My Rock And Fortress

Daily Devotions:
by Christina Farris

2 Samuel 22:1-28 KJV
1 And David spake unto the LORD the words of this song in the day that the LORD had delivered him out of the hand of all his enemies, and out of the hand of Saul:
2 And he said, The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer;
3 The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour; thou savest me from violence.
4 I will call on the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies.
5 When the waves of death compassed me, the floods of ungodly men made me afraid;
6 The sorrows of hell compassed me about; the snares of death prevented me;
7 In my distress I called upon the LORD, and cried to my God: and he did hear my voice out of his temple, and my cry did enter into his ears.
8 Then the earth shook and trembled; the foundations of heaven moved and shook, because he was wroth.
9 There went up a smoke out of his nostrils, and fire out of his mouth devoured: coals were kindled by it.
10 He bowed the heavens also, and came down; and darkness was under his feet.
11 And he rode upon a cherub, and did fly: and he was seen upon the wings of the wind.
12 And he made darkness pavilions round about him, dark waters, and thick clouds of the skies.
13 Through the brightness before him were coals of fire kindled.
14 The LORD thundered from heaven, and the most High uttered his voice.
15 And he sent out arrows, and scattered them; lightning, and discomfited them.
16 And the channels of the sea appeared, the foundations of the world were discovered, at the rebuking of the LORD, at the blast of the breath of his nostrils.
17 He sent from above, he took me; he drew me out of many waters;
18 He delivered me from my strong enemy, and from them that hated me: for they were too strong for me.
19 They prevented me in the day of my calamity: but the LORD was my stay.
20 He brought me forth also into a large place: he delivered me, because he delighted in me.
21 The LORD rewarded me according to my righteousness: according to the cleanness of my hands hath he recompensed me.
22 For I have kept the ways of the LORD, and have not wickedly departed from my God.
23 For all his judgments were before me: and as for his statutes, I did not depart from them.
24 I was also upright before him, and have kept myself from mine iniquity.
25 Therefore the LORD hath recompensed me according to my righteousness; according to my cleanness in his eye sight.
26 With the merciful thou wilt shew thyself merciful, and with the upright man thou wilt shew thyself upright.
27 With the pure thou wilt shew thyself pure; and with the froward thou wilt shew thyself unsavoury.
28 And the afflicted people thou wilt save: but thine eyes are upon the haughty, that thou mayest bring them down.

David early career of being a war hero there were times that David true weakness showed and God's strength in his life prevailed. It is normal to have fear in your heart at times when the enemy seems like he might prevail. There is time in one life that the enemy seems larger then life. The enemy surrounds and the enemy is strong like a flood of people all around. Yet God prevails as he swoops down to deliver his people. It speaks here of God being like almost a mystical creature out of fairy story, and it for David it is a reality as a major storm came and drove everyone into the cave and David was surrounded by his enemy. The water flowed outside the cave but David hid deep enough within out of reach of King Saul's soldiers sight. This particular passage in scripture is probably the reflection and rejoicing after the final attack of King Saul on his life and a truth is established between Saul and David.

David rejoice in the Lord his shied, rock and fortress of God almight in his life because he was willing to obey the Lord in all his ways of his life. David was still quite a young man, and still learning and was not king. The fear he felt was a normal fear but the battle ended quietly when Saul discovered David could of killed him in the cave. God delivered with out conflict from a great king. God used a storm to send all into the cave of refuge from the storm, only to find the enemy was deep within, and Saul knew then David was not trying to take his authority from him. David was obeying the Lord concerning the anointed king of Israel. He was obedient to the ways of God in his life and he contributed his victories to the Lord because he did that which was right in the sight of God.

To think most of us could we contribute our success to God because of our obedience to him? Would our fear of the enemies in our life know the hand of God was on our life and move out of the way of our victory. If our victory came from God we had to obey God and his Spirit in our life, by following his word of the things that we ought to do and not do the things we should not do. What then should we say God is on our side because we obeyed the law or because we lead in truth of His Spirit or by His Word. Perhaps you can see how recognizing God, obeying God's laws and following his Spirit for direction can be your protector. When you do not know far to press back into the cave and hide in the shadow of God almighty as His anointed sleeps, will you rise in the morning to know you have won the victory. To know the victory of God chosen has power but not the victory as you claim the prize.

May God be your rock and fortress in your life today, as you go about whatever may lay ahead in your life. May you know the power of obedience to His word and his Spirit moving in your life. May you be rich with fullness of truth and not the richness of the lies of the devil.

Dear Heavenly Father be our rock and our fortress in you who we hide during the storm in order to come out victorious under the shadow of your wings. In Jesus precious name, Amen.
