1 And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD: and the LORD delivered them into the hand of Midian seven years.
2 And the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel: and because of the Midianites the children of Israel made them the dens which are in the mountains, and caves, and strong holds.
3 And so it was, when Israel had sown, that the Midianites came up, and the Amalekites, and the children of the east, even they came up against them;
4 And they encamped against them, and destroyed the increase of the earth, till thou come unto Gaza, and left no sustenance for Israel, neither sheep, nor ox, nor ass.
5 For they came up with their cattle and their tents, and they came as grasshoppers for multitude; for both they and their camels were without number: and they entered into the land to destroy it.
6 And Israel was greatly impoverished because of the Midianites; and the children of Israel cried unto the LORD.
7 And it came to pass, when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD because of the Midianites,
8 That the LORD sent a prophet unto the children of Israel, which said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you forth out of the house of bondage;
9 And I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all that oppressed you, and drave them out from before you, and gave you their land;
10 And I said unto you, I am the LORD your God; fear not the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but ye have not obeyed my voice.
11 And there came an angel of the LORD, and sat under an oak which was in Ophrah, that pertained unto Joash the Abiezrite: and his son Gideon threshed wheat by the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites.
12 And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him, and said unto him, The LORD is with thee, thou mighty man of valour.
13 And Gideon said unto him, Oh my Lord, if the LORD be with us, why then is all this befallen us? and where be all his miracles which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt? but now the LORD hath forsaken us, and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites.
14 And the LORD looked upon him, and said, Go in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel from the hand of the Midianites: have not I sent thee?
15 And he said unto him, Oh my Lord, wherewith shall I save Israel? behold, my family is poor in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father's house.
16 And the LORD said unto him, Surely I will be with thee, and thou shalt smite the Midianites as one man.
17 And he said unto him, If now I have found grace in thy sight, then shew me a sign that thou talkest with me.
18 Depart not hence, I pray thee, until I come unto thee, and bring forth my present, and set it before thee. And he said, I will tarry until thou come again.
19 And Gideon went in, and made ready a kid, and unleavened cakes of an ephah of flour: the flesh he put in a basket, and he put the broth in a pot, and brought it out unto him under the oak, and presented it.
20 And the angel of God said unto him, Take the flesh and the unleavened cakes, and lay them upon this rock, and pour out the broth. And he did so.
21 Then the angel of the LORD put forth the end of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and there rose up fire out of the rock, and consumed the flesh and the unleavened cakes. Then the angel of the LORD departed out of his sight.
22 And when Gideon perceived that he was an angel of the LORD, Gideon said, Alas, O Lord GOD! for because I have seen an angel of the LORD face to face.
23 And the LORD said unto him, Peace be unto thee; fear not: thou shalt not die.
24 Then Gideon built an altar there unto the LORD, and called it Jehovahshalom: unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abiezrites. Why is we need proof of what God speaks to us, it maybe not so much doubt but prehaps it is to confirm it is from God and not the devil. Sounds like we do not know the voice of God or perhaps do not know the one coming to us speaking for God. I never meet angel that was not a known minister, but this was minister/prophet that came to Gideon, and the way we know is the staff lit the fire the consumed the offering in this story. The staff is only a simple walking stick. This man had prophesied to Israel but also sat under the tree before he spoke or prophesied to Gideon that he was a man of valour.
I had woman come to me for prayer once for her daughter, and as I prayed, I knew not what to pray, and I told her not to worry about her daughter it might be something simple, even desire for ministry. Several months past before i had a chance to hear from the woman and she spoke she told me her daughter was writting music for the Lord. I paused to think what I told her, and knew God had spoken to me. This is not boast or a brag. Because sometimes you pray and seek God not knowing and you really have to listen to his Spirit and be bold what you say. I was not ready for that type of revelation or for what God calling on my life. It caught me way off guard and still does today.
Is your faith strong enough that if someone prophesied to you, that you would just listen to God's Spirit to know it was from him, or would you ask for a sign. The fact Gideon ask for a sign means he was unclear, perhaps wanting to believe or even weary about the meaning of what was spoken to him. He was unclear if it was of God, and he did not want to go against the will of God for Israel perhaps, or taking on the leadership of warrior, was not his own desire, or passion in life. Maybe not sure if the call was of God, of man or wishful thinking.
