A Woman Resurrected

Daily Devotions:
by Christina Farris

Acts 9:36-42 KJV
36 Now there was at Joppa a certain disciple named Tabitha, which by interpretation is called Dorcas: this woman was full of good works and almsdeeds which she did.
37 And it came to pass in those days, that she was sick, and died: whom when they had washed, they laid her in an upper chamber.
38 And forasmuch as Lydda was nigh to Joppa, and the disciples had heard that Peter was there, they sent unto him two men, desiring him that he would not delay to come to them.
39 Then Peter arose and went with them. When he was come, they brought him into the upper chamber: and all the widows stood by him weeping, and shewing the coats and garments which Dorcas made, while she was with them.
40 But Peter put them all forth, and kneeled down, and prayed; and turning him to the body said, Tabitha, arise. And she opened her eyes: and when she saw Peter, she sat up.
41 And he gave her his hand, and lifted her up, and when he had called the saints and widows, presented her alive.
42 And it was known throughout all Joppa; and many believed in the Lord.

When resurrection of the death were both in Old And New Testament. There was a son of the Shunammite woman at the time of Elisha who son was raised back to life though he was dead. Resurrection of the dead seem like only a story of the New Testament in the Gospels but there were other events of raising of the dead. The daughter of Roman Centurion, Lazarus, a boy on a funeral stretcher and Jesus himself is mentioned to be risen from the dead in the Gospels. Yet not in every case of death was there a resurrection. In fact resurrections were usually to help in unbelief of the reality of God. In Dorcas case I wonder what initiated the men to go get Peter. What was going through the mind of Peter as he enter the house of Dorcas. Yet he did not hesitate to shut the people out of the room where Dorcas laid and then began to pray. Peter was one of the chief Apostles. He was consider a leader among the Christians because he had walked with Christ.

What can we learn about this story, that God moves among his people in ways that might seem to be extreme to win others to faith. In this century you hear of stories of this type event happening of resurrection through prayer, but it not a normal story heard beyond the hospital stretchers when a person is brought back to life by CPR. Yet Dorcas had been dead probably a little while for they had washed her body and prepared her for burial.

There are times of miracles and times of mocking. Jesus was will aware of both as he walked the earth. He did not always heal or deliver people because they were mocking to see if God would heal or not. In this case no one seemed to ask Peter to raise her from the dead, it something that happened. People were concern to have lost a lovely seamstress who did beautiful work for their community. Yet Peter began to pray and Dorcas sat up alive. Peter then took her by the hand and called to the widows and saints and presented her alive. And it went through village and many believed in the Lord.

God is gracious to build his church on faith in him, through miracles and wonders through the Apostles after Christ death and resurrection, yet God was glorified. We must be careful to give credit not the Apostle or the saints of God that pray but to God alone for his miracles he performs among his people. The reality of God is still here today. What we need to do is learn to pray and remember God does not always say yes to our request, but God does use miracles for his glory. Miracles are for that purpose to glorify God.

Dear Heavenly Father thank you for the smallest miracles of faith including those big faith altering miracles of faith, in Jesus precious name, Amen.

Continual Scripture Study: Acts 2:16-21 KJV
16 But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;
17 And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:
18 And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:
19 And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke:
20 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come:
21 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.
