Daily Devotions:
by Christina Farris

2 Kings 2:1-25 KJV
1 And it came to pass, when the LORD would take up Elijah into heaven by a whirlwind, that Elijah went with Elisha from Gilgal.
2 And Elijah said unto Elisha, Tarry here, I pray thee; for the LORD hath sent me to Bethel. And Elisha said unto him, As the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. So they went down to Bethel.
3 And the sons of the prophets that were at Bethel came forth to Elisha, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the LORD will take away thy master from thy head to day? And he said, Yea, I know it; hold ye your peace.
4 And Elijah said unto him, Elisha, tarry here, I pray thee; for the LORD hath sent me to Jericho. And he said, As the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. So they came to Jericho.
5 And the sons of the prophets that were at Jericho came to Elisha, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the LORD will take away thy master from thy head to day? And he answered, Yea, I know it; hold ye your peace.
6 And Elijah said unto him, Tarry, I pray thee, here; for the LORD hath sent me to Jordan. And he said, As the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. And they two went on.
7 And fifty men of the sons of the prophets went, and stood to view afar off: and they two stood by Jordan.
8 And Elijah took his mantle, and wrapped it together, and smote the waters, and they were divided hither and thither, so that they two went over on dry ground.
9 And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that Elijah said unto Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me.
10 And he said, Thou hast asked a hard thing: nevertheless, if thou see me when I am taken from thee, it shall be so unto thee; but if not, it shall not be so.
11 And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.
12 And Elisha saw it, and he cried, My father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof. And he saw him no more: and he took hold of his own clothes, and rent them in two pieces.
13 He took up also the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and went back, and stood by the bank of Jordan;
14 And he took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and smote the waters, and said, Where is the LORD God of Elijah? and when he also had smitten the waters, they parted hither and thither: and Elisha went over.
15 And when the sons of the prophets which were to view at Jericho saw him, they said, The spirit of Elijah doth rest on Elisha. And they came to meet him, and bowed themselves to the ground before him.
16 And they said unto him, Behold now, there be with thy servants fifty strong men; let them go, we pray thee, and seek thy master: lest peradventure the Spirit of the LORD hath taken him up, and cast him upon some mountain, or into some valley. And he said, Ye shall not send.
17 And when they urged him till he was ashamed, he said, Send. They sent therefore fifty men; and they sought three days, but found him not.
18 And when they came again to him, (for he tarried at Jericho,) he said unto them, Did I not say unto you, Go not?
19 And the men of the city said unto Elisha, Behold, I pray thee, the situation of this city is pleasant, as my lord seeth: but the water is naught, and the ground barren.
20 And he said, Bring me a new cruse, and put salt therein. And they brought it to him.
21 And he went forth unto the spring of the waters, and cast the salt in there, and said, Thus saith the LORD, I have healed these waters; there shall not be from thence any more death or barren land.
22 So the waters were healed unto this day, according to the saying of Elisha which he spake.
23 And he went up from thence unto Bethel: and as he was going up by the way, there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head.
24 And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the LORD. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them.
25 And he went from thence to mount Carmel, and from thence he returned to Samaria.

Elisha a prophet, friend and student of the Prophet Elijah. Elijah knew today was the day he would go to heaven. Elisha even knew today was the day Elijah would be taken away from him. Now if you understand there is no knowledge of a chariot of fire, no airplanes, and no rocket ships, then how would God take him. Now Elijah had Elisha cross over the jordan river with him on dry land after hitting the water with his rod, similiar to Moses crossing with all the people across the red sea. Elijah had no doubt showed Elisha many things as a master of faith. Yet had he shown Elisha not to allow the prophets to control him. He need to learn to be his own master and allow God to be the master, but he gave in when the prophets wanted to search for Elijah after Elisha watch Elijah go up in a whirl wind riding on a chariot of fire drawn by a horse of fire. Now Elisha asked Elijah for one thing before he went to be with God, and that was if he seen him depart if he could have double portion of the Spirit of God. And Elijah said if you see me depart, then the Lord will grant your request. With that said, Elijah depart with Elisha seeing God taking Elijah up to heaven.

Elisha then began his journey as he cross the jordan river the same way Elijah and him had crossed with Elisha striking the river himself. Elisha went on after seen the prophets to a place where the land was barren and toss salt in the place of the river and commanded it to be healed and water return to the river. Then Elisha had some children that were following him and mocking him and he turns backs and curses them. And a mother bear kills 42 children.

What is the point of the point of the story. Don't stand in the way of someone just filled and anointed by God with a double portion. That be simple enough to grasp. However my title says can not change a thing. There is something we can control, Elisha could not controll the prophets desire to go and search for the remains of Elijah despite he told them he was taken up to heaven. The prophecy of Elijah departure could not be changed, it was appoint to be removed from the earth and taken to heaven. Our time of death or removal from planet earth is only known by God the Father. When it time, it matters not where we are, we will be taken to heaven, before the judgment seat of God. Most will never see a flaming chariot or a flaming horse that draws the chariot. Yet it makes no difference on our day of departure we may not even know the time or day. Elijah knew and so did the prophets, including his student Elisha.

Can not change a bear killing forty-two children, after he curse them with a curse them in the name of the Lord. Had Elisha fully understood the power God had given him. Had he understand that whatever he asked in the Lord's name it would be done. Jesus teaching that anything down in his name it will be given. Are we careful what we ask for, are we praying by the Holy Spirit in all things. Elisha was still learning, but would be a Prophet to the wicked King Ahab and Jezebel in the land of Samaria. Remember what might seem cruel and unjust maybe preparation for a prophet, to allow God to revenge the King and Queen, instead of requesting revenge.

Not everything a person does is good in the name of Lord. Many people of done many things evil in the name of Lord. For some reason God honor it. Yet when God does not honor evil then that is a blessing from God, because he is allowing the person time to repent, time to gain understanding what they ask of God. We might not be able to change what we ask of God or what mercy we ask God not to show, but we can learn from it. Elisha never curse the king or queen he served but he did speak the words of God that God spoke to him to the queen and king of Israel in Samaria. Let us understand we can not change the will of God or change our petition sometimes. I do not doubt Elisha had some guilt over the cursing the children over being called bald headed man and being mocked in such a fashion. Point being don't use prayer to bring judgment even yourself might deserve, use prayer to heal, deliver, and bring hope to others. Use the communication with God for his glory and honor.

Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for today for the things we can not change, but things that will be done according to will and purpose in our life. Even those things we do by mistake. In Jesus precious name, Amen.

Continual Scripture Study: Romans 8:27-28 KJV
27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