It is easy to get a big head about what someone views as your potential in life that you go after it only to either fail, or not achieve the desire result. To go to war was not to be thought lightly or to hear declaration that he would save his people. This man that had watched him might of just seen his muscles from working in the field, nothing more, or wishful thinking that this man was young and strong enough to defeat the Midianites and Amorites. Gideon was not man of wealth, or the oldest of his brothers. Yet his desire was to believe the prophets of old as in the days of Moses, for God's miracles to be among the people once more. Just a desire is not enough it has to be the will of God to perform the work that he did in the days of Moses in the life of the people once more.
It like looking at a world situation and saying who can lead the army of God's people and Gideon looked strong because of his work, because of his agility and strength. Yet his money would not be his strength for he was poor. The Lord began with preparation of Gideon heart with that one desire to see God move in the people's life as he did in the time of Egypt. I had prayer once standing on a mountainside and it was for the Lord to let me hear your word come forth from what He called me tospeak/write and let me hear it come back around. Now be careful what you ask God for, because his word will echo around the world to every nation, what you say might not, but his word will echo around and across the nations if you desire to speak as he called you too. One might think it is only a nice thought, but it is God's word we want to echo not own thinking or thought. When you hear it echo back do not be surprised where it comes from, be more of how did it happen, and know God moved not man. Yet God may of used people of God to transport it or just the air waves. When people desire to hear God and to hear from him, the obvious must happen we must be still enough to listen and not to be consumed by the rattle of our brains.
Gideon desire to see the work of God in his time. Perhaps not so much fully grasping what it meant. The desire the seed was planted in his heart that when the prophet spoke, he had to have it confirm that it was from God, because of the particular call on his life. We need to be careful and listen to God's call. To confirm, it is of him, and not of the devil. That it is not just wishful thinking on our part. When the meal was placed on a rock and consumed by fire that was enough evidence for Gideon. The sign was given and proof it was God divine speaking through the prophet/angel. This indeed was a messenger sent from God to speak to the children of Israel and Gideon.
Gideon built an altar unto the Lord. Gideon was a man of faith and he would ask for more signs from God everytime God gave him instruction. He would test to make sure it was God's leadership in his life and not just wishful thinking. He would look for that confirmation. If God is moving in your life he will confirm you direction, and confirm your call is from him. The rest of the world might not believe it, i sure Gideons enemies probably did not, but they would be waken to the truth of the call on Gideons life when he began to defeat them one by one.
if God called you to save his people it can be spiritual, not just war, or a pandemic, What I mean by spiritually by sharing the truth of sharing God's salvation plan through Jesus. Wars will come and go but God will still arise in the heart of man to see salvation come to God's people. Everyone of God's people are called to bring that salvation message of Christ death and resurrection. That is death was payment for our sin, and his resurrection proof of his victory over death as well as each person who trust in him.
You want to see the mountains of sin removed from our land, it must start with the Gospel going deep and wide across the earth. It must begin with that water of life pouring over our community, our state and our country. How far will God's word spread. Only as far as you will release it to go freely, no as far as God desires it to go and he desires his word to go around the world. If the story of our life goes absent, then don't be alarmed, God desire his glory to shine in the earth by His word going forth. When Christ was prophesied as ensign to the King Ahaz, he did not want to tempt God by the sign, but sign was given anyway for the people. When God offers to give you a sign do not refuse it. It is a gift of God to confirm his will and his plan in the life of his people.
Dear Heavenly Father how great you are to plant not only seed of faith but the desire in each of us to see the days of Egypt come again with victory of your word and protection on your people. Yet at the same time we cry mercy on the people unbelief. In Jesus precious name, Amen.
Thanksgiving Day Countdown Day 5: Thank the Lord for his confirmation in His children's life, when we ask or need of it, in time of doubt and lack of confidence.
Continual Scripture Study:Isaiah 7:11-17 KJV
11 Ask thee a sign of the LORD thy God; ask it either in the depth, or in the height above.
12 But Ahaz said, I will not ask, neither will I tempt the LORD.
13 And he said, Hear ye now, O house of David; Is it a small thing for you to weary men, but will ye weary my God also?
14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
15 Butter and honey shall he eat, that he may know to refuse the evil, and choose the good.
16 For before the child shall know to refuse the evil, and choose the good, the land that thou abhorrest shall be forsaken of both her kings.
17 The LORD shall bring upon thee, and upon thy people, and upon thy father's house, days that have not come, from the day that Ephraim departed from Judah; even the king of Assyria.
