The Call Of Repentance 06/13/2021
Daily Devotions: by Christina FarrisJonah 3:1-10 KJV
1 And the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the second time, saying,
2 Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and preach unto it the preaching that I bid thee.
3 So Jonah arose, and went unto Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceeding great city of three days' journey.
4 And Jonah began to enter into the city a day's journey, and he cried, and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.
5 So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them.
6 For word came unto the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he laid his robe from him, and covered him with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.
7 And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste any thing: let them not feed, nor drink water:
8 But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily unto God: yea, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands.
9 Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not?
10 And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not.
I was listening to a minister this AM and he claimed he did nothing wrong when he and his wife lost a baby. I wanted to honestly sympathize with the man, but the thoughts are you sound like a little like Job. The truth is his sermon was to bring about a point that I soon lost with my own mind weaving through scripture what I was fixing to write. See we need to be careful about looking at others it be better if we had vail over us and could not see what others do or say, because in truth that vail is protection of what we know might be on the other side that is not of God. Moses wore a vail before the people because of his contact with God and to shield the glorious appearance he had from the people because he had been with God. Until we want to see and hear the word of God it is behind a veil. The more it sits behind an invisible vail the more evil that runs through the world, in which we live.
Now there was also a vail to the holies of holies the place of God's dwelling in the Tabernacle and Temple. This vail was ripped when Christ died. There was no more a separation between God and man. Yet the blood Christ covers our sin, and God sees only the blood that protects us from his wrath upon receiving Christ as Lord and Savior. What does all this have to do with Jonah. I thought you probably be wondering about it by now.
Truth this has alot to do with Jonah, though Old Testament the word of God was the one thing that removed the vail from off the people, the vail that separated God from man. Man had to recourses, either repent or not to repent and face judgment for sin. If God calling one to repent the correct recourse is to turn from sin and to believe in Christ Jesus. Nineveh was called to repentance. It took Jonah three days from where God called him a second time to preach to Nineveh. He gets there and begins to warn the people about the wrath of God coming and the whole city repents including their King, for he sent cries into the street to help spread the word of a fast for repentance in the land.
It was enough the king believed the call to repentance, and no one knows how sinful this city was, but he knew to reach God he needed to fast, repent and pray. The vail that had covered the eyes of the king of the evil in the land and in his life was brought to the king's attention. When anyone is called to repentance the vail is removed when the understanding comes of knowledge they are sinners.
Is this love that God remove the vail long enough so one can see sin. A cat playing in cooler box has no clue that he is any danger as he shuts the door, but once the door is open the cat runs across the room. Why because this is one time the cat perfers the light over the darkness in the cooler. The vail that caused our separation from God was removed with the cross. The vail/door taken away that caused our in ability to come to God. The law would do the same as Christ would do, remove the separation from God. The word being Christ, and Christ being the word never change just the imaginery of how it is applied. Christ being the word removed the vail off of Nineveh and Christ Jesus on the cross removed the vail as it was ripped in the temple for you and I. Making it simple we all sin and all fall short of the glory of God, but you have to receive the truth and not just say those words. Where are you this morning, receiving all are need of repentance, Jonah was yet to fully grasp God's grace in his life, tomorrow you will see exactly what I mean. Nineveh fully understood and wanted the whole city to repent and the people obeyed the king. God had more then one preacher in the town of Nineveh, Jonah just had to sound the warning cry of the need for repentance.
Dear Heavenly Father thank you giving us your Son and having him remove the vail that separted us from you so we can see our sin and our transgression as they are, in Jesus precious name, Amen.
Continual Scripture Study: 2 Corinthians 3:13-18 KJV
13 And not as Moses, which put a vail over his face, that the children of Israel could not stedfastly look to the end of that which is abolished:
14 But their minds were blinded: for until this day remaineth the same vail untaken away in the reading of the old testament; which vail is done away in Christ.
15 But even unto this day, when Moses is read, the vail is upon their heart.
16 Nevertheless when it shall turn to the Lord, the vail shall be taken away.
17 Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.
18 But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.
