Daily Devotions:
by Christina Farris

Luke 8:19-21 KJV
19 Then came to him his mother and his brethren, and could not come at him for the press.
20 And it was told him by certain which said, Thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to see thee.
21 And he answered and said unto them, My mother and my brethren are these which hear the word of God, and do it.

Every now and then you hear of a manaic killing someone in the name of God. No one in their right mind believes it is an act of God. I want to address being a hearer of the word and a doer. God is speaking to his people in a church or even outside of a church in a study, no where is God going to tell you to kill. God is able to judge a person on his own. Second God commands us not to kill. I am not talking about war with another country, I am talking about using amunition to kill someone that is causing you a headache. The first thing we need to know is Christ calls us his family that does his will and listens to his word. If in 20 commandments God is faithful to say do not kill in only one commandment. It is evident that God will not change his mind two thousand years later at the time of Christ or even today. I am talking protective forces, I talking about the lone assassin or the serial killer. The person that thinks it time to take the law in his own hands because they claim God said so. God is clear do not kill.

Now with that said lets get on with todays lesson about being hearers of the word. To hear the word of God we need to compare it to scripture we already understand is from God. Now take what we know and apply it to our life to live it. Live in liberty is a doer of the word and hearer of the word. The Holy Spirit may prophesy in church through a speaker, or person in the congregation. What did the Holy Spirit say? Is what the Holy Spirit said in contradiction to the word, then it is not of God. But if the word comes and it lines up with scripture or at least not in opposition of scripture, we might ask is it something the church needs to be doing when the message came.

Ministers and teachers proclaim the word of God, to educate those in attendance of the things of God. Those things in contradiction to the word is not what we should be hearing as being Gospel. It is the love, joy, peace, long suffering, gentleness, kindness, and meekness should be part of the action of the believer, because it is a fruit of the Holy Spirit. Compassion is a gift. Love shown to others as well hope is given to encourage others. Is those things that are being taught capable of being carried out by the believer with the help of the Holy Spirit. Can what God is calling each of us to do spreadable to others so they to might know Christ and be part of the family of God.

Jesus is clear his family is those that hear and do the work of the Spirit. Many people hear the words of God but do not do them. I learned over the years my husband might hear me talk only to do the opposite of what I ask. He is still my husband, why because maybe it something I can do myself. Jesus needs not us to do his will, but he does teach us to carry out his will. He places the seed/word of God in our hearts so that we can have understanding to be able to do the word. To be longsuffering beyond maybe human capabilities. Jesus had taught his disciples to teach all nations about what He had taught them and shown them. We can not ignore the word of God from beginning to end. For God is consistent God. Jesus, did not tell his disciples his family was right there to cause his mother and siblings heartbreak, but to explain that these people that he was teaching were important too. They were his family and people that desired to do the will of God as well as hear the word of God.

Dear Heavenly Father, help us to be hearers of the word and to be doers of the word. Not to allow the word to go in one ear and out the other, but to have action in our life of your word moving in our life to action. In Jesus precious name, Amen.

Continual Scripture Study for Devotion:James 1:22-25 KJV
22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:
24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.
25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.
