| Matthew 3:7-17 KJV
7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
8 Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:
9 And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.
10 And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:
12 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.
13 Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him.
14 But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?
15 And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him.
16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:
17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
|John Baptist is speaking to the crowd in this chapter of Matthew. He is perhaps heart broken over the Pharisees and Sadduces of his day, but he calls them vipers. They were his brethren for his father had been a priest. He was preaching to his brethren. Not only brethren but to a people that were bitten by the leaders by their false doctrines. God wants to do something to expel the falsehood out of the church world of today as well as God was doing something with the false doctrines of the leaders of Christ day. God desires to purge us individually and corporately to get rid of the falsehood. To purify the leaders of our churches. One thing God is not pleased about the church world is false doctrines that belong not in the church. The way God purges the church is through the Holy Spirit. Without the coming of the Holy Spirit the word of God sits dormant. Might say God's word is put on a shelf never moving off of it beyond the repetition of the lessons taught. God wants to purge his people and clear their hearts and mind and the only thing remaining is the wheat or seed of faith, that produces if planted in rich soil of faith.
The Pharisees and Sadducees would witness Jesus baptism. They would be witness of the testimony of God as well as the crowd. It only spurred them on to ask more questions as time went on in Jesus ministry. Ever seeing and hearing but not fully grasping what was happening. God the Father by His Spirit anointed Jesus just as the disciples would one day be anointed for ministry on the day of pentecost. Baptism of the Spirit needs no water or oil. It is the power of God coming down on a person for service. God declaring this person has someone chosen by him. I do not doubt Peter who we learned about his experience yesterday finally understood on the day of pentecost about what he seen happen to Jesus. Cornelius household in Acts 10 was baptized and were the first gentiles known to have received the Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit comes and gives a person the ability to testify once being saved. The anointing of the Holy Spirit is to bring the word to others so they to might believe.
It is interesting to speak to people that can quote many of the christians authors of today, but what will remain is not the authors or even some of their words but what God's word truly says. The latest writers will not always write, but the things that will be etched in the believers heart are those things writen by the Spirit on the hearts of the believer. Those things of God that are speaking and writing the laws of God on our hearts by his Spirit. Our correction comes by the Holy Spirit. Our purging comes by the Holy Spirit who teaches us about who God is and His Son. The anointing is so God can speak through us with His love and compassion, for He knows it takes God to love and forgive unconditionally the things done by others. One of the gifts of the Spirit is love and He teaches us to love like Him. The Holy Spirit does not just anoint without giving ability to do His work. Jesus had to go through both water and the Holy Spirit baptism. Did Jesus need himself proof of His anointing the answer is no because of who He is. Yet the crowd of witnesses needed it to testify of who Jesus was. The crowd needed evidence and it was enough for Peter. Is it enough to know our Lord demonstrated to the believer the things he must go through as a follower in faith. We to need to be baptized both waster for evidences to others we following in Christ footsteps though it not necessary for salvation. We need Biblical baptism, an immersion into God's word. To grow in knowledge of who God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit is. With growing the Holy Spirit purges us so that we are purified by the removal of the dead material called sin out of our lives. It material that has no value.John Baptist sermon on purging of wheat, is helpful in understanding how God wants to destroy the sin from us and not allow it to remain.
Dear Heavenly Father, purge our hearts by your Spirit allow no sin to remain in our life, so that we are purified for your use to spread the truth of your love. In Jesus precious name, Amen.

15 Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before,
16 This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them;
17 And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.
