Daily Devotions: by Christina FarrisMark 15:1-22 KJV
1 And straightway in the morning the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council, and bound Jesus, and carried him away, and delivered him to Pilate.
2 And Pilate asked him, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answering said unto him, Thou sayest it.
3 And the chief priests accused him of many things: but he answered nothing.
4 And Pilate asked him again, saying, Answerest thou nothing? behold how many things they witness against thee.
5 But Jesus yet answered nothing; so that Pilate marvelled.
6 Now at that feast he released unto them one prisoner, whomsoever they desired.
7 And there was one named Barabbas, which lay bound with them that had made insurrection with him, who had committed murder in the insurrection.
8 And the multitude crying aloud began to desire him to do as he had ever done unto them.
9 But Pilate answered them, saying, Will ye that I release unto you the King of the Jews?
10 For he knew that the chief priests had delivered him for envy.
11 But the chief priests moved the people, that he should rather release Barabbas unto them.
12 And Pilate answered and said again unto them, What will ye then that I shall do unto him whom ye call the King of the Jews?
13 And they cried out again, Crucify him.
14 Then Pilate said unto them, Why, what evil hath he done? And they cried out the more exceedingly, Crucify him.
15 And so Pilate, willing to content the people, released Barabbas unto them, and delivered Jesus, when he had scourged him, to be crucified.
16 And the soldiers led him away into the hall, called Praetorium; and they call together the whole band.
17 And they clothed him with purple, and platted a crown of thorns, and put it about his head,
18 And began to salute him, Hail, King of the Jews!
19 And they smote him on the head with a reed, and did spit upon him, and bowing their knees worshipped him.
20 And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple from him, and put his own clothes on him, and led him out to crucify him.
21 And they compel one Simon a Cyrenian, who passed by, coming out of the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to bear his cross.
22 And they bring him unto the place Golgotha, which is, being interpreted, The place of a skull.
I decided to repost this passage used around Easter time this year but not the same devotion. I am talking about the insurrection maybe causing questions that might seem like why is this publicly being used for the story of the trial and not Luke, Matthew or John. Prehaps to show we seldom examine the whole story of events. One can see a good man dying on a cross, because of his healing power, because of his super natural ability to calm the storms, and third we see a man that can raise also the dead. Then we get to the trial and we learn that he is part of insurrection in Mark. Though he did not kill, he would pay the price for the one that killed. The only reason he was crucified is his claim to be the King of Jews. Now where did the story of his claim to be king, when he road the ass/donkey into Jerusalem the celebration of the Triumphal Entry. Who began the entry but Christ himself. Disciples only did as instructed by Jesus by bring the colt to him to ride into Jerusalem. Yet the people that knew him took branches and exalted him as king as he rode in, and even praised him and rejoiced, shouting Hosanna to the King. The insurrection had to do with the turning over of the money changers.
We must remember God said he would blind the eyes of his people to who Jesus was and is. They would forsake him when he went to the cross. Yet he had to be accused of something that the government at that time would of been willing to allow Jesus to be crucified. The thing was a king in the land that was not Caesar. Competition for the Roman rule. It sounds all simple, tell you get to the last two verses I posted today there are more verses to this passage of scripture, a total of 47 to be exact. The soldiers had to compel someone to help carry the cross of Jesus. This was not a voluntary service, this was a request like an officer commandeering a vehicle. Yet could he refused, no I think this was the call of God on Simon Cyrene life, this man would get saved and his children and him would be ministers to the greek people according to Christian history.
Yesterday we talked about Jesus talking about loving him back and those who loved him not. I wrote on the fact that people did not always like Jesus, but Jesus said those who loved him would keep and follow his commandments and the love the Father. To love God and to love his Son. The point is maybe simplier then we think, if God allowed Roman soldiers to compel Simon Cyrene to carry his Son's Jesus cross, he also compelled the man's heart to salvation during the event, though scripture itself tells it not, beyond the remention of the name Rufus(Romans 16:13), who is probably the same person as one Simon Cyrene's son in Luke, Christian history recorded that he got saved and preached to the greeks. Those involved in the cross forgiven, not forsaken, why because their hearts were harden by God to be part of the crucifixion and for the very act of the crucifixion to be carried out. God had ordain the crucifixion of His Son, so he could be the sacrificial lamb for you and I. The one offering for sin. There would be no more sacrifice for sin. Did Cain die for killing Abel. Cain heart had a chose to kill or not to kill. Cain sinned, but God did not destroy him, only abandon him.
God only left Christ on the cross when Christ's body was ready to finish dying. One must remember Christ is the Son of God the Word of God and fully and completely part of Godhead bodily(Colossians 2:9). Jesus cries out on the cross forgive them for they know not what they do(recorded in John). All because of God's grace, he forgives man and he forgives man daily when they fail to obey his word. His greatest commandment is to love him and to love others. The bases to following Jesus. Yet the man Simon of Cyrene was first compeled by the soldiers, force to carry the cross, and then learned who the man was and carried the word about the cross so others might be saved.
Our call to carry the cross of Jesus knowing everything about it or as much as we can understand. We are called to tell how Christ died for our sins. How God's word we break when we disobey him. Love of God is greater then our sin. He paid the price for our sin through the cross of Jesus. He loved us that much and all he wants us to believe and receive his gift of salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. His love taken from us only to resurrect Jesus once more.
Dear Heavenly Father, help us to receive your salvation, your great plan for us and to love others as we share with them Jesus. In Jesus precious name, Amen.
Continual Scripture Study: Colossians 2:6-15 KJV
6 As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him:
7 Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.
8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.
9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.
10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:
11 In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:
12 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.
13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;
14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;
15 And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.
