1 And Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the inhabitants of Gilead, said unto Ahab, As the LORD God of Israel liveth, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word.
2 And the word of the LORD came unto him, saying,
3 Get thee hence, and turn thee eastward, and hide thyself by the brook Cherith, that is before Jordan.
4 And it shall be, that thou shalt drink of the brook; and I have commanded the ravens to feed thee there.
5 So he went and did according unto the word of the LORD: for he went and dwelt by the brook Cherith, that is before Jordan.
6 And the ravens brought him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening; and he drank of the brook.
7 And it came to pass after a while, that the brook dried up, because there had been no rain in the land. This morning I got a little surprise taking a bath. A baby bird found a small crack with enough light to make him curious around the fan in the bathroom. She decided it looked like a good place to investigate and it began to peck a hole around that crack and I holler for my husband. The bird made a hole big enough to get his head in. It was small bird. But it was a bird. A bird had made a nest in the attic area, where one of the undereaves had blown off and we had not had time to fix it. Now I got to wait for Mrs. Crow to leave to fix the uneave, but hubby fixed the ceiling quickly so no light is now shinging through to attract her. Of course the story in 1 KIngs of a raven made me think, is God sending this little bird for a purpose. Perhaps. Or only a reminder of somethings needing mending before next winter or summer heat. This is not the first time Mrs crow thought this was her house. Her cousin Mrs Grackle came and moved in once under another section. She never bother us not even when leaving the house, thought his nest was above the door. Birds can be a nuisance or your best friend. In Elijah case this bird was Elijah best friend, for it brought food for him to eat. I can imagine this raven swooping down into the brook of water and catching fish and laying it down to perhaps eat and old Elijah chasing it off and setting that fish upon an open fire to cook for a meal.
The word of God says that God himself command that bird to feed him there. It says nothing about it swooping down grabbing a fish and Elijah chasing it off to grab his meal, but for a moment it is an easy explanation. The bigger predator getting the last laugh, but in this case, Elijah went and hide himself because of a drought and God said he would provide for him. However something interesting it was not just meat that old bird provided it was bread. Now bread has to be made, this was actual bread, where it came from only the raven knows where it comes from the hand of God, and Elijah knew that provision was from the Lord, for the Lord had declare it. When Elijah is told to go to the village in yesterday lesson and find a widow woman there, he did not question it.
I have to wonder if Elijah question the Lord at all during his journey to hide himself, or to go to a certain village. The point being it is important to note Elijah obeyed the Lord. With obedience came blessings from above. I often wonder about blessings of God. It not if God is going to provide is who is handing us the meal, or how is it being provided. It not if a meal is coming but where did it come from. Some people even examine what they eat to great detail before eating the first bite, to see if really safe to eat and others gobble it down not worrying about how it was made.
Elijah did not say the food was unclean, because of the bird that served it, but accepted and ate it and did not worry about it. Peter, a disciple of Jesus fell into a trance and saw a vessel like sheet coming down and seen it full of unclean meat only to refuse to eat what was offered, the first time it was lowered. God told him what he made clean was clean. But in the next time it was lower it still had unclean meat and God said what he made clean was clean. It happened three times before being received up into heaven. Downstairs were men that were gentiles that come to fetch Peter for a Centurion name Cornelius.
Elijah did not refuse the meat of unclean bird, he ate the food from a bird that kind of nasty bird. He was not bother by what God told him to do. Peter on the other hand wanted to refuse the meat from heaven that was unclean. Often we judge where something comes from only to discover it safer then what you or someone else you know might fix.
Some people are amazed by a teaching about cleaning and unclean meat for there are many things eaten that were once consider unclean by dietary laws of years gone by of the Jewish faith. Yet it all has to do with proper cooking of meat for health reasons, some not even realize it can make one sick. Those of you who are struggling with diet right now because of financial struggle, you probably are not online either. However if you are, then God bless you. Unfortunately our world has gone to computers and homeless even having computer communication with every hotspot available out there. There is a point don't be ashamed of what you eat to survive, be ashamed for not being thankful for it. God's mercy is great. I know, I once found myself with a handout of fresh veggies from a person's garden given to me and whatever I had bought with a few bucks I had left. I mixed it all together and ate. Made it into a soup with what was left to try and stretch it tell I hopefully found work. God blesses his children with provision, it might not be what you want or even by what or who is handing it to you, or where it came from, but it is food none the less. Our comfort zone is not about wealth, it about obedience ot the Lord.
Peter had a spiritual full course meal when he meet Cornelius and see Cornelius and his family receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit. He had a spiritual meal coming from Gentiles people that were not Christians until belief and not knowing of the Holy Spirit until receiving the truth of what God had Peter to share with them. It was a full course meal of God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Cornelius had knowledge of God and was devout believer, but he knew not about the Son or the Holy Spirit. That why Peter was sent and why Peter taught people different then himself.
Where is spiritual food coming from online, where is your faith stretched too, and are you going to the place God has sent you to, to be feed from his creation, like a raven, a dirty bird, or to Cornelius house to testify. Whatever the case do not be afraid or ashamed of the direction he sends you just but obedient to the Lord and you will find yourselve with manna from heaven, having a full course meal of quail and manna.
Dear Heavenly Father, feed us your manna, and quail, knowing your food is rich and worthy to eat no matter the source out there it comes from, for you impower your people to dine before their enemies and drink by brooks of still water. In Jesus precious precious name, Amen.
