Daily Devotions: by Christina FarrisGenesis 12:9-20 KJV
(9) And Abram journeyed, going on still toward the south.
(10) And there was a famine in the land: and Abram went down into Egypt to sojourn there; for the famine was grievous in the land.
(11) And it came to pass, when he was come near to enter into Egypt, that he said unto Sarai his wife, Behold now, I know that thou art a fair woman to look upon:
(12) Therefore it shall come to pass, when the Egyptians shall see thee, that they shall say, This is his wife: and they will kill me, but they will save thee alive.
(13) Say, I pray thee, thou art my sister: that it may be well with me for thy sake; and my soul shall live because of thee.
(14) And it came to pass, that, when Abram was come into Egypt, the Egyptians beheld the woman that she was very fair.
(15) The princes also of Pharaoh saw her, and commended her before Pharaoh: and the woman was taken into Pharaoh's house.
(16) And he entreated Abram well for her sake: and he had sheep, and oxen, and he asses, and menservants, and maidservants, and she asses, and camels.
(17) And the LORD plagued Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai Abram's wife.
(18) And Pharaoh called Abram, and said, What is this that thou hast done unto me? why didst thou not tell me that she was thy wife?
(19) Why saidst thou, She is my sister? so I might have taken her to me to wife: now therefore behold thy wife, take her, and go thy way.
(20) And Pharaoh commanded his men concerning him: and they sent him away, and his wife, and all that he had. |
It always surprises me how great of faith Abraham had until it came to the protection of his family. He would lie to protect his family. No Abraham told the truth of Sarah being his sister, but she was actually a half sister to Abraham. Incest laws did not come about until the 1900’s That is why perhaps incest has plagued our child welfare system for several decades. It takes time for some to adjust to laws of the land. It never makes abuse right, but it explains why some areas still have a higher rate of abuse of children then others. Less education causes problems, though it happens in rich and educated circles too. However this is not about children this is about marriage. In some culture wife swapping was not crime, nor the taking of women to be part of a harem. In this case Sarah became part of a harem belonging to the king because of her beauty. Abraham did not lie of who Sarah was, but lied of her relationship with Abraham being his wife. God did not send Abraham into the promise land to die but to have offspring as numerous as the stars. Yet the promise is before Abraham from God, and yet Abraham trust not in the promise of Go. Instead Abraham allows the King to take his wife because he knows he is physically out numbered. With the lie he figures he will be protected and would not die. Sarah lies as well going into the palace. The king people begin to get sick with a great plague. In those days when a mysterious plague or illness came they did not look for a microscope but for a person to blame. They felt the gods were angry at them. There was God angry, the God of Abraham.
The King questions Abraham only to discover that Sarah is Abraham wife. And the king is angry and send them away. This would happen twice in the history of Abraham. However God only spoke to this king through a plague. The second king God speak to him in a dream. God’s plague only caused Abraham to loose potential friends. God used the plague to protect the marriage of Abraham, despite his inability to rely on him. God protects the ignorant of those he has a designed plan for that will effect history. Abraham would be a father of a great nation, not just one but two. Two nations one because of sin and the other because of promise and not faith. Abraham strong in faith in his life over some things. Trust God to take him to an unknown land to him. Yet not willing to trust for heir or protection of his family.
It is easier to trust God for some things then others. Where do you lack. If God put you with someone did He do it for a purpose? If He did it for a purpose are you protected by God. Is God will in your marriage? The day you begin to trust God in your life, He is going to protect you for His purpose. Yet He will protect you for his purpose even if you step out of his will or are completely out of his will in your life. We must be careful on the side we are running on, the side of God’s will or against God. You can be used or blessed, which is it going to be. Abraham was definitely used by God, but he was also learning how to follow the will of God for his life. Follow the Lord’s will and you will not have to fear what man will do to you.
Dear Heavenly Father thank you for your divine protection in our lives and the lives of those in our life that is according to your will. In Jesus precious name, Amen.
Countdown To Thanksgiving 21 Days: Thank God For the protection over marriage when we trust in Jesus. Continual Scripture Study for Devotion: Hebrews 13:4-6 KJV
(4) Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.
(5) Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.
(6) So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.
