Daily Devotions:
by Christina Farris

Psalm 23:1-6 KJV
1 A Psalm of David. The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

The Lord is my shepherd, many westerns, and dramas have used this Psalms at funerals on the big screen, with no regards to the true meaning of this Psalms, only to point out that someone died, so when hearing it. It is used to bring comfort at funeral because of the believers life journey. For the believer this Psalms is a representive of the loving Shepherd(the Lord). The fact God provides for our needs through out their days on earth, that we won't be in want.

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures, Meaning God instructs us and forces to come to a time of rest. Now one might ask why is rest so important, with out being recharged daily from rest we would not function will. That rest charges our low batteries of our physical body. Individually our bodies will be at times over come by the need of sleep for even a short rest period. David knew when his eyes closed to rest, sleep did not always come easy, but God enabled him to rest. Prayer in the middle of a long night often helps a person to sleep. Yet is also a natural part of our humanity to need that rest, but our stress and worries, plus daily living sometimes prevent our rest. How many young people use caffenine before an exam to study all night. Prayer in night and unloading the burdens of life on our heavenly Father, allows him to help carry our load.

David knew what it was to be in the woods or road side walking beside still waters trusting in God. Sometimes the water was rough and sometimes slow, but God was with him through out the journey of his life and the waters were still, meant David was following in the ways of God, because only God way only represent the stillness of or steady flow of faith. When David himself with a broken heart and soul that needed repairing God did the mending of his soul and God would lead him in the path of righteousness.

God lead David even when he felt death was near, and it seem to over shadow him, God rod and staff comforted him. The staff of a shepherd does to things brings correction, by taking the hook and putting it around the sheep and pulling him away to safety and correction and/protection. God correction is comfort if understood for what purpose we are being corrected. And protection of God is enough to know his love and his comfort in times of difficulty.

David knew what was to have Samuel anoint him to be king and at the same time sit at the table of King Saul in fear of his life as he threw a spear at him. To know he was chosen was enough to keep him not just in fear of his life, but knowledge of God's protection because he was chosen to rule.

The last verse talks about after all the storms in life, and following in faith, that David would dwell in the house of the Lord for ever, where Psalms only implies eternity meaning in heaven.

David knew God was not letting go, but he was there to comfort, to guide to direct him in his life and to still the storms in life. The Lord seen has a loving shepherd. Love that is not understood by some that only see God wrath and correction without understanding. Yet God's way is best, we just have to trust in him in His way of doing things.

Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for being a loving Shepherd to your people. Help us to know you comfort in the storms. In Jesus precious name, Amen.

Continual Scripture Study: Isaiah 40:10-11 KJV
10 Behold, the Lord GOD will come with strong hand, and his arm shall rule for him: behold, his reward is with him, and his work before him.
11 He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young.
