The Lord searches our hearts. This is one place the devil can not see or read. Only God sees the innerward soul of man. If you read enough scripture you will discover the heart is the most secret place of a person because it the one place that God sees and we know within ourselves. Our heart deceives us sometimes, only because it rages against the pain of this world, past present and future. The inward heart of man can not lie to God, but we can lie to ourselves when we refuse to believe the truth. To believe God is to believe truth. God searches our heart so he can know the truth about us. If God went by our actions we would be in trouble. Our actions might speak louder then words but it does not speak the emotion behind the action or the cause of the emotion of the action. Allow God to search you, and don't go searching after another god. God knows your heart already without your permission, but he sees your need for truth.
2 Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off.
To understand God knows our very location. The gps of man can not compare to the gps of God. God accurately knows not only our location but how to reach us. It is better then the tracking device on cellphones. Yet our crying out to him might be feel as no one is there, because your heart is more of give it to me God or anger why not provide this or that, When we really need to have that humble heart when approaching God even in times of trouble. If in a wreck, and entrapped you know that the only thing you are thinking is getting out of the car. Yet the only way to get out is the rescue team. The reality of the rescue might be afar off, but the reality of pain you are in is immediately. The first rescue worker to arrive on scene was Jesus for my accident, he took me through it, despite the fact I was still injured and rightly so. Bigger miracle would of been no bruising. That would of cause quite a stir among many, but Jesus in his wisdom knew I wasn't ready for that big of a miracle and neither was the world. The point Jesus knows our location, where we are and even know what we need. Yet instead of coming to the throne of grace with humility it more like why me Lord, or Lord I can not take much more, can you help, Lord, you could of done this or that for me. Why is it not with humbliness because when one thinks of speaking to a friend one is speaking to God in the language you might even speak to your peers, and they understand your pain, but what they can not see is the attitude of the heart. God understands what the motives are behind the heart. In times in our life we can think God does not understands but he knows already because he was knew before you could think, he faster then your brain waves.
3 Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways.
God surrounds us and knows are direction of our motion and when we are at rest. He is aware of everything we do. To think with him knowing all of us he still loves us. Remember he made you and me.
4 For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O LORD, thou knowest it altogether.
God knows what we are going to say before we speak, he knows our very thoughts and if our thoughts will become words.
5 Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me.
God is behind us and before us, and even rest his hand upon us in blessings or that needed pat on the back. His had on us might also mean he is propelling us in the direction we should go like a corrective parent.
6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it.
This knowledge is not retained in our memory, for often we do the opposite of what someone would do if they understood someone was constantly watching them. God reminds us of this fact occasionaly so we know that if we are evil he is aware of those motives, better to be honest with oneself and God. Perhaps this verse is reminder what God truly sees about us in the world we live in, and it might not always be a pleasant picture.
7 Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?
Where can you go from God. God created the universe and even the place the devil will live in eternity. God even has walked inside the pit of hell. Where can you go from God. You can not outrun God, you might for a short time out run someone, but you will not always be able too. We can not even hide from God.
8 If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.
God whether in our hearts or not he surrounds us. We can not go within ourselves because he sees our hearts, the doorway to our soul. God is with all of us everyday, yet is God welcome in our heart or the place we go.
9 If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea;
If we try and run from God in truth he is still there. We might try and run and hide, but God is still there. If we hide in the rocks and caves, God is still there. If we go to the furthest part of the sea from where we currently are he is right behind us and ahead of us. Think about this verse for a moment think of Israel as they went through the wilderness with God ahead of them and God behind them. Think God had surround them. How would you feel protected or controlled? If you got people watching over your shoulder and then watching you by standing in front of you, one might feel a little smothered. Or in a teaching situation you might just feel like the star of the show, but if your steps are being watched to the point one mistake is a penalty you might want to come out fighting or appreciate the corrective knowledge. You can either be an enemy of God or a star for God
10 Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.
David allows God to lead him and to take his right hand in friendship and embrace him. God wants to hold us and comfort us. To allow us to cry on his shoulder and yet strengthen us and walk beside us leading us in his ways.
11 If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me.
When evil prevails in our life and the darkness of fear comes our way, God's light is still with us showing us the way. Just because we are in a situation where we ought not to be, God is able to bring us forward in the right direction, because he is word is a light to our path.
12 Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee.
No matter if we are in the path of evil or light God's word does not change in our life, it is forever consistent. If in trouble seek God and repent of sin, If in light or on the steady pathway of being able to see where we are going God word is still consistent whether in the dark and in his light.
