Girgashites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites; and I delivered them into your hand.
12 And I sent the hornet before you, which drave them out from before you, even the two kings of the Amorites; but not with thy sword, nor with thy bow.
13 And I have given you a land for which ye did not labour, and cities which ye built not, and ye dwell in them; of the vineyards and oliveyards which ye planted not do ye eat.
14 Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the LORD.
15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.
16 And the people answered and said, God forbid that we should forsake the LORD, to serve other gods;
17 For the LORD our God, he it is that brought us up and our fathers out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage, and which did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way wherein we went, and among all the people through whom we passed:
18 And the LORD drave out from before us all the people, even the Amorites which dwelt in the land: therefore will we also serve the LORD; for he is our God.
19 And Joshua said unto the people, Ye cannot serve the LORD: for he is an holy God; he is a jealous God; he will not forgive your transgressions nor your sins.
20 If ye forsake the LORD, and serve strange gods, then he will turn and do you hurt, and consume you, after that he hath done you good.
21 And the people said unto Joshua, Nay; but we will serve the LORD.
22 And Joshua said unto the people, Ye are witnesses against yourselves that ye have chosen you the LORD, to serve him. And they said, We are witnesses.
23 Now therefore put away, said he, the strange gods which are among you, and incline your heart unto the LORD God of Israel.
24 And the people said unto Joshua, The LORD our God will we serve, and his voice will we obey.
25 So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and set them a statute and an ordinance in Shechem.
26 And Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God, and took a great stone, and set it up there under an oak, that was by the sanctuary of the LORD.
27 And Joshua said unto all the people, Behold, this stone shall be a witness unto us; for it hath heard all the words of the LORD which he spake unto us: it shall be therefore a witness unto you, lest ye deny your God.
28 So Joshua let the people depart, every man unto his inheritance.

Throughout the Old Testament you see the Jewish people repeating their history if only a reflection of what God had taken them through from the time of Noah, to the promise land and beyond as time past. Where has God brought Israel unto Christ and where have Christians both Jewish and Gentiles been since that time in history to now. Everyone has a history when they have a relationship with God. Why reflect even for a moment on your history with God. If we took time to reflect on everyone's history with God there would be time periods, of obstacles along life ways. Most of us do not sail as smoothly as we like to through life and with faith. There are difficult times in everyone's life. And some difficulty is looked at as part of normal life, like passing of a love one, or friend, job loss, or accident, markers or passing of time. How we deal with these time periods often reflect our faith. No one has it all together all the time. One of the most negative and miraclous time periods in Israel history would be Egypt to and through the wilderness, though evidence of God was real, the reality of God so real, people still were in rebellion to God. Think for a moment the amount of water it took to dry the thirst of so many thousands of people in the wilderness and yet Moses hit a rock twice to wet all those people thirst. The darkness that cover the Israelites as Pharaoh drove his chariots towards the people, and right into the red sea where the water flood back together and drowned Pharaoh and his men. Now looking at this listing of reflection in Joshua we see the hornets that went before Israel driving out the enemy in the promise land. Not one sword used by Israel to gain the promise land. Yet Israel now had land not by their earning but by the hand of the Lord.

Why not serve a God that grants you the world and yet takes you through the valley of the shadow of death with no fear. Why not serve a God that does miracles before you according to his will for your life. Why not serve a God who does not forgive sin of spiritual adultery, but provides a sacrifice for sin for you. What is spiritual adultery, can it be forgiven? Spiritual adultery is seeking after other gods beside (God)Jehovah. When we trust in Jesus we are not committing adultery to God. God provide a sacrifice for sin, even the sin of Idolatary. All anyone ever had to do was confess sin and turn back to God, but so often what occured with following God for Israel they would forget their own history and their own journey with God.

I can not tell you was on the country music charts for this week, or even last week, but I can tell you I like country music and I like Christian contemporary too. Yet do I know the history of either of these the answer is no. I can tell you in the Christian world the music has changed greatly in the last century. The hymns of yesterday are fading into newer musical sounds. Words changing to fit the time period as well. Yet to understand past group of people helps one understand the issues and attitudes that define a people or person. Those that listen to music growing up can sing the lyrics after fifty years and not miss a note, but give it to the younger generation, they may of heard an old song maybe once or twice in their life time. The music maybe as catchy as now, but it loose its flavor of a newer generation.

There is a point unless we read scripture of a time, it sounds like yesterday news, unless we explore the time period of the people to understand yesterday news. For example the miracles, how many people were a witness to the event, how many people experienced these events in the wilderness. How many entering the Promise land experienced hornets going before them. How many people entering the promise land found milk and honey in their land. A land flowing with milk and honey was description of the promise land, before they even got there. What image do we get without knowing about the hornets going before them into the promise land?

