(26) And the angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which is desert.
(27) And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her treasure, and had come to Jerusalem for to worship,
(28) Was returning, and sitting in his chariot read Esaias the prophet.
(29) Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot.
(30) And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest?
(31) And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him.
(32) The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth:
(33) In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth.
(34) And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man?
(35) Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.
(36) And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?
(37) And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.
(38) And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.
(39) And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing.
(40) But Philip was found at Azotus: and passing through he preached in all the cities, till he came to Caesarea. |
As we wake to the news of Trump winning the popular vote, millions of things go through one’s mind. Will the American choice be what best for our country or will it be a disaster. I believe each president is called by God for service, yet I can say I do not agree with every president. To be call is to rise to the position whether what appears to be the voice of man or the voice of God. Today I want to talk about being called by God for His service. Philip, one the disciples that had been with Jesus was spoken to by an angel of God. God uses his angels to speak to his people to send them forth to share the Gospel. Abraham, Noah, Enoch, Samuel, King David and Solomon spoke to God directly. No one was between God and these men of old. Yet there were stories like the promise of conception of Samson and John the Baptist that came with a visitation from angel, Moses first was spoken to by angel of the Lord. A voice one might say spoke first to some perhaps to get man’s attention. Then there those like the Shepherds, Joseph and Mary that would hear the Gospel first hand from the angel of the Lord. Some of the prophets of old heard first from angel and then God and other’s heard directly from God and not angel. Isaiah, a man of unclean lips would find himself saying send me first having a vision with visitation of angel and then before throne of God because of the coal touching his lips to purify them for the work of the Lord. Peter had vision to go forth and would testify of who Jesus was and the Holy Spirit. Philip own journey first going because of persecution and now by the instruction of angel to go from Jerusalem to Gaza. Upon going Philip would find his the need to run along side a chariot by the Spirit of God to speak to an Ethiopian, a servant of the queen of Candace.
There are kings in scripture that were not godly men, but God spoke to them and they feared God enough to question Abraham about his wife. Nebuchadnezzar and Darius both kings that would listen to God and his prophets. We can not deny God’s people to call kings to put people into exile and Kings to release people from exile. The Ethiopian Eunuch is much like the Eunuch that visited Elijah for healing. Both Eunuch’s searching for truth of God. Eunuch that visit Elijah obeyed and went and dip in the Jordan seven times. After being healed chose to worship God. The Eunuch in the story above in today’s scripture would be studying about God through Old Testament scripture not know Jesus had come or understanding who Isaiah taught about. This would give Philip time to expound on scripture. Philip obey God so that the word might be open to a group of people by the Eunuch. Did Philip understand what is obedience to share Christ with Eunuch would do. Eunuch was ready to believe in Jesus as soon as heard. He desired baptism. Upon being baptize Philip went by the Spirit to another place to share the Gospel. The compelling of the Spirit to be witness to those willing to hear. Yet in other cases God spoke to man to change the course of history. Trump now elected will be changing the course of history once more. President Obama eight years ago changed history, but not the course of direction beyond political views. Would Bin Ladin been capture anyway if republicans had been in office. The world will never know. Would the republicans gotten our nation out of a great recession almost depression, the world will never know. Yet we can define politics easily in regards to God’s leading for some laws are in opposition to God’s laws. Those laws opposition on demonstrates free choice on earth by God, though it is not godly choice.
My prayer for our nation is one that say Lord lead our leaders forward for you, but when they go against your laws, remind us of our free choice to serve you. When our leaders obey God lets us remember God is in control and His Spirit reigns forever and ever. That whether in exile our voice to pray for our nation, or outside of exile, God will be done as God compels men and women to do his will both in politics and in the spiritual religious world.
Philip compelled as a child of God to share the Gospel by His Spirit. Not compelled by government to do so, but by God alone. Called to be evangelist and not a baptize in the Holy Spirit, but educator of the Gospel through the Old Testament. No matter your calling by God you have a job to listen and obey God. God’s reward comes with obedience. We might not be able to see the reward of Philip. But imagine being used by God to share the Gospel to a man in the desert going to Gaza. Imagine the reward of speaking to man about Jesus, knowing why he was sent was because of his call to share Jesus. Though foreign kings were said to be told by God to do things they were few cases of sole belief in God, because of the sharing.
The breakthrough of obeying God is by learning to hear God voice to obedience in Him. Philip knew God’s voice because He walked and talked with Jesus. He knew how to follow. He would be lead to many place to share the message of Jesus.
Dear Heavenly Father compel your people by allowing us to know when your Spirit speaks to us. Lord teach the heathens of our world the power of your hand in our world today. In Jesus name, Amen.

Continual Scripture Study for Devotion: Acts 10:17-19 KJV
(17) Now while Peter doubted in himself what this vision which he had seen should mean, behold, the men which were sent from Cornelius had made enquiry for Simon's house, and stood before the gate,
(18) And called, and asked whether Simon, which was surnamed Peter, were lodged there.
(19) While Peter thought on the vision, the Spirit said unto him, Behold, three men seek thee.