13 For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother's womb.
God knew us before we were ever born whether to a good family or a bad one. He knew the direction of our pathway before we did. He knew our parents and what it would be to live under their roof. He doesn't always remove bad things in our life from us. We are not exempt from our situation. We are not exempt from trials and tribulation. We are not exempt from horror. We are not exempt from knowing love of God or knowledge of his protection and ability to protect. He desires to takes us through the pain and darkeness of our life, to be able walk in the light of God's word whether in the dark or in the light. We were seen in our mother's womb, and what did God whisper to us we do not remember, but he does.
14 I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.
We need to honor the God of all creation because he was there when we were created. We are created by the reproduction process of conception and He knows our conception, today he even knows the conception of man when science uses test tube. What does science say to the microscope as they put eggs and sperm together, is it a joyful experience for the new life coming into the world and does it matter. God sees what man is doing with those test tubes, and gives life to those children, the one ingredient that science can not insert in that test tube is his word of life.
15 My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.
You can cover the nakeness of being made but you can not hide the nakeness of creation from God. You can not hide where one is created for God sees inside each of us and better then x-ray.
16 Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.
God wrote down what he seen about each one of us as we were being made. He knew when we have ten fingers and toes, or less, he knew when those things we consider flaws were uniquely made. he knew when those lungs would be developed and even our sex.
17 How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them!
How God thinks of us is important to us, because without understanding his love and mercy toward us we would never get saved we would feel trapped by a stalker and no way to escape. To know God's intention is not harm but to show love and protection, in the hope to makes things better for his children that will listen to Him and obey him.
18 If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand: when I awake, I am still with thee.
One can count the thoughts of God has about man. from love for the people he creates, the sorrow of God when children try to follow their own ways. Think of the dozens of turtles hatched going out sea and even some people try and help them get to the ocean, by keeping the prey away, while they run into the sea. God's rescue efforts must bring saddest to his heart and what he must say because man rejected his Son, Just like some baby turtles still go in the wrong direction falling prey to their enemies.
19 Surely thou wilt slay the wicked, O God: depart from me therefore, ye bloody men.
God will seek revenge on the heathen, who become an enemy of God's people.
20 For they speak against thee wickedly, and thine enemies take thy name in vain.
The enemy abuses God's name with swearing and speaking wickedness.
21 Do not I hate them, O LORD, that hate thee? and am not I grieved with those that rise up against thee?
God's enemies are our enemies and we are sadden by their rising up against God
22 I hate them with perfect hatred: I count them mine enemies.
God tells us to love our enemies. Why would God tell us to love our enemies, if he only going to revenge them. Well at one time we were the enemy of God, Even Paul writes of time he persecuted the saints. Yet God showed mercy to paul and paul got saved when Christ spoke to him and blinded him and then healed him. Paul was a jew, blinded by faith in God about the knowledge of who Jesus was, and God revealed his Son Jesus to Him. God's enemies can be transformed by coming to know Jesus.
23 Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:
David prayer is one that we too should have, to ask God to seach us and to test us and to know our thoughts. We need God to change us and mold us into who we should be.
24 And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
If God finds wickness in our hearts, we need God to change us. We want God to lead us down the right path, to teach us to follow his path. If God knows us so completely then we ought to want to allow his perfective hand to shape us into people worthy to be called his child. We start by receiving his Son has our Savior his name being Jesus. Understanding our sins our forgiven if one ask, we are given a new start and God begins molding and shaping us into people pleasing to him and even ourselves. God created he created man for his pleasure, because he delights in his creation, he delights in children, just like parents do their kids. Just like a parent God molds and shapes us in the people that have good qualities. Yet we must be willing to yield to God's ways and see God's ways and word is good. The other day coming down the highway with my husband I was telling him about as a youngster I was in first grade and they were teaching us to square dance, and immediately someone attitude was they hated square dancing, And my thoughts were i do not like squaring dancing too, but it was further then the truth. Yet the thought of disagreeing had never occured. to rebel against authority wasa new thought to me. Truth learning new things are positive unless harmful and I assure you to hold someone hand for square dancing was not evil even if it was the dirty little boy. Yet the idea was planted of something not having to be liked. God's laws are much like the square dance, we decide whether God's way is good for us. We decide if his direction is right. Then we make a choice to live that way. There are times as children of God we do have a rebellious spirit to his ways. God going to change your mind. He going to show you the difference of what love is and right thinking, because right thinking leads to success and prosperity. He knows what will help us to change and then God gives us a choice to yield to his ways. To follow after Him. It is a choice not one of control, though he sees all of man's body mind and our spirit all the time. To yield to God's Spirit is a right choice, until you do, you are enemy of God.
Dear Heavenly Father we humbly ask you to search our hearts and look for those things not pleasing to you. To search us and teach us your way so we become worthy of our call to follow Christ. In Jesus precious name, Amen.
Continual Scripture Study for Devotion:Hebrew 12:1-6 KJV
1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
3 For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.
4 Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin.
5 And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him:
6 For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.