Many distortation of the word without understanding and without reading. Yet once discovered the history references the New Testament can come alive especially when Christ and others refer to Old Testament. What we think and know about scripture is only discover a rich language within it of history and prophesy. Hornets were prophetic to Israel. It was first told in Exodus 23:28, which is reference in the continual scripture Study section below. To be in a land flowing with milk and honey was and is a symbol of peace and prosperity to the nation of Israel. One can understand the land of prosperity and promise, but to know how prophetic those terms are shows one much more about this God Israel serves and turns from only to repent again. God condemns sin of any kind, but adultery is like treason against God. Forgiveable but not without turning away with repentance and seeking God. When God prophesized to the prophets of the Messiah coming and about him being the sacrifice for sin, it also spoke of Israel heart being harden and did they really believe these things would happen to them. That their own eyes would be blinded as with Pharaoh blindness. It came because of the falling away from the worship of God. It came with the religious power acting like God and legalism affecting the leaders of the temple. Prophesy concerning the events around Christ and about Christ is only one time period where even gentiles were seeking Christ. What we fail to understand is God is not just a God to Christians, Jews, but also the Gentile nation. They watch and listen to what they see and perceive to be prophetic. They watch the moons for changing color and other signs of apocalypse age. Along with Armegeddon coming without understanding. Sometimes the mystery can be taken out by understanding just reference to Old Testament language, other things can only be wondered about. Yet we know the cry of peace and safety also means war.

Our leaders listen to the words peace and wonder is their war. Who is the war with? Is it with leaders of our land and other lands, or is it with God. Is it the spiritual war that occurs in the heart of man. Is it the devastation of lands filled with idolatry. Is America really safe from God? Our land is racked with idolatry and paganism as much as other lands. Our soul is in need of salvation beyond what we preceive. Idolatry in the acceptance of participation in holidays not of our faith. Is this Idolatry. Something to think on. Jesus was the only one God allowed his people to bow too in worship. God even calls in Hebrews 1 his Son God.

God is trying to wake the world with the events of horrid that take place around the world, though these horrids are by things God put in operation as far as the seasons and weather. It only a reminder of what God's wrath can really do to us, For God is a jealous God. And a God that does forgive, but here is one place it says he does not forgive(Joshua 24:19). I think it is a warning not to think you can repent if you turn away, it warning not to turn away because a second chance might not be given. If you worship God what has he done in your own life to convict your heart to do so. Where is your relationship with God right now, where do you hope you will be in coming years and for eternity. It time to reflect on yourself and God we trust in. We know Christ is King and yet we know Christ is the answer for how God pay for our failings to worship Him, and failings to obey Him. Yet my hope and pray is no one fails. Peter deny Christ, Judas betrayed Christ. Yet Judas found no forgiveness, and Peter found Jesus coming to see him.

Dear Heavenly Father, let your prophesy from old show us that your prophesy today is just as alive. Let us hold to the truth of your word. To worship you and to bow at the feet of our Messiah. In Jesus precious name, Amen.

Continual Scripture Study for Devotion:John 21:3-9 KJV
3 Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also go with thee. They went forth, and entered into a ship immediately; and that night they caught nothing.
4 But when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the shore: but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus.
5 Then Jesus saith unto them, Children, have ye any meat? They answered him, No.
6 And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find. They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes.
7 Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved saith unto Peter, It is the Lord. Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girt his fisher's coat unto him, (for he was naked,) and did cast himself into the sea.
8 And the other disciples came in a little ship; (for they were not far from land, but as it were two hundred cubits,) dragging the net with fishes.
9 As soon then as they were come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid thereon, and bread.

Exodus 23:24-33 KJV
24 Thou shalt not bow down to their gods, nor serve them, nor do after their works: but thou shalt utterly overthrow them, and quite break down their images.
25 And ye shall serve the LORD your God, and he shall bless thy bread, and thy water; and I will take sickness away from the midst of thee.
26 There shall nothing cast their young, nor be barren, in thy land: the number of thy days I will fulfil.
27 I will send my fear before thee, and will destroy all the people to whom thou shalt come, and I will make all thine enemies turn their backs unto thee.
28 And I will send hornets before thee, which shall drive out the Hivite, the Canaanite, and the Hittite, from before thee.
29 I will not drive them out from before thee in one year; lest the land become desolate, and the beast of the field multiply against thee.
30 By little and little I will drive them out from before thee, until thou be increased, and inherit the land.
31 And I will set thy bounds from the Red sea even unto the sea of the Philistines, and from the desert unto the river: for I will deliver the inhabitants of the land into your hand; and thou shalt drive them out before thee.
32 Thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor with their gods.
33 They shall not dwell in thy land, lest they make thee sin against me: for if thou serve their gods, it will surely be a snare unto thee.
